You know how when you're really thirsty you drink some water and then you're like ahhhhhhhh, yeah, that was just what I needed. That sounds vacuous but I mean about how in that moment you're suddenly very aware that all drinks apart from straight-up normal water are mere toys, and water is all you really need to drink, water is the one true object of all the thirsts you've ever thirsted and ever shall thirst. It's just what you need. Well basically I really wish that same thing existed for food, I guess I'm fine with the endless variety of food that exists, it's allowed to exist, but there should be one perfectly basic food substance underlying them all that always feels right to eat when you're hungry, that just gives uncomplicated reliable hunger-satisfaction and is actually the correct answer to "what should I eat". I'm pretty sick of the fact that you have to actively vary the food you eat and try to have a healthy balanced diet, I'm even sick of having to figure out what foods I like and preferences and cravings change randomly and stuff like that. I want one food. Water is so good.

We calculated the cylinder's mass by measuring its volume and using the known density of copper, then we weighed it and all got very excited when the two numbers were the same

At the time of posting (06/08/26 05:17 UTC), the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover has been on Mars for fourteen (Earth) years!

In Gale Crater, just south of Mars' equator, we're drawing towards the end of summer and the end of Mars Year 38. But Curiosity is climbing on, heading higher and higher up Mt. Sharp. As always, you can catch up on our goings-on at the mission blog or check out the latest images fresh from Mars.

Last year, we left our long-time travel companion Gediz Vallis behind and rolled into a new valley, which we're now calling Valle Grande. I think when I posted last landiversary we'd just made it to the boxwork area with its Curiosity-sized wide ridges surrounding sandy hollows that you can see below (or full size here).

We stuck around the boxwork for a while, while the geologists did plenty of imaging and sampling. In April, we got back on the road and have been driving through different bands of material, lots of tiny polygons, and heading, ultimately, for the yardangs at the top of the valley.

The coming year is a big one for Curiosity. We're rapidly approaching 5000 sols (martian days) of the mission, and November marks 15 years since launch. Also exciting for me personally, we're heading into a new Mars year, which means, among other things, a new cloudy season!
