GREY GHOST Well. It's that time of year. The time of year that foodies such as myself come to look forward to as if it was a national holiday. And that my friends, is restaurant week! Detroit Restaurant Week to be exact. Those who know me personally know that I had a terrible experience last year due to false advertising. Basically, some websites were promoting a 2016 Detroit Restaurant Week. But alas, upon arriving at the restaurant of choice, I learned that there was indeed no restaurant week that was happening and that the information on the websites was inaccurate. Imagine my dissapointment. -_- But 2017 is here, and with it, a new Detroit Restaurant Week. (For real this time) I unfortunately, am not able to visit all of the restaurants that are participating this year. But believe you me! I would if I could! This will be my second visit to Grey Ghost. I visited last year within their first couple weeks of opening and had a great time. Which is really saying something considering most new openings usually stumble and fall flat on their faces for the first month or so. Yet another addition to the ever expanding Midtown, Grey Ghost is tucked down a small side street off of John R. Parking is limited to street parking, so you may have to drive around a bit. We got lucky this particular visit. The first time we just walked after a Tigers game. (I would say it's about a 20 minute walk from Comerica Park) We had an early reservation. They open at 4pm most days. Except on weekends when they do brunch. I would love to check it out soon! Apparently they have a dynamite pastry chef in house that comes in every weekend. ^oo^ Ok. Now let me explain to you guys how restaurant week works. Participating restaurants come up with a specific restaurant week menu. Which you have to ask for upon arriving at your restaurant of choice. Most are three courses. Some are four. But you choose each of your courses from your choices for a set price. There are two price brackets. $39 and $29 for at least three courses. Drinks are not included. Grey Ghost is in the $39 price bracket. Now. Moving on to the good stuff. The food! The two first course choices are the gold yukon bisque and honey roasted carrots. I've got to be honest. My bisque was probably the best soup I've ever had. I loved the presentation despite the photo up top. First, they brought me a bowl with these little fried balls of deliciousness on the bottom that were smothered in cheese. But no soup! But then our server brought over a glass milk bottle that the bisque was actually in and poured it over top. I wish I would have known he was gonna do that so I could have gotten a better shot! But all is well. It went straight into my belly. It was so good that I didn't want to share! The honey roasted carrots were tasty but my bisque definitely won the first course round. I actually didn't try them because I was unsure if there was nuts on them, but it turned out to be granola. But Ryan did assure me they were good. He is my taste tester sometimes in instances where I can't haha. Next was the main course and I went with the rodeo burger. Excellent. Choice. I mean, sure, yeah, I was starving. But I ate my whole burger. Which is saying something. I loved the toasted bun and the barbecue sauce was great! I like my sauce sweet sweet sweeeeet, and this was just that. I actually liked that I wasn't distracted with a bunch of french fries because it gave me the opportunity to just focus on my burger. Ryan went with the ribs al pastor for his entree. I got to try some this time and just like everything else, they were great! The meat was literally falling off the bone, which is how they should be! They were spicy because of the kimchi, but I like a little bit of heat. But if you don't like spicy foods, then this dish isn't for you. Dessert was banana pudding. I love banana pudding! Not as much as my boyfriend does. He would probably bathe in banana pudding if he could. It's the only dessert that he gets excited about except ice cream. So I knew he would be happy about dessert for once. I'm a dessert girl. I always have room for something sweet. But what usually ends up happening is I order and then I eat it by myself lol. Which is fine, more for me I guess. Our banana pudding had its own twist with the vanilla wafers that actually came in the shape of croutons. By the end of dinner, I was stuffed. Some people complain about portion sizes during restaurant week, but I have no complaints about that here at all. I left stuffed. As did Ryan. We walked back to our car satisfied and looking forward to another restaurant week adventure this weekend..... stay tuned!! www.detroitrestaurantweek.com
BOBCAT BONNIEâS
Corktown has been an up and comer in the food scene for quite some time now. With restaurants like Gold Cash Gold and Katoi now open to the public among many others, there certainly is no shortage of good food. I have visited Bobcat Bonnieâs several times for their weekend brunch and have loved it every time. The 90âs kid in me rejoices every time when I walk in to discover the place is pushing out 90âs hit after hit from the speaker system to accompany their $3 mimosa and bloody mary bar. Thatâs right. $3. But today I didnât visit for brunch. I finally got the chance to try their dinner service and I was not disappointed.
I came during happy hour, which started at 4pm, which was the way to go. I felt like for the price and the amnount of food and drinks I ordered, it was a great deal! I started with the Buffalo Chicken Nachos which came out very promptly. The serving size was very large, definitely enough for multiple people to share. The only problem I run into with nachos is anything below the top layer is soggy. But they canât all be perfect like Soggy Bottomâs nachos! And we all know I will beat the drum of the Soggy Bottom nachos until the day I die.
Next was the Fried Goat Cheese, which is a best seller. If you are a goat cheese fan at all, even remotely, you owe it to yourself to order this. The little fried balls of goat cheese came drizzled with honey and pepper flakes. Oh em gee. Every bite was like a little bite of heaven. Every review I do has a favorite course, and I think the fried goat cheese takes the cake for me.
Since we started with nachos, I decided to keep with the Mexican theme and I went with the Tacos Platos. In a nutshell, they are basically fried fish tacos, but you can get the fish grilled if your heart desires. I loved that they were corn tortillas (because flour tortillas just⌠arenât that great. Letâs all just admit it) and they came double layered. Meaning two corn tortillas per taco. It really helps keep the taco constructed. Weâve all been there. You bite into a beautifully constructed taco, just to have it disinigrate all over the place. Not. Cool. But I didnât have that problem at all. The only other place I have been to that has perfected the double taco approach is Iron Horse in Royal Oak. And I also must comment on the jalapeno ranch because I want to put it on everything now.
Dessert was a Maple Bourbon Pie. It wasnât what I wanted. They were out of the Pineapple Upsidedown Cheesecake, which sounded amazing. So I ordered this instead. The pie tasted fine. It didnât blow me away or anything. To be honest, I didnât taste much maple or bourbon. But the problem I had was with the presentation. We eat with our eyes. Everyone knows that to be true. And our dessert came out looking like someone literally just threw our pie onto a plate and then put dollops of whipped cream on top of it. I am unsure if that was the intention. I mean, maybe it was supposed to be one of those deconstructed desserts? But I have eaten many deconstructed desserts that still looked a lot better.
All in all, my trip was a success. I enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. They had some arcade games in the back but only one was operational. I tried my hand at the Family Guy pinball machine only to find out that I suck at pinball. There was a shelf filled with board games in the back which was great. I am a sucker for board games. This would definitely be a lot of fun for a group of friends. I have played board games at bars before and itâs always been a blast.
Whether itâs for weekend brunch or dinner, stop into Bobcat Bonnieâs the next time youâre in Corktown. And get the fried goat cheese!
THE MORRIE
Royal Oak has a new kid on the block and it goes by The Morrie. Upon walking in you notice how big and spacious it is, and it really is a great place to watch sports. But it does so in a way where it avoids being categorized as a âsports bar.â Which is good because your friendly neighborhood Buffalo Wild Wings is literally right across the street. And does Buffalo Wild Wings have live music? I think not. I unfortunately didnât get to experience any live bands since I visited on a Sunday, but thatâs ok. Their stage is direcly in front of the large projection TV which is towards the back. Makes for a great date night option. And the decent array of TVâs make it very appropriate for gamedays too. If your team isnât playing on one TV, you can just choose another. There are plenty.
We sat at the bar per usual. I went in knowing they were new so I had patience from the get go. But honestly, my bartenders were very knowledgeable in the food and drink menus and they never really forgot about us. Which can be a huge frustration, I know. Everything we ordered was correct and came out in a timely fashion. They have a pretty diverse menu but their sandwiches are the stars of the show. Why? Because they have an in house pastry chef who came over from Bistro 82. So all of their breads and buns are made right there by hand, from scratch. Just something to keep in mind if you decide to peruse the menu for yourself one of these days. This is also something to keep in mind for desserts too!
My only complaint was with the Kung Pao Cauliflower. Itâs delicious. To me, it tasted just like orange chicken. Only, yanno⌠cauliflower instead of chicken. Duh. However, I noticed as we were munching away on our appetizers that my throat started to feel funny. Then I discovered nuts at the bottom of my dish. I politely got the bartenders attention and asked and he verified it was indeed nuts. I CANNOT stress this enough. You HAVE to put that on the menu. In the description it says nowhere that that particular item contains any nuts whatsoever. Thankfully my nut allergy isnât severe but if it would have been someone else who was deathly allergic⌠it could have become a bad situation really quickly. They asked me if I was going to be ok, and I said I was because I didnât actually ingest any of the nuts. But just the residue alone was enough for me to notice.
Next we tried the loaded waffle fries. Besides the chorizo being burnt I think they were my favorite of all the items we tried. I actually like some things burnt. I love burnt toast. Burnt cookies. I guess I get it from my grandma because she likes burnt things too. So again, it didnât really bother me. I probably could have eaten the whole plate by myself but I had to save room for the next course.
For my entree I went with the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich. Which is basically a spicy fried chicken sandwich. Unfortunately my chicken was a tad on the tough side. But I loved the crunch of the delicuously fried skin and the garlic aoili was fantastic. I would put that aoili on all my sandwiches if I could! No lie. I just wish the chicken would have been just a tad more tender than it was. And since I was on a mission to leave no carb behind, I ordered a side of mac and cheese. I donât know, but I am a mac and cheese pirate. If I see mac and cheese on ANY menu, I have to try it. And I am glad I did. If I wasnât so ridiculously full and feeling my buttons on my jeans at bursting point, I probably would have eaten all of it. Thatâs usually the point in the meal where I have to have everything boxed up because I will just continue eating if it sits in front of me.
Dessert was peach cobbler which was FANTASTIC. You know dessert is good when Ryan helps me eat it. Because I am usually a solo adventurer when the dessert menu comes. I love desserts that are both hot and cold. The warm streusel cobbler was filled with spiced peaches and then topped with a scoop of peach ice cream. Everything about it was perfect. I loved it. I would definitely order again.
The next time youâre in Royal Oak strolling down Main Street, I would say to give them a shot! Maybe even plan for a weekend date night and catch a live show. I am unsure on how often they have bands playing but I am sure you can check their Facebook page for more information. Or if you wanna be able to eat and watch a game, this is a good choice too.
Made some trail mix cookies to munch on while watching my Detroit Lions play some football! I filled them with raisins, M&M's and pretzels.

501 BAR AND GRILLE I have dined at 501 many many times before but this is the first time I have ever written an actual review. As a Flint native I have to say... there are an abundance of restaurants and bars right downtown that don't get enough love. Now don't get me wrong, The Torch is probably the most well known with their amazing burger. They recently won one of the best burgers in the NATION last year. (Yeah! Go Torch!) Buuuuut... what about their neighbors? Notice I said neighbors as in, plural. 501 defines itself as a tapas (or small plates) restaurant but they do have full size dinner options. So you can really go either way here. We usually order a couple appetizers before venturing to a main course. But to each their own. Recently, 501 updated their menu so there are a few new things that I have yet to try. Like the bone marrow? I've got my eye on you. I had a craving and I walked in with a mission. That mission? Chicken and waffles. 501 has some of the best chicken and waffles I have ever had. Seriously. Everything about them is awesome. The fried chicken is super crunchy yet super tender on the inside. And the vanilla syrup that they drizzle over top is perfection. It's probably my favorite appetizer on the menu for sure. They even have an entree version for an even bigger portion! We also ordered the newly added 501 Deviled Eggs which were superb! I keep seeing more and more places offering deviled eggs on the menu and I find myself ordering them almost every time. When it comes holiday time, my weakness is homemade deviled eggs and ham rolls ups. Just... keep them away from me. Because I will eat them. All of them. For real. Thank God I also ordered the chicken and waffles because otherwise nobody else would have gotten a chance to try the deviled eggs. The pickled red onion and dijon mustard went super well. Thumbs up! For dinner I went with the fish tacos. They were on special a few months back and they were so well received that they went on the permanent menu. I remenber loving them last time, and they came with some sort of siracha mayonaise aioli which was killer. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy them as much the second time around. Don't get me wrong, the fried cod was great. I just felt there was too much cabbage on mine. I could have done with a bit less to be honest. For dessert (because you know I always have room for dessert!) we got the chocolate lava cake. I like 501's approach to dessert because they will actually bring out a tray of their desserts for you to look at. Genius. You know how hard it is to turn down desserts when they are RIGHT in front of you? Well. It's almost impossible. I feel like every restaurant should do this. I feel like they would sell more for sure. The chocolate lava cake was good but kind of basic. It's not like I was blown away. I mean, it's chocolate cake and ice cream. I feel like everyone has had this delicious combination at least once in their lifetime. All in all, 501 is still shining the brightest with their appetizers. We will definitely be back to try more of the newer menu items for sure. Stay tuned!
DETROIT SEAFOOD MARKET
I had an awesome day in Detroit yesterday. We originally headed down to check out the Detroit Rummage sale only to find out it was a huge dud. We got bait and switched! First of all, we were under the impression it was going to be MUCH MUCH bigger than it actually was. The only one who even got anything cool was my boyfriend who managed to get a large Atwater Brewing wooden ign for like $25. He claimed he âwonâ the rummage sale since nobody else bought anything while we were there. Honestly we thought we would end up being there all day and i think we were done in 40 minutes. Lame.
But not to be deterred that easily, we made the best of our day and found other things to do. We didnât just drive an hour for nothing. We visited a cool shop (the name eludes me at the moment), took lots photos and videos of the Heidelberg Project and even stopped in at 8 Degrees Plato beer store. (Basically itâs a corner store for craft beer lovers that ALSO has a tap room!)
I had made dinner reservations at the Detroit Seafood Market because I had a Groupon that was about to expire and I definitely wanted to use it. Let me explain my love/hate relationship with Groupon. I use them a lot. I buy Groupon and LivingSocial vouchers all time. I love using them at restaurants, because they really do come in handy when you want to go out to eat, but are running low on funds. Itâs always nice to remember âoh hey! I have that Groupon for $50 off the bill for that one place!â However, I have learned to NEVER tell your server at the begininng that you will be using a Groupon. Why? Two reasons. Just because I am using a Groupon doesnât mean I am an asshole who isnât going to tip appropriately. If my bill before was $75 and after the Groupon the total comes to @ $10⌠Iâm going to tip on the $75. But servers just assume so you literally will probably never see your server ever again once they hear the word âcouponâ. It sucks but I have fallen victim to this soooo many times.
The other annoying thing about Groupon is that I feel like I tell someone I have a Groupon and they just look at me like a retard and stammer out ââŚ.ummmmâŚ. let meâŚ. get my⌠managerâŚ.â Like they have no idea what I am even talking about. It happens to me CONSTANTLY. So believe me when I say, I was beyond thrilled when our server came over knew exactly what I was referring to when I mentioned it. I know I said I almost always wait until the end to bring it up, but this was a unique situation. We were given what is called a âselect menuâ. So we actually couldnât order off of their regular menu. Which we had to wait to be printed because I guess they had none?
While we waited, we went ahead and ordered some cocktaile. I wanted a Sidecar which came out looking nothing like the cocktail that was advertised in the photograph. No martini glass. No sugar on the rim. Lol. Hence the ânailed itâ picture above. But you know what? Even though I do reviews, I am not super high maintenance. My drink was good, so I wasnât about to send it back because I had a sugarless rim. I was ready to get a nice buzz on. Plus, itâs not the serverâs fault. Itâs the bartnders. My boyfriend had to wait quite some time to get his dirty martini and I had mine long before and that was after waiting for them to get a new bottle of Hennessy for my drink.
Our Groupon deal included one appetizer, two entrees and two desserts. So for the appetizer I went with the grilled romaine. I have made grilled romaine hearts on the grill one time before myself and that was last summer. And me and Ryan looooved it. So I decided to give it a try since I have never ordered it at a restaurant before. It was tasty! They definitely loaded it with parmasean cheese which is a ok with me! Grilled romaine is just hard to eat, ESPECIALLY if you are sharing it. Itâs not crunchy lettuce since itâs been grilled, so itâs just hard to cut.
My girlfriend ordered the calamari with a side of fully loaded mashed potatoes. Which I unfortunately didnât get any photos of. Iâm so used to just photographing my food, I really need to start getting on the ball and getting everyoneâs food on here! But unfortunately they didnât understand that she wanted those two things together so her calamari came out as an appetizer (and her mashed potatoes didnât come out until Ryan and I got our meals) so she was kind of bummed about that. But the server at least acknowledged that and apologized. Ryan ordered the Delmonico steak which he seemed to enjoy. His was a tad overcooked but not too bad. Once he got to the middle he got to âthe good stuffâ as he put it haha. However, my dish was amazing! Iâm half Italian, so I have a soft spot for pasta dishes. So I of course went with the Shrimp Florentine which is giant tiger shrimp tossed with pasta shells and baby spinach in a rich alfredo sauce and topped with shaved parmasean. Does it sound awesome? Because it was. I only wish I had enough room to eat the entire plate. It was that good. I feel like I was the only one really impressed with my entree lol. But then again, I usually win when it comes to ordering food. My boyfriend is constantly telling me that my food choice is always better than his. Haha. Itâs a gift!
While I couldnât finish my pasta dish, I did however save a spot for some dessert. We had two choices, a bread pudding and a berry cheesecake. Our Groupon allowed us both the desserts but the bread pudding had nuts already baked into it so that was a no go. So we just got two of the berry cheesecakes to share between the three of us! Iâm not gonna complain about two cheesecakes. Ever.
We each ordered one more cocktail to enjoy before sending for the bill and then we were on our way. Now. Would I come back? Maybe. But I probably wouldnât come back without a Groupon or something similar. Donât get me wrong⌠it looks nice when you get inside. Once you get in, the place seems like a definite date spot. High backed booths make many seat much more private. However, none of the candles on the tables were lit and it was 6pm. We lit our own. One of my forks had food literally CAKED on it. Really? Nobody actually noticed that? And Iâm not one of those people that says âthere is a water spot on my glass, i need a new one.â But this fork literally had food CRUSTED on it. I didnât say anything, I just swapped it out for another one since there was three of us seated at a table for about 6 people. Plus, we had just gotten there. The last thing I wanted was to start off on the wrong foot. But it was just little things that make this restaurant not all that it should be. The drink that I ordered didnât come out at ALL how it was advertised. Right next to us we had to listen to a larger party complain to their server about something too. I donât know what exacty happened but none of them were happy. All I overheard was the waitress say âyou are 100% right and I am gonna make sure that gets taken off.â My friendâs meal came out as an appetizer so she ate way before us. Little things like that are essential in creating a positive atmosphere. While my entree was amazing, itâs not somewhere I can really enjoy myself. They need to try a little bit harder because I read some reviews of people claiming how wonderful this place used to be many years ago. Iâve read people claiming they used to go there for their anniversary every year (which I see!) but that it has gone downhill immensely in the last few years or so. I donât know if they got new owners perhaps or what. But I think this restaurant has potential if they actually tried. Until thenâŚ
CAFE CON LECHE NORD
This is apparently the second location of a very popular cafe in downtown Detroit. Now, being that I donât actually live in Detroit, I havenât actually visited the original location. But I must say that I did enjoy my visit to this one! After drinking too much the night before, all I could think about was coffee. And I have had multiple people point me in their direction over the last couple of months. So Ryan and I hopped in the car and headed that way. I decided to go with what they are known for, which is the obvious Cafe Con Leche Latte. Ryan likes his coffee black, so he rarely ever ventures into the lucious world of latteâs and cappuccinos. We took a seat at their small bar while we waited for our sandwiches we also ordered. Food was definitely much needed.
I wish I had written down what the name of my sandwich was but I totally spaced and forgot. I tried looking it up online but with no such luck. It was a breakfast sandwich with eggs and prosciutto on it. That much I remember. But it was delicious! And made fresh which is another big win for me. If there was a Cafe Con Leche near me, I would definitely be a frequent visitor for sure. All we have around me are Starbucks and Tim Hortons. But the sandwich was just the perfect ammount of food to keep me full until dinner later that night. I left feeling satisfied and not overly full. I tend to overeat. >____> Unfortunately, Ryan hated his sandwich. I felt bad because I sat next to him happily munching away and sipping my delicious coffee while he sat there obviously unimpressed. Itâs not that the sandwich tasted bad or anything, he was just under the impression there would be some type of meat on it. Being a man, he canât be expected to eat a sandwich of just lettuce, tomato and goat cheese lol.
But while his experience was meh, mine was very good. And again, if I lived in town, they would be a frequent stop of mine. They also had their own home roaster? I have never seen such a thing before but it definitely looked interesting. It made me realize that I donât know jack shit about roasting. It looked very scientific with the charts and graphs. Not my skill set. You roast it, I will drink it and report back. :)
BOBCAT BONNIEâS FOR BRUNCH!
Man. Let me just say. Their brunch game is strong. Just a stoneâs throw away from our casino, it was the obvious choice for brunch the following morning. Plus, I donât know about Ryan, but I definitely drank way too much the night prior. So my tank was running on E. I needed food! Iâve been wanting to check this place out for a few months. My best friendâs girlfriend and I almost ventured down a couple months ago, but the weather was bad so we decided against it and went somewhere local. But this wasnât dinner. This was my favorite meal of the day. Brunch!
We managed to beat the crowd because the place was dead when we walked in. However, by the time we left? There was quite a long wait to get in. Always a good sign and how you know a restaurant is doing something right. Upon walking in, we found that not only did they have a build your own bloody mary bar but a build your own mimosa bar! The bloody mary barâs are beginning to be a must at any brunch offering. Seriously, if you donât have one, you suck. But a mimosa bar? They had multiple juices and assorted fruit toppings that they had at your disposal. I am definitely more of a mimosa person. I like bloody maryâs, but I can never finish one. Hard as I try, Iâm usually over it about halfway through. And they were a steal. Only $3 per drink. Ryan also discovered a new flavor of hot sauce that he has since become obsessed with. Chili Garlic. And I have to go all the way to Walmart to get it for him (I hate Walmart. I only go there if I have to or my local Meijer happens to be out of a particular something I need).
Another reason I am partial to this place is because⌠I am a 90âs baby. I was born in 1987 so I grew up in the 90âs. My favorite time of day is noon, because thatâs when the retro lunch comes on the radio. My favorire Pandora station to listen to? 90âs Hits. Everything about the 90âs was amazing. And what do you think they play non stop throughout youâre entire brunch experience? Thatâs right. 90âs. Everything from Destinyâs Child to Backstreet Boys. It was as if this place was made just for me.
And to my right? Top Gun. To my left? 90âs cartoons. Now I just want to live here.
Making a decision was difficult. I literally couldnt decide between like⌠4 things. I decided to go with something sweet in the end. We had breakfast the morning before and these two girls sitting beside us had ordered french toast. It had been on my mind ever since. So I went with the Captain Crunch French Toast. I do not regret my decision. In fact, it was in my top 3 of french toastâs I have ever had. In the picture it doesnât look like much. But trust me. Once itâs dredged in maple syrup and you bite into that Captain Crunch crust⌠you will know what I mean. Itâs super crunchy on the outside and moist and delicious on the outside. Letâs just say, I ate my entire plate, if that is any indication on how good it was. That almost never happens. There is always french toast leftover. Itâs gonna be really hard for me to not order this next time I visit for brunch.
IRIDESCENCE
We recently had to make another trip down to the D (do you see me complaining?) for Ryanâs end of the year Belle Tire party. I went last year so this was going to be my second year attending the event. It was also going to be held at the same venue as last yearâs, which would be Motor City Casino. Now, this time last year I was juuuust beginning to step up my foodporn game. And the plus oneâs are only allowed to the after party, which doesnât begin until after cocktail hour, awards ceremony and dinner. So what did I do last year when it came to food? I ordered room service. Which wasnât bad at all, I kept it simple. It also led to a hilarious photo of me eating red velvet cake while taking a bath, but thatâs another story for another time. :)
But this time, I would be damned if I was going to settle for room service. So I got all dolled up in my flashy white and gold outfit and took the elevator up to the 16th floor. At the top of the casino is a beautiful restaurant called Iridescence. Honestly, the few quick photos I snapped donât do the place justice. Seriously, if you are looking for a romantic setting, complete with a gentlemen playing the piano for your listening pleasure, then this is the place. I made a reservation for one and took a seat at the bar.
I swear, when everyone found out I was dining alone (my friends, I mean) everyone was so apologetic. I couldnât understand why. I guess itâs not as socially acceptable to dine alone? Just like people think itâs weird that I sometimes go to the movies alone. Why? You sit in a dark room, nobody is paying you any mind. Everyone is watching the movie, not you. Anyway, Iâm getting off topic. I donât mind dining alone. Iâm an avid people watcher. I have turned it into a sport.
So I ordered some cocktails and jumped in head first with some Crab Rangoon Nachos. Basically, these were my favorite part of my meal. And thatâs not a bad thing. I only wished I would of had more of them. The lump blue crab was melt in your mouth good and the chips were very small and brtittle. Basically, as soon as I bit into them they fell apart in my mouth. Not a bad thing. But as a true dining appetizer is supposed to be, the serving was small and came out served in a mini cast iron skillet. I would definitely order these again. I am unsure if you can order these inside the actual restaurant or not. I was dining at the bar and they were listed underneath âBAR SNACKSâ. So you may or may not ony be able to order these at the bar. Ask your server!
Next I decided to order the Kobe Beef Sliders. Not long after they came out, my boyfriend came up and joined me. The awards and dinner had gotten over with way earlier than I had anticipated, but I wasnât upset that now I had company. The sliders were tasty but nothing super impressive. I let Ryan eat most of them.
For my entree I had totally had my eyes on a lobster pasta dish. But once I saw the picture of the Atlantic Salmon via Southwest on their super fancy iPad menus (love those!) I decided to go with that. I am easily persuaded when I see avocados. My entree took a little while to make it out to me, but I am a patient person. Plus, I was well on my way to a nice buzz at that point. I believe I was on cocktail number 3 at that point. My bartender sure could make a good strong drink. ^_~ Actually, for my 4th and final cocktail, he made me a special cucumber beverage that wasnât on the menu. Just a little something out of his own book. Anyway, the salmon was cooked perfectly. The only thing I didnât like about the dish was the black turtle beans. I had never heard of such a thing and upon biting into one, I found that they just tasted like dirt. Definitely not for my taste buds. But other than those little black beans, the dish was good. I kinda left wishing I had gotten my original pasta dish. Perhaps next time.
The after party was starting downstairs so I ordered my dessert and got the bill. The man playing the piano directly behind me was still going strong as I munched on these delicious handmade donut holes. Oh my goodness, were they good. Probably my second favorite part of the meal. Drizzled in caramel and resting in a bed of some sort of delicious custard, they were truly the perfect end to my fine dining experience.
I would definitely recommend this restaurant if you are looking for something on the fancy side. And I would definitely advise dressing nice. I donât think itâs required, but if you donât, you will just immediately feel underdressed.
And if possible, order those crab rangoon nachos. ^_^

THE CREST GASTROPUB
After my photo shoot was done and over with (along with my diet) we decided to grab some dinner before starting the trek back home to Michigan. A place called The Crest was next on my hit list. Immediately upon walking in I knew I was gonna like the place. It just seemed to fit me. Also, might I add, it was kind of hilarious walking around the town of Columbus the rest of my day in my ice queen hair and makeup. I definitely got some strange looks from people and a couple of people even stopped to ask me if I had just come from a show or a play.
But strange hair and makeup or not, my appetite cannot and will not be surpressed. This place is a good spot for some great Ohio craft beer. Everything I had I really enjoyed. I even tried some mead that was awesome. For an appetizer I went with the honey glazed goat cheese. (I ordered mine without almonds because of my nut allergy) I loved them! Ryan said they tasted like a dessert but I didnât think so. I mean, they were sweet but not like⌠decadent sweet. The soft honey glaze really complimented the tang of the goat cheese. Now, not everyone likes goat cheese but Ryan and I love it.
Moving on to my entree, I took one look and immediately set my menu down. Sometimes an item just jumps out at you and you just know. The bison burger with truffle fries on the side. And it tasted just as good as it looks in the photo, trust me. And the fries were perfect! I am pretty sure I ate my whole burger and damn near almost ate all the fries. No calorie left behind! Thatâs what I always say.
Dessert was a pumpkin mousse that I ordered because I was actually texting back and forth with my best friend Frank. He was back home house/dog sitting for me and he is the biggest pumpkin fan I have ever seen. I should also mention he is a huge metal head with a mighty beard and he basically turns into a basic white bitch for anything that is pumpkin related. So Frank. This mousse was for you.
It was the perfect end to a delicious meal. I would definitely recommend The Crest! (But for real, that bison burgerâŚ)
WOLFS RIDGE BREWERY
I know the name of the blog is Mitten Muncher, but we ventured out of town about 2 weeks ago. To visit the beautiful city of Columbus, Ohio. I know, I know. As a fellow Wolverine, you may be wondering what possessed me to venture into âBuckeye territoryâ. I actually had a photoshoot with the Ironwood Wolves, which is a wolf sanctuary that actually offers anybody who is willing to have their photos professionaly taken with their wolves. I have done one before and I had so much fun that I immediately wanted to do another one.
And say what you want, but Columbus is a beautiful city. And right up our alley as they are certainly up and coming in the craft beer scene. When we arrived and checked into our hotel, I was starving! I knew I had to eat something so I figured⌠you know, Iâm doing a wolf photoshoot. So why not check out Wolfâs Ridge Brewery? It was a five minute walk from our hotel room which was perfect since I definitely planned on having drinks.
Let me first start off by saying that this was some of the fanciest bar food I think I have ever had. Because, when you think brewery or tap room, your mind wanders to a certain idea of what their menu is going to look like. And itâs going to consist of an assortment of fried menu items, nachos as well as greasy burgers and crafty sandwiches. This was not the case here at all.
We sat at the bar and I first ordered a Dire Wolf. A deliciously awesome heavy stout that was so good, I donât even remenber what else I had to drink that night. And I of course had to order it because of the name because duh. Game of Thrones is awesome.
I couldnât just pick just one appetizer because my one true sin is gluttony. So I started with the Orange Chicken and the Bread and Butter. I will get to the bread and butter in a minute, but letâs start with the orange chicken. The orange chicken tasted great. And the preparation was beautiful. And you reaaaally got the taste of the orange zest. Some places I find it lacking, but not here. I got a good laugh because one of the ingredients kind of tossed in on the side was a firecracker chili. I will vouch that they look just like pickled green beans. And Ryan dove right in and popped that sucker right in his mouth. No holding back! His cheeks turned so red and his beer was gone in about two gulps. He said it took the rest of the meal to get the taste out of his mouth. Haha. As his expense I got a good laugh. And after that he pretty much left the rest of the orange chicken to moi. The whole star of this meal was the bread and butter. Literally, that is what youâre looking for on the menu. Just regular old bread and butter. Or so they want you to think. But this was my first experience with⌠TRUFFLE BUTTER. Thatâs right. You read that right. Truffle butter. All the things I love and adore about both white truffles and butter⌠now combined into one. And it comes smeared on a toasted slice of artisan bread with herbs and roasted grape tomatoes. I canât say enough good things because it was absolute perfection. I think it was my favorite thing I had during my visit. I was bummed that I had to share it with Ryan lol.
For dinner I knew I had to keep it light since I was having my photo taken the following morning so I opted with the Halibut which according to the bartender was a popupar menu item that evening. The halibut itself was amazing but I wasnât a huge fan of the horseradish that came with it. Thankfully it was on the side so I could avoid it. I am weird with horseradish. I like it on some things but halibut just wasnât one of them. However, on the side I had ordered some horseradish mashed potatoes. And holy crap. They were amazing! I absolutely loved them! In fact, I think I liked the mashed potatoes more than my actual entree believe it or not. The horseradish was not very thick which is probably why I loved them so much. Trust me, I would totally order these again.
All in all, it was a great meal. I wanna say we got there around 9pm and the place was packed. We sat at the bar just but we always sit at the bar anyway. But I wanna say there was only one available table when we got there. Around 11pm when we finally decided to stumble back to our hotel room, the place had pretty much cleared out. We had a great time and both bartenders were very available and attentive to us. One of them told us that they named it Wolfâs Ridge because back in the day, Columbus used to be overrun with wolves.
If youâre in town, definitely make this one of your stops. Just be prepared for a more upscale menu. If you are looking for greasy burgers and fish and chips⌠then this place isnât for you.
JOLLY PUMPKIN ROUND 2
There is a lot going on in Midtown right now! The new Jolly Pumpkin is one of the newer additions worth mentioning. Too bad it was Sunday and everything closes early. I would have really of liked to check out the Shinola shop. And apparently Jack White of the The White Stripes opened up a store right next door? It was closed so I didnât get a chance to wander in and check it out for myself but Ryan was telling me that there was clothing and in the back it specialized in vinyls and rare finds? Sounds like that something that would be right up my alley. Iâm a music junkie.
Anyway, we have been here once before. Ryan was too drunk to remenber lol. But I posted a review on my Instagram page awhile ago. And I expressed some dissapointment that our pizza arrived uncut. Silly me, I just thought⌠I dunno, maybe that was the cool new hipser thing? Haha. Maybe I was a tad too drunk myself. But whoever is in charge of the Jolly Pumpkin Instagram account was nice enough to direct message me and not only apologize but offered a complimentary pizza. So we figured⌠why the hell not? Free pie is free pie.
I started off with the Caesar Salad which Ryan didnât like at all. I didnât think he would as soon as I read the description. He isnât a fan of kale. Too earthy for his tastebuds. I liked it though. And the rye croutons were super yummy. I have been on a rye kick lately. If I am having breakfast and rye bread is an option⌠Iâm totally going rye baby. If you donât like kale, then you probably wonât be a fan of this salad. Itâs better to get a mix of a little kale, a little lettuce, and cheese and a crouton. That way the earthy grassy taste of the kale isnât super overpowering. Ryan just shoved the bowl over to me after about two bites. Ha. Saw that coming.
We wrestled between two pies and in the end decided on the Pork Pie. The bartender vouched for it and said it was her favorite so we went based on her expertise. We were concerned because it comes with chili as a topping and we thought it was gonna make it soggy. But no such problem occured. The pizza was super delicious, I was stuffed after two slices. The only thing I wish I would of done differently was order it without sausage. A pizza without sausage you say? Blasphemy! But this wasnât just normal sausage. It was fennel sausage.
-_-
I. Hate. Fennel. I hate it so much. And the flavor of it is so strong to me. I literally was picking pieces of sausage off my slices and putting them on Ryanâs plate. Lol. I didnât even know there was such a thing as fennel sausage but I guess so. Ugh. Itâs just one of those things you either love or hate. Fennel I mean. Not sausage. Let me also say, that this is no way a testament to Jolly Pumpkin. Itâs just my personal tastebuds. The food itself was great.
Service was a little slow. I feel like I had the same problem the last time we came. We sat at the end of the bar which just so happens to be underneath the âOrder Hereâ sign. And I swear, like 3 people just walked right up and ordered drinks while we sat there waiting. I am a patient person though so I wasnât gonna complain. The second beer I ordered totally got abandoned and forgotten about. She filled my beer but then left it up under the tap for almost 10 minutes. The pizza came out and I still hadnât gotten my new beer, my boyfriend finally spoke up and asked if she could turn around and grab my beer. She apologized, I wasnât upset. But I dunno, it just seems sometimes the service is a bit lacking. Iâve had way worse though.
The menâs bathroom is super cool! Not that I went in them, haha. That would be weird. Ryan sent me a Snapchat and the menâs urinal is actually a keg! Like, they took an actual keg and made it into a urinal. I review restaurants. He reviews toilets.
All in all, it was a good night. I will probably never order the Pork Pie again but thatâs just because fennel sucks. But hey, if you like black licorice flavor then this is the pie for you. ^_^
I walked out with a couple oatmeal and raisin cookies from the Avalon bakery. Iâm unsure of where thatâs at but I will be sure to look it up. They are super tasty!
Definitely check Jolly pumpkin out if given the opportunity. Mostly sandwiches and pizza on the menu. So you canât go wrong.
BROOKLYN STREET LOCAL!
Stayed up waaaaay past my bedtime last night but I am never too tired to pull it together for a breakfast outing. Itâs the most important meal of the day, after all! We ventured down to Corktown, where the roads turns to brick! Brooklyn Street Local is a little tiny hole in the wall, which is right up my alley. The parking lot sucks. Itâs dirt so itâs full of pot holes (big ones, mind you) and there is a big sign which reads âPLEASE DONâT LEAVE VALUABLES IN VEHICLEâ. Whatever. Iâm from Flint. You donât scare me.
Once inside, the place reminded me a lot of Roseâs Fine Food from Grand Rapids. Itâs small, but cozy. We were seated at the counter which is what Ryan prefers anyhow, so I wasnât bothered by it. When Iâm hungry, Iâm certainly not picky where I sit. Just bring me some eats.
Once I saw the menu, I noticed that almost everything was locally sourced. Which I am a BIG supporter of. They also had some pretty appealing specials that they were offering, including a Thanksgiving poutine which included stuffing and cranberry sauce. But I went with the Breakfast Poutine.
I am so thankful to Canada for introducing us to this wonderful dish. Putting gravy on top of fries wins everything. And the cheese curds were perfect. Honestly, you can put a fried egg on anything and call it breakfast whatever. ^_^ Ryan got the same thing. The first time I actually tried poutine was about 2 summers ago at Comerica Park with my friend Tish. And it was on a hot dog. But this poutine I had today was in my top 3. (The other 2 being at Grange in Ann Arbor and Public House in Las Vegas)
However, one bad thing was the roasted red potatoes that Ryan ordered on the side. They literally tasted like they had been soaked in dish soap. This is not a joke. And like an idiot, he leaned over to me and said âthese taste bad, try it.â And like an idiot, I did. Ugh. Disgusting. I am unsure if that was how they normally taste or what, but they were gross. Blegh.
I almost actually spit it out but didnât want to make a scene in public lol. I even considered asking the waitress behind the counter to taste one, just to see what she thought of it. But I decided against it. I quickly gobbled up a few more bites of my delicious poutine to get rid of the taste.
All in all, I would go back. That breakfast poutine was legit, trust me. Just donât order those potatoes on the side, whatever you do. And you will all be pleased to know that all my valuables were where I left them. ^_^
Anyway. GO RED WINGS!
DARK SATURDAY @ HOPCAT
Dark Horse Brewery teamed up with Hopcat this past Saturday night and Ryan and I were lucky enough to attend. We literally flew home from Las Vegas a couple of nights ago but we didnât want to miss this. Dark Horse broke records bringing in over 150 taps. They had about 30 different variations of their Crooked Tree that was available upstairs.
When we got there it was PACKED. I mean, I haven seen Hopcat that packed since we first went back when it opened. Last August I believe? The wait just for the two of us was about 45 minutes, but we managed to grab a seat at the bar after about 20 minutes. We are getting pretty good at hovering.
There was a ton of awesome beer there. I tell people all the time, if you are a craft beer drinker, this is the place to be. For sure. I have been to the Grand Rapids original location as well and I much prefer our Detroit location. The first one I had to try was the Belgian Waffle. Some of the others I tried was Captain America, Rye Kwon Do and I Burnt My Fucking Toast. All were fantastic!
As we all know, if Iâm gonna drink⌠Then I need to eat. We ordered the Spinach, Stout and Artichoke Dip for our appetizer. We wanted to try something new since we usually go with the Loaded Pretzel Nuggz (SO. GOOD.) It was great! The best part is the baked pita chips. I donât really care what kind of chip it is, as long as itâs super crunchy. And these held up. And they seemed to be dusted with some sort of ranch seasoning? Made them even better! Would definitely order again.
I was a little let down because I have been looking forward to trying their Uber Burger for awhile. Yes, it is (or was, I should say) named after the popular taxi service and as far as I knew, only available at the Detroit location. Donât quote me on that though. But anyhow, when I asked about it after being unable to find it on the menu, the bartender informed me that they werenât serving it anymore. They actually changed their menu back in September. Another menu item that I was sad to see no longer available was the Grand Royale. It was a delicious sloppy joe sandwich and Iâm sad to see it gone. But I wasnât deterred! Instead I went with the Killer Mac & Cheese. I added some bacon, chorizo and mushrooms. It was uhmayzing. I could have eaten the whole bowl. It took will power but I stopped at half lol. I was bummed that Ryan didnât really care for it. We almost always agree when it comes to food. But he just thought it was meh. Not me! I thought it was super creamy. Just how I like it!
After I finished stuffing my face we headed upstairs to the private VIP section they had. Ryan and I were invited earlier in the night by our friend Chris who now works with Latitude 42. But we know him as he used to be the bartender at our friendly neighborhood back alley burger joint, The Torch. I kind of wish we had gone up there earlier, but it didnât sound like a for sure thing. And with it being as packed as it was, I didnât want to give up our seats just to get up there and be turned away. But it was tented and heated and it wasnât bad at all. Iâm always cold and I was comfortable. They were so lucky upstairs because they had free all you can eat crack fries. Say whuuuut? It was a damn crack fry bar! I was too stuffed at that point though so this was actually a crack fry free visit this time around. And that has like⌠never happened.
After some friendy banter and the sharing of more Dark Horse brews, we decided to call it a night. Well, Ryan had to go scratch his gambling itch before we actually called it a night, but I think he is retiring from that activity for a bit. Lol. You canât win em all!

Pizza Friday is upon us again! I swung by Jet's and picked up a small chicken paramesean deep dish and a side order of their Jet's Bread with pepperoni. Happy Black Friday everyone!
