42. genetic diversity in a population
The different genes present in a single population.
This is the Bat Family.
In the comics they're all white which isn't very diverse.
What a merry band they make.
Not very canon, but not much at Anime Expo is.
They exemplify genetic diversity because they have a wide range of phenotypes, and therefore a wide range of genotypes.
Bluh.
44. glycogen
A polysaccharide used as energy storage in animals and fungi, the animal version of starch.
These are Katamari Damacy fans cosplaying.
They're so spiffy in front of the Exhibition Hall entrance.
The videogame they're from makes so little sense I've almost got a headache thinking about it.
Gosh what great costumes though.
They have glycogen in their bodies.
All through their muscles and livers for if they're starving. Their bodies will eat themselves.
Heh.
58. lipid used for energy storage
Fat that can be used to fuel body processes in the absence of food.
This is Dave.
This is fem!trickster!Dave.
Fem!trickster!Dave is looking snazzy in Concourse Hall.
Fem!Beta!trickster!Dave. It goes on and on it's the name that never ends.
Dave exemplifies the use of lipids for energy storage by having body fat.
If ze was trapped in a mine for a week zir body would burn all that fat right up so ze wouldn't die of starvation so quickly.
Handy!

54. Krebs cycle
A series of chemical reactions that oxidizes acetate into carbon dioxide to derive energy for aerobic organisms.
These are Mindfang and Dualscar.
They're really good fancy Ancestor cosplays and I admire them a lot.
This picture is a little bad because the light in the LA Convention Center is not great for pictures at night.
And yet, what a cool couple. What a good ship.
These excellent costumed trollfolk are a good example of the Krebs cycle because they are undergoing it constantly!
That's how it works and it will happen until the day they die.
Life is horrifying!
20. cellular respiration
All the stuff that happens in cells as they convert foodstuff to ATP and then to waste.
These are Planned Parenthood volunteers.
They were soliciting donations outside Trader Joe's and they were both really cute.
Freely available reproductive healthcare for female-bodied people sure is great!
They're very hipster.
They exemplify cellular respiration because their cells are respirating right now.
Their cells are always respirating. They'll stop when they die.
Very hipster.
73. predation
When one organism kills and feeds on another.
This is Celty.
Celty is a dullahan, a grim-reaperish creature from Irish mythology.
She was cosplaying around at Anime Expo and wow what a quality Durarara! fan.
I don't imagine that was too fun a costume to wear though what with the full helmet.
Celty exemplifies predation because the human in the shiny catsuit is part of a society that eats animals all the time.
As for the character, she hunts people down to their deaths. And she's a biker.
Dreamy.
I have no idea why you're following me
beautiful creature.
21. cellulose
A polysaccharide found in the cell walls of many plants.
This is the Going Merry.
This is a boy dressed up as a ship.
Thats awesome, okay, someone wen around the LA Convention Center dressed as a boat.
This is the best cosplay, everyone else go home.
This ship-boy exemplifies cellulose because wood contains cellulose and boats are made of wood.
He's so awesome.
So awesome.

25. connective tissue
A fibrous tissue that makes up tendons and the connections between muscles and bones, among other bodily structures.
This is fem!Nazi Germany.
She's a Hetalia fan.
There was kind of a lot of Nazi-themed paraphernalia at Anime Expo, and it made me a little uncomfortable. Some of it I could see as totally justifiable but some of it just seemed really distasteful.
Picture taken in the Concourse Hall.
Germany exemplifies connective tissue because she has a bunch of it.
Connective tissue all up in this, ankles and elbows and head.
Pchoooo.
14. biological magnification
The accumulation of substance concentration when going up the food chain.
These are Daisy and Angela.
They were at the park for Daisy's going away party.
Maya baked a cake for it.
They look really happy.
They're an example of biological magnification because a lot of toxins have accumulated in their bodies from eating industrially produced food.
This makes me pretty sad because I like them. Also because the same thing is happening to me and that's kind of scary if I think about it too much.
Hhhhhgh.
10. ATP
Adenosine triphosphate, the main unit of energy storage within cells.
These are three members of Team Rocket.
They're at Day Zero of Anime Expo.
They're sort of unnamed mooks, but at least they're professional.
It's a shame they can't win, they seem dear.
They stand as an example of ATP because their cells use it.
As cells will.
To protect the world from devastation To unite all peoples within our nation To denounce the evils of truth and love To extend our reach to the stars above Team Rocket blasts off at the speed of light Surrender now or prepare to fight!
72. population
The organisms of a species in the same area at the same time.
These are BMO, Jake, Jake, Finn, male!Lumpy Space Princess, the Ice King, Marceline, and Cake.
They're in the Main Hall at Anime Expo.
What a good bunch of cosplays.
They're an example of population because they're members of the human population.
They also constitute, in a looser, somewhat metaphorical definition of the word, a population of Adventure Time characters.
Mathematical!
29. diploid
Having two copies of each chromosome in a cell.
These are Dean and Castiel.
They're in the Concord Hall of the LA Convention Center.
They're not particularly canon-accurate, as cosplayers go, but they're sweet and obviously doing it because they love the characters, so w/e/w/e/w/e.
Dean and Castiel have human bodies, and therefore human diploid cells.
They presumably have human haploid cells as well, but any attempt at confirmation would seem rather rude.
OTP.

35. epithelial tissue
The tissue that covers the surface of every body structure.
These are Feferi, Eridan, and Aradia.
They're actually cosplayers, and they're standing outside the LA Convention Center, but it's fun to imagine, isn't it?
They're quite good though.
Anyway!
They're exemplary of epithelial tissue because they have skin! Epithelial tissue is skin! Essentially!
As trolls they would have tough grey skin but as humans they have thin brownish-yellowish skin covered in makeup and what's presumably a blend of nylon and spandex!
I don't know why I'm shouting!
92. vestigial structures.
Structures on the body left over from previous evolutionary forms that serve no discernible purpose.
This is Joey.
Joey is cosplaying as Johnny Joestar outside the LA Convention Center.
Joey really likes Jonathan Joestar.
The mancrush she has on this fictional character is a little intimidating.
Joey and Johnny are both good examples of vestigial structures because they're humans and humans have a lot of perplexingly useless body-stuff.
Tailbones, wisdom teeth, the reflexive forming of goosebumps when cold or distressed, a variety of muscles, and the appendix are all vestigial structures in humans.
Good job, evolution.
