in my mind, it's why joyce is so confused when hopper complains about him in s3. because that has never been the mike she knows. from her perspective, mike has probably always been all ''let me help you with that mrs byers'' and ''hi mrs byers! can will come out and play?'' mike has always respected her, because she respects kids. she treats them as little adults, rather than kids who don't know what's good for them. same thing with mr. clarke, the only other adult we see mike respect. hopper, in contrast, has a "I'm the adult and therefore I'm right" mentality that really rubs mike the wrong way.

I really like this about mike. he's a little shit but only if you deserve it.
