So while doing some pirate research for the play I’m writing I stumbled upon one of the most amazing things I’ve ever read. In the 5th century A.D. there was a Scandinavian princess called Alwilda who’s father tried to set her up to marry Alf, the Prince of Denmark. Alwilda wasn’t cool with this so she and some female companions dressed as men, stole a ship, and sailed away. Eventually they met a company of pirates who were in need of a new captain and they were so captivated by her that they elected her as their new leader. Her crew became so infamous that Prince Alf was sent out to stop them. When their ships met he took Alwilda prisoner and she was so impressed by Alf’s skill that she agreed to marry him after all and eventually became the Queen of Denmark.
I stopped caring whether this was factually accurate about halfway through because it’s completely AWESOME.
Medievalist here for triumphant fact-checking: this story is, if not true, at least true according to the history of the Danes (Gesta Danorum) written in the 12th century by Saxo Grammaticus. You can read his account of Alwilda’s story in the original Latin here, or in English translation here. Highlights include:
She exchanged woman’s for man’s attire, and, no longer the most modest of maidens, began the life of a warlike rover. Enrolling in her service many maidens who were of the same mind, she happened to come to a spot where a band of rovers were lamenting the death of their captain, who had been lost in war; they made her their rover captain.
I love the implication that there were lots of Danish maidens just WAITING for the opportunity of a life of piracy…
Reblogging my old post for this A+ addition to it
it’s weird that professional letters are supposed to start with “dear.” i don’t even call my mom that
my darling hiring manager. my springtime rose. if hired i will bring a strong work ethic to this position
Sivi is retired from nose work, but he got a turn last night bc Tyche is still recovering from her cold. One of the main reasons he is retired is because he LOVES to lie. He thinks it is very funny if he manages to trick me, and to him that is way more rewarding than actually finding the hide.
He is actually still lying at the very end. You can see him find the hide on the left chair, but he goes on to tell me it’s on the right chair. He CLEARLY found it on the correct chair but chooses to tell me it’s somewhere else.
Sibby face when he lies vs. Sibby face when caught lying

things i like about kingdom hearts as a series:
fun action-rpg gameplay with engaging combat systems, from magic spells and summons to lengthy combos with flashy finishers to team-up attacks to superpowered transformations. but you can also just mindlessly spam the attack button if you don't wanna bother with all that
easy to get into, they have hd remastered collections of almost every game in the series available to play on modern consoles. huge W for games preservation
story is so over the top it's funny yet still manages to be genuine. beneath all the hammy performances and cheesy dialogue it's a coming-of-age tale about a boy who wants to expand his horizons and is challenged by dark forces who reject emotional connections in their pursuit of power. it's very shounen-like with all that stuff about The Power of Friendship but it speaks to the human condition about what it means to be compassionate, to love and to be loved, to have a heart. also donald duck is here
the symbology GOD the symbology. everything has an emblem there's so much shit about Hearts and Darkness and Light and Stars. the aesthetics and world design are immaculate, it's exactly the type of setting that encourages preteens to make their first OCs or whatever. very fertile ground for artistic inspiration
lore that is absolutely buckwild, infamous for being insanely convoluted (which is not untrue) but also there are so many callbacks and internal references it's like an integrated story that's been going on for over 20 years. events of later games are often foreshadowed years in advance in a way that isn't always immediately apparent upon first viewing. trying to connect all the threads makes me feel like a conspiracy theorist in the best way
even if you don't give a shit about disney or final fantasy the original characters are more than enough to carry the plot; everything else essentially boils down to an extended cameo. facing off against cloud strife is dope as shit if you're familiar with him and his game but even if you aren't there's still enough sauce for it to stand on its own merits
AMAZING soundtrack from yoko shimamura, featuring multiple theme songs sung by utada hikaru that are all bangers
i mean just look at some of the artwork they've got on display here. this is like the sistine chapel for nerds
tldr play kingdom hearts

Something to keep in mind…. building muscle is so hard people compete to see who can do it best. If you’re a woman worried about “getting bulky”, i promise you that you cannot achieve that physique by accident. Now go lift weights to increase your bone density & protect yourself from osteoporosis and improve your insulin resistence and eat a fiber + protein dense meal with some carbs to refuel and fat for satiety + energy 🫵
trans women this goes double for you especially the part about eating 🫵 you are not immune to your bones becoming tapioca in your old age pick up the weights and the fork sister we’re all gonna build our new bodies if i have anything to say about it
“you support gay rights so you must be gay”

Diversity win! The alpaca is gay!

Genuinely sat there teetering on the edge of a panic attack watching Keir Starmer talk about how banning kids from social media will "give them their childhoods back" because I can't stop thinking about what it was like to be a lonely scared kid who can barely leave the house but still find friends who are just as weird as you and see youtube videos where people talk about being gay and web series where girls kiss each other and love each other and gradually start feeling like that is less of a shameful thing to want and I do not think this turd of a man has ever had to think about that kind of shit in his life
The important thing to remember is that Starmer is bold-facedly laying. He's not "giving children their childhoods back", as he said. It's more like he's giving adult parents their ideas of what their children's childhoods should be back.

Me: man I wish I knew more of my neighbors better
My nine-year-old neighbor: *crashes mom’s car into my yard*
Me: Be careful what you wish for I suppose
Honestly my first draft of this post said “my neighbor’s son” and then I was like wait a second that’s functionally the same as saying “my cousin’s sister.” That’s still my cousin and that’s still my neighbor.
Stop saying Calvin and Hobbes it’s important to me that Calvin is six and not nine.
I take it the nine-year-old was literally driving the vehicle?
The nine-year-old was literally driving the vehicle after knocking the gear shift into Drive apparently by accident. Seven- and five-year-olds in the backseat. Nine-year-old knows in movies people stomp down on the thing on the floor and the car stops. He stomps. It is the gas.
I was talking about Sherlock Holmes with my cool weird 42 year old coworker the other day and he said that he had read other works by ACD but not any Sherlock Holmes. ACD is smiling down from heaven on his one and only true fan.

Still holding on to light.
As with every oil lamp I make, I do a series of burns with different wicks to make sure that they produce a reasonably long, steady burn. Because of the way this lamp is constructed (with a small, difficult to access reservoir) there's a steel pin that keeps the wick from accidentally sliding into the lamp, and oil is added with a syringe under the hood. Worth it for this flame though! It'll burn at this level for about an hour--shorter than many of my lamps, but that's the tradeoff for a pose like this.
