As another nurse to be, do you ever interpret pratchett's witches as magic nurses? I very much got that feeling while re-reading the tiffany aching series and its focus on basic witching tasks
ANON ANON ANON ANON listen the DEGREE to which I think this and truly believe it and find strength rereading Tiffany Aching books while studying to be a nurse is off the charts
I got an ask a long time about about favorite characters and I wrote this:
But for my All Time Faves: Granny Weatherwax and Tiffany Aching. Life changing characters, literally life changing. The Tiffany Aching books make me want to be a better person, and they make me want to be better in extremely pragmatic ways. I love Discworld witches. They are the absolute best witches, they are witches we should aspire to be, and they too exemplify marginalized femininity. And Granny Weatherwax and Tiffany Aching are both characters who combine this intense power with a sense of responsibility with a humility they would never call anything as haughty as humility [note from present Sarah: LMAO like these drama queens wouldnāt be haughty as fuck lol]Ā and they are just. So. Much. They are so much to me.
Look. My mom was a nurse for 19 years, and I ask her a lot about her time on the job. And one time she told me about how she had a patient who had a blockage in her bowels that was resulting in, amongst other thing, intense pain. And Mom put on a glove, put her hand up that womanās ass, and helped her take a shit, all the while chatting with her and keeping things casual. That to me is one of the most profoundly kind thing that one person can do for another: to help someone though their most intimate sufferings in a way that preserves their dignity.
Iām just saying, any witch in Discworld would, and probably has, stick their hand up a strangerās ass for their own good while chatting about the weather. And goddamn it, they make me think that I should too.
Which isnāt the whole of my feelings, is only the tip of an iceberg thatās deepened the most I go into my study and working with both birth and death, but. This is a pretty good start.Ā

Wound up talking about Soul Music to my partner recently, and I described it as a story about grief and memory; Susan is grappling with the question of whether or not her grandfather (who is Capital-D Death, as it turns out) was responsible for her parentsā deaths, and winds up being dragged into her grandfatherās work because heās too busy trying to get blind drunk and forget about what heās done. Because despite himself, despite the fact he swears he can give up emotion whenever he wants, heās fucking aching in sorrow and guilt for having to do what he did, because he had to do it, because they chose to live a mortal life.
And then I paused and said, āAnd the main plot is that a welsh guy invents rock and roll,ā and I think thatās the discworld experience summed up
