I guess I can’t work because everything seems so mixed up—so inconsistent—I cannot really be any one thing enough to want to say anything about it—

She was unbearably excited about Friday. Everything was set now, she knew what she was doing and how everyone was getting there- Merlin, if she ended up going alone and only having Sol to drag with her she’d consider it a victory. She’d been incredibly busy though and the scroll she was currently taking down by the lake was much needed, she’d been making posters and banners- even shirts- for the protest for days, her fingers ached and legs were in need of a good stretch. Minus that tiny mistake on the note itself she considered things to be going smoothly- it wasn’t as though people could hold her to a mistake that would disappear after five minutes anyway.
Lately Mini didn’t know what she was feeling. Especially with Professor Foley’s arrest and up coming trial. Since Harriet’s party she’d not said a word to anyone about what she had heard that night, instead retreating into herself. Trying to figure out if she should come forward in the first place. Eavesdropping on a conversation she knew she shouldn’t have heard in the was bad, but now that one of the said Professor’s involved had been arrested she wasn’t sure what to do.Â
Walking down the corridor Mini sighed, feeling an intense desire to hide, maybe if she hid everything would eventually go back to normal on it’s own. Having usually kept her metamorphmagus powers in check, recently she found it harder and harder to control.Â
Groaning Mee-Yon stomped her feet slightly, realizing her hair had changed from black to bright pink all on it’s own, defeated she left it alone. Instead turning the corner and bumping smack dab into Tamiko Naruse.
Ares plopped down on the bench and leaned across the table with his most charming smile.  “I need a favor.” Â
Looking up from her breakfast Mini Nowell knew she looked startled. And in fact she was, having been engrossed in the Prophet's headline about Professor Foley she hadn’t realized Ares Kane sitting in front of her until he spoke. Blinking back her surprise she swallowed hard.Â

Mini Nowell cursed silently. Quickly and quietly making her way through the halls of Hogwarts to join Harriet Pinnock's 18th birthday party, why she had let Piper talk her into wearing a skirt so short was beyond her now. Of course Piper was an easy influence, whether from her Veela magic or because Mini so blindly trusted her she didn't know. One way or another it didn't matter, what mattered was she was late, on top of almost forgetting to bring HJ the gift she'd gotten.
How she could forget something so important was yet again beyond her? The good thing was that she did remember (however last minute), and doubled back for the shiny red package in her hands. Turning a corner swiftly Mini startled slightly, before her were two figures bathed in moonlight, standing close together by a large window their hushed voices were just loud enough for her to hear.
"I thought they’d given up, they hadn’t contacted you for a few months, had they?"
"No, not for a while. I’d rather hoped they’d given up too."
Recognizing the first voice as Professor Parry and the second as Professor Foley, Mini stepped behind the wall she'd just come from. It was best to wait until they finished talking before she continued. If she didn't she could get all the upperclassman in trouble, and that would be in a nutshell disastrous. Peeking around the corner once more Mini watched as Parry stepped closer, affectionately touching Professor Foley's arm. Whatever they were talking about must have been important as she wasn't aware the pair were so close
"Why now, do you think? I understand Halloween but-"
The mention of Halloween snapped her to attention, her eyebrows knitting together in confusion as Professor Foley turned away, stepping toward the window before he spoke again.
"I imagine more than even they think they need allies, need to reinforce their place in the world if they’ve going to recover from this quickly. I have no interest in building up their empire though, I’ve told them before countless times, I’m debating not writing back at all."
"I think that might be for the best… From what you’ve said, if you begin to communicate they’ll never let this go, if you’re not interested then show that, you don’t owe them anything, it’s not as though they offered you any help when you most needed it- I’m surprised they can even ask you to join them, it’s ridiculously rude after everything that they’ve done… or not done-"
"Rudyard, it’s alright. Really, it is. I’ve always known who they were and how they handle things. They’re reaching out now simply because they want something, they want proof of loyalty from people I don’t have much to do with, as selfish as it sounds I’ve worked hard for my benefit and mine alone, if it happens to help others like myself along the way then I’m not unhappy about it but it wasn’t my intention. I’m here, working with people like you every day, because it’s what I wanted and nothing more."
"It isn’t such a small thing, you may like to say you did this all for you but there’s more to it than that, you can’t say you weren’t aware what this accomplishment would do for your community and those like it. I know you better than that, you care and- and perhaps you care enough to be persuaded to join them."
"It won’t happen."
Community? Mini blinked not quite comprehending what they were talking about. Obviously the pair thought they couldn't be overheard to talk about such a sensitive subject in public. Her eyes followed Professor Foley as he paced slightly, only stopping when Professor Parry reached out to him again.
"Professor Foley-"
"Rudyard, you really have to stop calling me that."
"Rowland then… You care, not just about them but about Halloween, something’s been different ever since. What happened- what you didn’t manage to stop- is something you care about."
"I won’t deny Halloween was a difficult time, I should’ve done more not because of who was under attack but because of where it happened, part of my job- of all our jobs- is to keep students here safe and I failed to save them from dealing with this. I have a lot of regrets, Halloween being one I have yet to fully forgive myself for, but that doesn’t change anything. I’m not interested in hiding away and making moves from the shadows, I don’t believe in playing games when so much is on the line."
"Will they keep writing, do you think?"
"Perhaps for a little while, I have friends in the community, perhaps they think if I join others will follow, or perhaps they think I should know more than I do about Halloween. Perhaps they think we all do. They wouldn’t though, alliances are unstable enough at the moment, an attack like that could dissolve everything and that is simply impossible, something like that could…"
"Rowland?"
"I’m alright, just thinking, and tired. Perhaps we ought to call it a night? I won’t write back, you don’t need to worry about that. I have no interest in getting involved with anything to do with them or the fallout from Halloween."
Deciding she had heard enough Mini turned away from the scene, trying to understand everything that had been said. Was Professor Foley somehow involved with the events of Halloween? Did that make Professor Parry an accomplice? And who are these they that the two spoke of?
Shaking her head Mee-Yon did not think anymore about being late for the party. Nor did she realize where her feet were carrying her. All that mattered was the conversation she'd overheard and getting as far away from the two Professor's as possible.
Nate wasn’t terrible at potions. In fact, contrary to popular belief, Nate wasn’t terrible at any of the subjects he was enrolled in. What he lacked, however, was the motivation and discipline required to actually study.Â
That’s where Harriet, the Queen of Discipline, came in. As much as she put on a public facade of wanting to witness Nate’s ultimate demise, when it came down to it, his sister had never once allowed Nate to actually fail–pulling all night cram sessions before exams and making sure his papers were proofed.Â
Which is why, being otherwise occupied this weekend with a horrifyingly long laundry list of other things to do, H had arranged for Nate to be tutored by quiet little wallflower, Mini Mouse, who was sure to be discrete, out of fear of the Head Girl if nothing else.Â
Nate rolled his eyes. “Is boredom part of the recipe? Because I’ve got that in fucking spades.”
She stared at him, her cheeks flushing pink at his use of the word fucking. HJ had told her that Nate had lacked discipline, that he might berate her, that whatever happened Mini had to keep teaching him. The Pinnock siblings were an interesting pair for sure, Mini didn’t know much about them but from what she could tell they were close. No matter what they’d have public eyes believe.Â
“I- um...” Closing her eyes she willed herself not to get anxious in front of Nate. Controlling her Metamorphmagus powers had been harder than normal lately, she assumed it had something to do with the stress of Professor Foley’s trial. But had been too afraid to think much deeper about it.Â
“HJ said you shouldn’t be smoking.” She replied quickly, closing her eyes as she dared to grab the cigarette out of his hand, tossing the butt in the trash.Â

Ulysses smiled at her as she sat down, as close to beaming as he came. He made no move to stop her sitting down with him so that was something at least. She didn’t annoy him quite as much as most others seemed to.
“Maybe.” Ulysses knew that she’d been teasing him but he answered sincerely and with an easy shrug. “A world tour of some of the most dangerous trees known to man. It seems like something that would be a lot of fun.” Maybe it wasn’t everyone’s idea of fun but Ulysses did enjoy Herbology and he genuinely seemed to have a morbid curiosity and a desire to go and see such plants. Not that he’d ever be able to justify going away. Leaving his mother for his education was one thing, leaving her for fun and his own selfish enjoyment was another. It just wasn’t possible. “Maybe we should talk to the Professor about it, see if he’d organise a school trip.”
He raised an eyebrow at the title, frowning slightly. “Homework or just a spot of light reading?” Light was a bit of a stretch but honestly, he wouldn’t put it past Mini to be doing something like that just for fun.
Leaning her head into her hands as he spoke Mini briefly day dreamed about a trip around the world to see the most dangerous trees. Smiling at the thought of just wandering wherever she pleased. Maybe even going home to Korea. Really if she were wayward traveler nothing would stop her. However, Mini was not and could no be truly free how she pleased. And it was this thought that snapped her back to reality.Â
“With everything that is happening on the grounds right now, I imagine a field trip like that might be out of the question.” It was unfortunately really, because there were many other students like Ulysses that would be plenty interested in a Herbology centered field trip.
Not knowing how to answer him Mee-yon was silent, torn between coming forward and waiting. There was no doubt in her mind that Ulysses was trust worthy, but Mini was scared, her fear only being amplified by what was happening out in the Hogwarts halls.Â
Sighing she shrugged. “Let’s just call it research.” Leaving it at that might have been the safest, at least until she figured some things outs.Â
…I feel my past like an unbearable weight. I feel that it interferes with my present life, that it must be the case for this withdrawal, this closing the doors.

“No, I can’t say I necessarily expected that to happen when I ashed into the cauldron…” Nate said with amusement as he watched the potion flare up dramatically, still holding his lit cigarette in one hand, “…but where would wizardkind be without a little experimentation, right?”
Mini Nowell had not expected to tutor this weekend. Normally she keep her teaching sessions to the beginning of the month, checking up on her students toward the end of the month to see what they had accomplished on their own. Nate, however, was a special case. He had apparently requested this particular session via HJ- that had been a particularly scary encounter.
Watching Nate throw ash from his cigarette in the cauldron Mini opened her mouth to protest, yet was too late as the potion flared.
"Experimentation isn't part of the recipe..." Mee-Yon muttered glancing down at her book and back up at the older Pinnock.
The library was a sort of haven for Mini Nowell. The quiet had always helped her think, and when she needed a place to hide from the busy halls of Hogwarts, it was the library she turned to. With the news of Professor Foley hanging over the school it seemed like nothing would get back to normal. Most students didn’t know what to do with themselves, and those who did seemed like they were better off keeping themselves busy enough so they didn’t have to think about it. Mini was the latter of the group, her prefect duties weighed even heavier on her now that the arrest and eventual trial would take place.
Sighing she fixed her eyes on the self in front of her, deciding this morning that she’d throw herself into her school work. She scanned the titles until she found the book she was looking for. Clutching the surface to her chest she began to make her way back to her table, only stopping when she heard the impatient voice of Ulysses Das.
Peaking her head around the corner she spotted the back of his dark hair, his head up in attention at a younger student across the way from his table.
Catching the tail end of his words, Mini approached smiling at the younger student and watching as he gulped nervously.
“There are some tables in back that might be a better place to sit.” She suggested pointing toward a small sitting area behind the shelves from which she came.
The younger student nodded and immediately gathered his things, not meeting
Ulysses eyes as he scurried away. A quick “Thank you, Mini” on his lips as he went.
Turning toward Ulysses she offered him a small smile, trying to defuse whatever mood he was in. “What’re you working on?”
Ulysses had just opened his mouth to go off on a tirade when he heard the decidedly more gentle voice of Mini approaching from behind and he slowly closed it again. Rather than shouting at the younger student, he settled for a moody glower instead (though now that he was in the presence and under the watchful eye of the Ravenclaw prefect, it was bordering on becoming a pout).
Whilst Ulysses wouldn’t say he as cruel as such, there was a little part of him that enjoyed the way the other student ducked from meeting his eyes and all but sprinted in order to flee from the table. So maybe he was cruel. At least he was rid of that awful tapping. He did have to hold back an undignified snort though at the little display of gratitude from the boy, as if Ulysses had been about to hurt him somehow and Mini was his knight in shining armour. He turned his head slightly to meet Mini’s gaze.
“Trees.” He said simply and closed the book before him, showing her the title Flesh-Eating Trees of the World. “Re-writing some notes for Longbottom’s class the other day.” Ulysses gave a sharp nod towards the book that Mini was cradling. “You?”
Most people were put off by Ulysses attitude, he could be harsh and sometimes come off as cold. Mini, however, was not one of those people. While the two were not best friends, they had found solace in the quiet company that the other could offer. Whether it was studying in the library, walking to class, or just sitting together by the black lake. The silence between them was comfortable.
Pulling out a chair across from him her eyebrows rose in curiosity at the mention of “flesh eating trees”.
“Are you planning a trip?” She asked hiding a shy smirk. Remembering the book she glanced down, reading the title out loud to him.
“The Unexplored Magical Properties of Veela.”
Normally if Mini had any questions about Veela’s she’d go and ask Piper. The blond had always been honest with her about pretty much everything. However, the night of Harriet’s party had scared her and so, for the time being she thought it best to keep her research to herself.
“Bloody hell,” Ulysses was hunched over the library desk, shoulders tensed, one fist curled tightly around his quill. His eyes were squeezed closed as he lost his temper at the incessant tapping coming from the person seated near him. His head suddenly snapped up, eyes fixed on The Tapper. “Do you mind?”
