The Black Hole, directed by Colin George-Babb is a cosmic disco musical. A dream brought to life in stunning IMAX 150 mm film.

An all black crew of black astronauts come across a derelict spacecraft that was long thought to be lost. It doesn’t really have a crew but a bunch of robots, the lone human occupant being the last survivor of the old crew who is frustratingly vague about what happened to the old crew. This is where the similarities to the 1979 Disney film, of which it is a VERY loose remake, end the lone scientist is revealed to be an Eisley brother esque demi-god, Rah-heen Heart (played by Lil Nas X).

Ruth Carter proves to still be in her element with stunning costumes as the crew is transformed into star children by their journey through the cosmos they exoerience true freedom for the first time. Space is a cosmic dosco ball and the music is a campy throwback to the 2020s particularly Beyonce's Alien Superstar.

On the other end of the black hole, the crew have merged with the robots and are now capable of grooving at lightspeed. They contemplate the lives they left behind on earth and philosophize on whether they can or even should return to earth. All of this is punctuated with a pulse pounding, groovy, funky disco track by Lil Nas X who eats this part up.

The film is a feast for black film lovers with references and homages inspired by the Wiz and Daughters of the Dust. There is a three-faced space goddess (played by Zendaya, Uzo Aduba and Rebecca Andrade) who comes down at the end just like Glinda at the end of the Wiz space babies and all. It's an exhilerating feast for the eyes as the crew are transformed during the song "Taking the High Road".

While not a musical in the same way as The Greatest Showman or Dreamgirls the musicality of the characters pushes the narrative forward and reflects each individual character's arcs. As they literally bend star patterns and sleep on nuclear clouds, they define their own existance away from the bounds of earth.

When they come into conflict with their narrator and what he did in order to bring them to this new level of power. The crew are metaphopically pulled back to earth as they come face to face with the unintended costs of their new power. By the end the choice that the crew makes is left hanging but for them the possibilities are endless.

My whole life, I've been told that I "talk white". It's something that I used to be insecure about but as I got older I grew to understand that our people code switch and there is no one way that black people sound. So when Sorry to Bother You came out in 2018, a movie about a man who literally monetizes his white voice, I was hooked. Starring fellow San Bernardino native Lakeith Stanfield as a broke dude who get's a job at a telemarketing company, he quickly learns that he can find greater success and make more money using his "white voice" over the phone. This voice (dubbed over by David Cross) is meant to put customers at ease and he quickly rises up through the ranks of the company. Eventually a great conspiracy is uncovered and the film goes off the rails in a hilarious way.

It's interesting that Stanfield's use of his white voice becomes representative of his connection to the culture. When he uses his real voice he is "down". He's involved in revolutionary acts and organizations, he's connected to his community and he is genuinely in love with his girlfriend, Tessa Thomson.

Side note, I know their characters have names but they're basically extensions of Stanfield and Thomson's personas so I'll be referring to them that way.

As he uses his white voice, he is noticed more by his higher ups at work, he makes more money, is less involved with his community and while he and Thomson are living in a nice apartment in the best part of town, avoiding being forced to move into what is essentially a company town called "Worry Free", their relationship clearly is fracturing. There are even times when he uses his "white voice" outside of work. He's making a complete ass out of himself.

I'm an Oscar nerd. They're my super bowl. I'm aware of their problematic and exclusionary history and VERY aware of how black films have been systematically excluded for them over the last one hundred years. That being said, when a black film does make it into the Oscar conversation, It's worth exploration. This year at the 97th Academy Awards, Nickel Boys was among one of the ten nominees for best picture. This film was raw, triggering, full of layered performances and is easily one of the best films of the year.

Nickel Boys follows two black boys, Elwood and Turner who survive at an abusive reform school in the 1960s south. Elwood, has a grandmother and a community who are working tirelessly to bring him home and Turner doesn't have any of that. The movie is shot entirely in POV and we only see the boys through each others "eyes". This gives the film such an intimate and tender look into the boys friendship as well as how they give and receive affection in very brutal conditions. This part of the film, I remember, wasn't well received by some members of my class but I loved it. So much media is focused on showing black men and boys as hard, tough and masculine but in real life some of the most deeply feeling and affectionate men in my life are black men.

This is what I love about film, it's power not only to entertain but inform.

The 1995 neo-noir film Devil in a Blue Dress, starring Denzel Washington is amazing. That’s it, end of review.

Denzel plays and ex-soldier, Easy Rawlins, who moves from Texas to LA when his GI Bill comes through. After buying a house in south central LA he has a girl over for an evening of mutually satisfactory love making, his paramour turns up dead. The death of this woman is connected to the disappearance of a white woman, the Mayor of Los Angeles’ ex-wife, Daphne Monet played by Jennifer Beals.

I love film noir and this movie feels like it was plucked right from the 1930s. Denzel is the quintessential hard boiled PI a la Humphrey Bogart and Jennifer Beals is the perfect femme fatale. From her architectural hair and titular blue dress that clings in all the right places, she evokes Joan Crawford and Barbara Stanwyck beautifully. Like other femme fatales before her, her intrigue lies in her dangerous ability to keep secrets and navigate through the story as bodies continue to pile up around her. This movie gives a glimpse at what the American public missed out on. When noir was at it's peak popularity, stars like Nina Mae McKinney and Paul Robeson were specifically barred from roles like Easy and Daphne Monet by the Hayes code. The Motion Picture Production Code, colloquially known as the Hays code was a set of rules that movies had to follow in order to receive funding and distribution. Among other things, the code forbade depictions of interracial romance (a major theme in Devil in a Blue Dress) and studios were hesitant to take the obvious route of casting two black leads for fear of alienating Southern moviegoers in the Jim Crow south.

Zola is a whole trip, from it’s origin, it’s shooting style and bubblegum pop colors. In 2015, Zola King, posted a 148 long Twitter thread. This thread had it all, sex work, murder and fat stacks of cash; naturally it went viral and caught the attention of the  likes of Ava Duvernay and Solange. Eventually after a series of false starts, it found a director in Janizca Bravo and filming began in 2018.

Zola is a waitress in Detroit who moonlights as a stripper. She meets another dancer named Jessica, played by Riley Keough, who convinces her to take a trip down to Florida on the pretense of making more money at clubs down there. Over this weekend, Zola finds herself basically being trafficked by Jessica’s pimp played by Colman Domingo.

This movie is hilarious. Keough's Jessica is toxic and self destructive and Zola, played by Taylor Paige is simply trying to survive one of the worst working weekends of her adult life. Zola quickly proves to be a much more adept entrepreneur than Domingo's X, which draws his ire and his admiration.

This film has the ability to make light of some very dark subject matter and that's what makes it so engaging. What are Jess' true motives, will X keep his word and let Zola go at the end of the weekend?
