To the Boy in the Back
I get excited to come to work just so that I can make you smile.Â
Do you find me coming to your desk to make you laugh cute?Â
Or am I a nuisance you would rather not have?Â
Have you told her about me? That girl you go home to every night.Â
Because I think about her a lot. Even though you never mention her to me.Â
Everyone else asks how she is, but I am too scared to.Â
Because I still find your theatrics funny,Â
And I am pretty sure you are doing them for me.Â
And I am pretty sure you didnât laugh this much before I got here.Â
I ask like it even matters anyway.Â
You are going to leave soon. Who is going to play with me then?Â
The office wonât have as much laughter, and I might not enjoy coming anymore.Â
I want you to be one of those guys, the ones who let me eat their fries.Â
I have a ton of friends like that, and I would settle for you just being one of them.Â
But I donât dare ask if you want that too.
Do you think you will come back? I am pretty sure we would still have a place for you.Â
By then I should be better than I am now. I could have accomplished something.Â
Grown into someone that you could love.Â
Or you could move on and become someone amazing.
And the memory of you will forever sit in the back of my mind
Appearing as a faint smile on my faceÂ
Whenever I open that tricky drawer like how you taught me to.Â
So for now I will just go to the back room
To call out your name, maybe tell you a joke
And laugh when you complain about how the world hates you.
Because you don't have to put in as much effort in making me smile as you do,Â
I will collect those moments up, as memories to cherish after you're gone.Â
