hello filmblr I need advice. this high school kid asked me to DP on her first narrative short (she’s done some docs) and I agreed, ‘cause why not? But her script is a mess and she keeps calling herself “director and DP” despite asking me on as DP. And now she says she’s working on the shot list. Which is what I should be doing? Is she overstepping her bounds or am I not used to someone else having the reigns?
You all should be working together on the shot list. She clearly has a vision, but every DP I've worked with, we work together to discuss how the film should be brought to life.
This is typical of first time directors, especially if she's done a lot of doc work before. In doc filmmaking it's usually the one-woman/man army ideology, narrative is much more team based.
Ensure that you are the sole person getting DP credits (never once have I heard of two DPs) and help with the shot list. Film is collaborative and if she doesn't understand that, then she will crash and burn.
With the script? No idea how you could potentially fix that. Once again, most first time filmmakers (myself included once upon a time) are hyper sensitive about their work. It's tough to be like "hey, this isn't that great." Or "did you have multiple eyes on this yet?" Just see if she wants help in that regard, but if not, you're not getting writing credit so I wouldn't worry.

I am a straight, white boy pursuing a degree in film. I understand what you're trying to stop, however, don't generalize. My goal with a film degree is to make films that are diverse, inclusive, and not generic rip-offs that follow the same tropey bullshit for men and women alike. We live in a massive world full of different people and it's time that films and television shows realize that. I may never make it to the level I hope because of my need to exemplify diversity, but I don't care. The conversation should continue to happen until it's fair for everyone. Film is an art form and shouldn't be focused solely on white male protagonists saving the damsel in distress woman in hopes for sex, or having women die for the sake of the man's story. I apologize on behalf of some of the other straight, white boys, but trust me when I say there are plenty of us trying to inspire change as well.
Male writer: This female character that I’m writing has a deep dark secret.
Male writer: Something so horrible that she can’t tell a soul…
Male writer: This female character has literally the saddest back story anyone could ever imagine and no man could ever love her because of it and she cries herself to sleep every single night because she’s such a monster.
Male writer: She’s……………… infertile.

at least one female character with her own narrative arc that is not about supporting a man’s story
The Sexy Lamp:
a female character that cannot be removed from the plot and replaced with a sexy lamp without destroying the story.
