i mean the trouble with it is that there is never one single character, or i suppose i should say one single truth, or i suppose i should say we are never privy to what that one single truth is, unless particularly that truth exists on a server that requires all its members to stream for all of their appearances, or the creator you follows happens to upload every single second of footage that they've recorded for the existence of that server, except that isn't quite the whole truth still, because what do you call the in betweens? the extradiegetical, the discord messages and the vague tweets, the slips and breaks and laughs as they fall out of character and then slowly shift back into--wait, where the fuck is the line? how do you split that? surely those contribute to the truth too, if we're going to be so extensive and pedantic as to call a cut out joke about holes and caves part of the truth. and is it fair to call the edited videos, what are really supposed to be the finished products, just half-truths? actually yes i think we should all get more comfortable with believing that. musicians are the most honest, writers are the biggest liars, documentarians are evil, and youtubers are the worst in between, and that's fine! my 2025 watchtime says it is. can we make a letterboxd for mcrp. if stableverse gets anything less than 5 stars i'm banning all of you. if the average rating for the whole site gets past 3 stars then we will have achieved world peace, or have gotten these youtubers to read some books and watch some films.
i'm getting distracted. this isn't even about media analysis. i just can't figure out what taxonomical terminology to use for "lines that can be heard in some manner in an edited video" vs "the version of this line that exists in this video", and this is entirely for transcript database reasons. (i also can't figure out where and how to exactly split the line when it's technically audible, since i know the truth from other perspectives, but any average audience member asked to recount it in full would probably miss the section that i know is technically audible. but that's a problem for future me, aka, the me in 5 hours.) any closet pedants following me, please advise </3 i'm drowning out here.
i wrote this with life series and vamps smp in mind so i had offhandedly dismissed streamed smps as being easier to capture the "truth" of, but now that i'm in the throes of a proper streamed smp again (why is bannerfall good.) im being forced to reckon with just how messy as fuck it all truly is :( i know i've complained about ccs not using distinct character names before but i really should've clarified to not get monkey's pawed by streamers having characters with Names still being so incredibly blurry with the actual distinction between in-character and out-of-character moments. of course that vagueness IS a significant part of what makes mcrp beautiful but it's making these transcripts really really annoying!!! is it owain or owen speaking? does it even matter?

this isn't even a "diagram", really, but i wanted to play around with fully capturing a scene from all perspectives involved or present and syncing them out based on a central "truth" (that is, the version of the scene that includes ALL lines audible from all perspective, or the closest that we can get to the "unedited", "real" version). terribly tedious and i won't do this again until i get better ideas on how to represent this, and i would probably just build upon this version bc i cannot overstate how fucking tedious this is. this was clarifying though in figuring out what would be needed for an ergonomic editor of something like this--block-based editing is a necessity, i feel like. dragging around in plaintext or markdown just won't do it, and typical subtitle/transcript editors are much too linear. perhaps recreatable in a spreadsheet?
this also doesn't really address things like scene cut differences, weird shit where somebody (bdubs) might just insert a random flashback and thus insert a scene that doesn't exist anywhere else (but also does, in a sense, because it's a flashback, oh god what's the source then), annoying edit sfx, etc. how much of the mob noises do i transcribe? should i have noted down all the times that jimmy got hit or swung his sword here? what tango was referring to with "look at this"? i'll likely land on a style guide that's very minimal, for my sanity more than anything else, though i think i'll keep it flexible so marginalia of that sort is feasible should anyone else be interested in picking up certain perspectives (and should i succeed in actually making this be something collaborative)
also ugh i'm not satisfied with how i went back and forth on splitting jimmy's "it's just glitchy" line here but if i have to relisten to the same three seconds of the same scene for the 50th time i might actually just die. i hope you understand. i could've faked this with fake data. i should've just done that. 5 lines, two perspectives. what the hell am i doing

This season, we are overjoyed to announce that there will be 10 languages represented on the server! This is an increase from the five languages from the last season, one of which was Korean; just ignore that the Korean members of the server weren’t banished to the early hours of the American morning and unable to play some days due to a lack of admins able to open the server for them, and pretend this testimony from the only Korean-speaking admin doesn’t exist!
There are 10 languages this season, meaning that there will be tons of creators, maybe even some of your favorites! (Just, you know… not anyone who isn’t famous. Or one of Quackity’s friends.)
Speaking of creators, guess who was present for the announcement trailer! That’s right, Mr. Beast himself!
Now, you might have heard about all these “workplace” “abuse” “allegations” from the last season, and I would like to say that there is no proof that any of that occurred! At all! If there is, it doesn’t exist, and if you bring it up, you’re racist and, worse, a hater.
Just ignore the countless former admins speaking out, the investigation into Q Studios by a foreign labor union, and the literal laws being broken. None of that is real, and, if you say it is, you literally suck and should probably see a psychiatrist idk
Any rumors of workplace abuse, workplace-specific xenophobia and sexism, for-profit volunteer work, internal mismanagement of funds, and mistreatment of employees are STUPID and DUMB! If you see anyone talking about any of this, tell them to kill themselves! Now!

(Just pretend that a majority of the French and Brazilian fans from the last server were bullied out of the fandom by users with Quackity’s face/name as their icon and bio on twitter dot com, and that a prominent Brazilian creator wasn’t forced to come out of the closet by toxic qsmp fans so upset that a Brazilian was up for an award that they teamed up with that creator’s abusive ex. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a qsmp fan from Brazil these days do the sheer amount of racial slurs they were called by the Hispanic qsmp community, many of whom came from Quackity’s own fandom. And, when all of this was brought up to him, Quackity responded with, “Well, they aren’t really qsmp fans.”, before doing a Valentine’s Day stream with Foolish.)
The QSMP 2 drops in two weeks on March 14! None of the entirely fictional workplace abuse rumors have ever been apologized for, and previous employees have not been paid what they are owed. There are no signs that working conditions behind the scenes have improved, and, if anything, the fact that there has been radio silence on something as egregious as actual violations of international labor laws is a potential sign of bad things to come.
