Happy birthday sweet boy! (Sorry for the delay).
This year, his birthday had coincided with the NHK Thropy. It wasn’t a big deal. It had happened before and it was bound to happen again in the future. Having to compete on his birthday was nothing new and, as a consequence, he wasn’t expecting anything for it. They weren’t home and their focus was solely placed on winning. Viktor may have been there only as his coach, but he had kept himself incredibly busy with sponsors and such. Yurio and Phichit were also competing, but just like him, he had one thing in his mind right now: Winning.
So, when the medal ceremony finally came (he had somehow snatched the gold from Yurio’s fingers with almost as small a margin as the blonde had snatched it from his at the GPF the year before), he was only thinking of getting through the photos and the upcoming press conference.
By the time he was in the cab on the way to the hotel, his birthday was one of the furthest things from his mind. He was basically functioning on autopilot. It wasn’t that no one had congratulated him on it. Viktor had with an amazing breakfast in the morning and his family had called. Phichit had been his exhuberant celebratory self, with party poppers and all, when he arrived at the shared training facility and even Yurio had given him a perfunctiory “happy birthday”. But the events of the day and the high of consolidating himself as one of the GPF finalists had washed all that away.
That is, until he and Viktor arrived at what he assumed was their room (he had been following his fiancé blindly ever since the conference). The thing is, it is impossible to stay tuned out of the world when you open a door to an explosion.
“Happy birthday!!!” screamed the crowd assembled inside the small banquet room that he had been lead too. He blinked owlishly a couple of times before bursting into laughter.
“So, you didn’t truly know?” Viktor asked shyly to his left. He seemed quite pleased with his little surprise.
“No, I had no idea” Yuuri finally answered. Then, he went into the room and let everyone congratulate him both on his brthday and his gold. NHK may have taken place in Tokyo, but it was still Japan and Viktor had somehow gotten his whole family (the definition by now always included Minako and the Nishigoris) to come. The party assembled included Phichit and Celestino, Minami, Yurio and Otabek (who had flown in from China - his last competition- to see Yura), Yakov, Lilia and Mila.
He even got a few gifts, which include a bowl of Katsudon from his parents, a cat beanie from Yurio, a new bag from Phichit and a book from Otabek. The party didn’t ran particularlly long, it had been a tiresome day, but it was amazing still. By the time he had gone back to his room with Viktor, the Russian had literally carried him bridal-style.
To his surprise, his fiancé was the only one who hadn’t gotten him anything (not that he was expecting more that the breakfast and the party, which had already been far more than what he had been expecting).
“How far gone are you?” Viktor asked chuckling as he set him down on the bed and started working on his shoes.
“Mmmm, maybe I can stay up another ten minutes” he answered as he placed his index finger on his chin to mimick his lover’s gesture. “Why?”
Before he could answer, Viktor went to his nightstand and got a box out of it. It was a rather big box which caught Yuuri by surprise, specially when it was deposited on his lap. It was quite heavy.
“Vitya, this is too much! You even paid for my family’s stay here!” He complained.
Viktor looked so happy that it was difficult to argue with the man, so Yuuri simple removed the blue ribbon and lifted the lid of the box. Inside, wrapped in silk white paper was a new, state-of-the-art, custom-made white skates with an engraved silver and gold blade. The engraving recreated the snowflake inside of their rings, but it repeated it as a chain all the way from the toe to the talon.
“Viktor!” He wanted to complain. They were incredibly expensive (anyone in their field knew that). But now it suddenly made sense when Viktor took his previous pair and a specific set of measures from his feet a few months agos. To have his current skates renewed. He should have known!
He had obviously been quite too long because when Viktor spoke next, he seemed worried.
“If you don’t like them, we can…well, not exchange them but…”
He didn’t get to finish. Yuuri kissed him straigth on the lips and shut him up properly. When he finally let go, he said:
“Thank you. They are amazing. Don’t you ever dare propose something so nonsensical as that!”
Viktor finally breath in relief, kissed him once again and helped him to be. It was funny how, when you had the least expectations, thing could surprise you so thoroughly. He went to bed happier than he could remember and grateful of having this ridiculously amazing man by his side.
