Dear Philadelphia (and all participants in this day of action),

On January 19, as our collective energy buzzes at 1:30pm on 440N Broad St, as we begin marching at 2:00pm and finish symbolically on Independence Mall at 3:30pm, may we hold close the humble teachings of Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, a peaceful warrior who inspired Dr. King. In fact, Dr. King formally nominated Thich Nhat Hanh for the 1967 Nobel Peace Prize.

The creation of the laureate role, which will go to a comics writer or artist in recognition of their “outstanding achievement” in the field, is just one of a range of activities planned by new charity Comics Literacy Awareness with the intention of improving children’s literacy by raising awareness of the “variety and quality of comics and graphic novels today, particularly in the education sector”. The charity’s board of trustees include publishers, authors, librarians and academics.

Each year, we mark the International Day of Peace at Swarthmore College as part of Peace Day Philly. See http://www.peacedayphilly.org/ This year, we will screen a new documentary film, "The 5 Powers" about the transnational peace work of Thich Nhat Hanh, Sister Chan Khong, and Alfred Hassler during the Vietnam War. Seehttp://www.the5powersmovie.com/  Discussion with the producers of the film, Anthony Nicotera, Gregory Kennedy-Salemi, and Stuart Jolley, along with Laura Hassler '70, and George Lakey (who worked with Alfred Hassler of the Fellowship of Reconciliation) will follow the screening.  The 5 Powers film is organized around central tenets of Buddhist philosophy and features a captivating mix of comic book style animation, live interviews, archival audio, photos, and documents, some of which were procured from the Peace Collection at Swarthmore.
