My problem with Avatar modern AU
Some of you all know that I’m big fan of writing roleplay on discord in universe created by James Cameron. Mainly in my native language, because my english level isn’t good enough to write a 2000 letter’s of description in short amount of time. So when new server is created, and I got my hand on it I’m always jumping into it. Sadly my main oc of greatest british sniper Stanley Cecil Adams will not be there, you can ask why? Shut up shitling, it was rhetorical! Because of two words on plot channel “modern AU”...
Chapter 1 – what’s is modern AU?
Imagine whole plot of Avatar, but instead of being on green and alive Pandora action takes place on earth in our times, thus the name “modern au”. Yea whole Sully family, etc are taking place in some shit-ville like Hollywood or other, mainly American, town. I think you can see where I’m going with it...
Chapter 2 – Eywa is dead 17 – Pandorian massacre with a long bow.
If we are placing plot of roleplay group in modern times there isn’t any place for magic etc. We don’t talk about modern-fantasy, that’s something else, only thing I know close to it it’s 1 episode of GATE: Thus the JSDF Fought There. Return to the point we need to say, in that kind of world, Eywa is dead. So what’s is “pandorian massacre with a long bow”? It’s the thing that is destroying whole message of Avatar!
Chapter 3 – Your literature teacher is rolling inside it’s coffin
Remember your classes about meaning of books? Like that “The Trail” by Franz Kafka is a metaphor of destruction which is coming on people with bureaucracy? That the crime Josepf K. committed was being alive? Yea the same is with Avatar. Avatar is kind of religious movie, and it’s having message. The money isn’t worth of fighting for, only the things you love are worth killing and get killed for. Putting characters from Pandora is a crime against the lore and meaning of whole series.
Chapter 4 - Let's not blame the lazy because they didn't do anything. Let's blame the ones who screwed up.
There can be great art by making Na’vi into humans, and humans into Na’vi. It was a part of community, and we will not lost it. But people who are using Avatar character to make them live in the modern world is the greatest lazyness which I have seen. You seriously want to say you could come up with your own characters? But copy someone else work? That’s not the same as creating fan fiction, but fan fiction should be still in borders of what can happened in the universe, not changing it by 180 degrees.
