This is how Iori Miyazawa described the development process for Otherside Picnic. The first draft originally had Sorawo as a guy but the story wasn't coming together. Then he happened to see a few episodes of Hannibal and had the lightbulb turn on about same-sex relationship dynamics being compelling enough to carry a serious story. So, being a himedanshi, he decided to go all-in on a long-held desire to write yuri and spent like a year reading josei manga and novels written by women to make sure he understood womens' perspectives on relationships. Then he rewrote the first Otherside Picnic short story with that in mind.
