Apply to a  job, wait (1) day, then call.  Give them your first and last name. Tell them you submitted an application and that you’re very motivated to find [Enter field name] work. Let the conversation lead you wherever it takes. Be very polite. Say” thank you for your time, I’ll be looking forward to hearing back from you.” Rinse, repeat. This is to force them to be looking out for your application. 

 When you get to the interview, shake their hand firmly,  tell them your first and last name.  

Describe your experiences  as “ two years transcription and data entry” if you have a desk job interview and “ [however many years]  costumer service, retail and stock” for your retail jobs.  

Don’t use job “ buzz words” I stg they hear them all day. Say  things like, “ I’m detail oriented and am very good at taking instruction.”  “ I would like to work for a company with integrity and I feel that [ company name] would be a good fit”

When they ask you if you have “reliable transportation” say  YES. don’t tell them what kind of transportation, just say yes. (if you don’t do this, you wont get the job , I’m telling you right now). 

Research the company. Know what they do, why they do it, how OLD the company is. WHERE it was founded, and what kind of position you’re intending to apply for.

When they ask you “ give us a situation where you had to blah blah blah” Make one the fuck up. Make yourself sound good as hell, and like you put your company’s needs slightly above the customer’s needs, but make the customer happy. 

If they ask you about being outgoing, Say you “like to focus on your work so you can concentrate on doing things right” (which buys you out of having to act friendly all the time)

Questions for after the interview:

1.  Does this position offer upward mobility?

2. Do you enjoy working for the company? (if you’re not interviewing for a temp agency who will send you anywhere)

 Then, shake their hand,  Ask them to repeat their name (REMEMBER THIS) say thank you for your time, wish them a nice day and leave. write their name down outside if you have to, just remember the fuck out of it. 

AFTER your interview, send a card directed to the name of the person who interviewed you (I’ll give you them) that says “Thank you for the interview, I appreciate the opportunity. have a great day” This shows  that you have an understanding of professionalism, and will have them thinking of you kindly (or at least remembering you) when they’re shuffling through the choices. 

DO NOT tell them you just moved to the city over the phone.  In person, tell them you just moved to the city. Make it sound like the only reason you need a job is because you moved. Not because you’re desperate.

Flew to Chicago for the weekend then got back home yesterday at 1 am. Studied for my bio exam on the plane and also finished a book during the flight. When I got home I had to finish some homework so I didn’t get to sleep much and had class the whole entire day but surprisingly I didn’t fall asleep in any of my classes because that happens way more than it should rip.

Currently having a lot of fun experimenting with bujo designs, sorry if they turn out messy

It was pretty fun!

I thought I’d update and say I’m still alive and doing things with this snippet of my day, haha.

Me, two other seniors, and four juniors went to the Freshman’s orientation class (a class every freshman interested in the Graphic Design program takes their first semester at my university) and we were a panel for them to talk to and ask questions. Basically, the professor introduces us and then leaves the room so that we can be totally honest with the freshman about the program.

Some advice that came out of it was actually really good and I’ll share what I remember:

There’s no set formula for the process of a design. Embrace the crazy mess that is the process! Enjoy the journey and immerse yourself in it!

Be proud of your work. Don’t be proud of bad work if you know it’s bad, but if you think you did a good job then be proud of it. If you aren’t proud of it then work on it until you are. You will know when you’ve done enough or when you’ve “given up”.

Professors will not hold your hand throughout the classes and critiques forever. At the beginning of your design journey, professors will be nice and may not say what they really think. Since you’re still learning how to think as a designer and the principles they won’t be as harsh. Later on, though they’ll start to let go and let you make your own decisions, and that shift will be uncomfortable and scary, but it’s okay, you’ll get through it and start to really evolve into a designer.

Your classmates may be your future competition, but you all will also grow faster and stronger if you work together. Combine your experiences with each other and learn from one another. Speak up during the critique and help each other out.

There’s no set formula for how to give a critique, either! There’s no “two good things and a wrong thing” about every design. Say what you see and feel about someone else’s design and that should help them get through their project.

If you don’t know what to say, then think about what you would want to know about your own project. If you’re worried about typeface choice, then your classmates might be, too, so comment on their typeface choice. Practice helps when you’re learning how to give feedback.

Know yourself well enough to know if you can make the design happen or not. Push for what you’re passionate about and back off when you know you’re going in the wrong direction. If you don’t like your project and someone says to try a different direction then try that direction, don’t fight back just because you made it this far.
