Susan Jane Cunningham
Susan Jane Cunningham was born in 1842 in Hartford County, Maryland. In 1869, Cunningham was one of the founders of the mathematics and astronomy departments at Swarthmore College, leading both until she retired in 1906. She planned and equipped Swarthmore’s first observatory. In 1891, Cunningham was one of the first six women to join the New York Mathematical Society, which would later become the American Mathematical Society.
Susan Jane Cunningham died in 1921 at the age of 78.
