A scratchy painting of Yona! I'm rereading the comics and omg I just love AnY, the story, the world, the characters are all so wonderful<3
SPOILERS below for Joou no Hana
omg.... I read Joou no Hana. What a tragedy. And that last page? Wtfff that was bone-chilling.
I mean it was definitely the classic killing off love interest one day after they sleep together... because Hakusei couldn't be with Aki when she became the ruler. But how lonely and unhappy she was at the end.
And then... the way, the way the last page just states: "aki ruled for several years. but then one day, she sent out a mysterious message: "find the thousand year flower"... and then six months later, she was assassinated".
Bone-chilling, eerie way to go out. What the hell??
Edit: It seems like it has some alternate endings expanding on that end. Basically the rare flower comes every thousand years and grants a wish. Looks like Aki wanted to reunite with Hakusei, so ends up in another realm on a journey with him (afterlife?)
What you're describing here is the end of the penultimate chapter. There's still an entire chapter that explains how Aki died 6 months after asking for that flower.
The alternative ending is something else entirely and doesn't even need to be read. It's just like 8 pages that give the shippers a happier ending than canon
yeppp...... is that canon? It did make me feel slightly better, admittedly.
Like, what the hell. It's like... like if Yona of the Dawn ended with Hak dying protecting Yona, and then there was a black screen with the caption: "Yona died of starvation six weeks later".
Like goddamn. Dark ending.
Well it was written by the author herself 2 years after Joou no hana's main ending, so I guess you can consider it canon? Personally I don't because it's inconsistent with the rest of the story. Aki forgiving Queen Do, making her the ruler of Ah, going on a journey herself and running into Hakusei who somehow turns out to be still alive? Yeah no. Sounds like a fever dream to me lol.
And yeah it would've been pretty traumatizing if Yona ended that way too, but I always felt that, unlike Yona, Joou no hana had some grim background atmosphere, so I did consider the possibility of it ending that way. Remember how we had such ominous pages at the start of each volume?

Have any Yona of the Dawn fans here read Joou no Hana? Reading it rn… the heroine is interesting.
Her servant/love interest Hakusei also has a similar name to Hak. And trying to become her general.
I did. Aki is such a smart and amazing FL. I just wish Yona was as lucky as her in receiving political education when she was little. That way she could've devised smart plans along the story and been more prepared for the role of a ruler by the end.
Hakusei shares similarities with Hak when it comes to his name and position of bodyguard, but Hak is a still a thousand times more interesting than him as a character imo.

Hak to Su-Won in chapter 243: You didn’t see the Princess’s potential! She had the abilities in her all along! You were stupid enough to not see it! You could have married her and passed down the political power to her and avoided getting people hurt!! That was the best solution! You were selfish!!!
Kusanagi: This is harsh, but if Su-Won had not hypothetically killed Il and married Yona, they would have had a very unhappy marriage. Yona would soon realize Su-Won would never love her romantically. Su-Won would be too busy trying to wage wars and do politics alone, as he had watched Il for a long time and as expected Yona was not raised properly for reliable ruling. Il would be trying to break Yona away from Su-Won and constantly banning Su-Won from war and fighting with him. Things would turn south real quick. People would get hurt. The Su-Won x Yona pairing was impossible from the start.
So, Kusanagi said that there was no solution at all. So Hak was wrong. Hak put a LOT of pressure on Su-Won to solve things or do things differently if he could go back in time, saying that Yona had the potential, and it seems it wasn’t exactly fair. Was Il’s death morally “right”? Maybe not depending on who you talk to. Was the peaceful solution that Hak mentioned possible? According to Kusanagi, no.
That's not exactly what she said though. Kusanagi talked about the emotional aspect of the marriage. She said that Soowon would never be able to return Yona's feelings in the way she wanted, and Yona would be miserable in that respect. Now, whether she would continue lamenting in her corner for the rest of her life, or whether she would try to find a purpose and make herself useful in other ways, that is not mentioned. It is possible that Yona would eventually grow interested in politics. Either as a way to impress Soowon and spend more time with him, or simply to occupy herself. After all, since her romantic and intimate life is nonexistent, she would have to redirect her energy somewhere else. There would be no point to continue training in dancing or kuto for someone who doesn’t value or appreciate it. She'll eventually have to start living for herself.
I'm surprised this thread turned into a Hak hate spiral. Hak never said that Yona was amazing from the start, he just said she had the potential, because she wasn't a selfish brat who only cared about herself. She cared about others and wanted to be a worthy princess.
Her main flaw was that she was ignorant about the situation outside the castle because her father shielded her from it. However, seeing Soowon working constantly and going to war from time to time, she might realise that something's going on and it's not all sunshine and rainbows outside like she thought.
One last thing, Hak never conditioned his friendship to Soowon on him marrying Yona. He conditioned his service to Soowon as his right hand man. That is because Hak already agreed to become Yona's bodyguard long ago, which means she'd always be his top priority. The only way he could realistically serve both at the same time was if Soowon married Yona. I don't think Hak made any outrageous demand, and it's not like he harassed Soowon day and night about it.
Read the fanbook as well, it covers Il's reasons for raising Yona as he did (Spoilers?):
"It's not that he didn't make her study at all, but after losing Kashi, he wanted his only daughter to live without hardship. More than anything, war and bloodshed were Il's trauma and he didn't want his daughter anywhere near that. This contradiction was Il's weakness, where he fell short as a king. I think Su-Won was quietly observing this side of Il as well."
Personal thoughts: Ok... well, yes, he definitely fell short there. Haha.
It's not that he didn't make her study at all
I wish this was expanded upon further. Like, how much knowledge did he let Yona aquire? She's clearly not illiterate, and she clearly knew more than just dancing and playing the kuto, even at the beginning of the story. I remember how she was the one who explained the history of Kouka's ruling during one of the early chapters
So she clearly has knowledge about History too. What about other stuff like politics, military and economy? Maybe she had basic knowledge of them as well. If it had been demonstrated, people wouldn't have joked about "Yona learning politics in 3 days" and such.
Translation of the Q&A in the recent Fanbook
For those who didn't know, a Fanbook was released along with issue 6 of Hana to Yume (the one that contained the first chapter of the Yona Gaiden). It featured several stuff like an interview with Kusanagi, a Q&A based on questions asked by the readers (back in December in think?), sketches that were discarded....etc. I think Projectvinland will eventually translate it but it might take a long time, so I thought of translating the most pertinent questions from the Q&A myself. You can find the raws on reddit or Mercary.
Q1: If Soowon hadn't rebelled, would Yona and Soowon have gotten married?
A1: Soowon likes Yona, but it's not romantic, and Yona would've quickly realised it so even if they got married, they wouldn't have been happy. Soowon is more preoccupied with politics and war than marriage, and Il is completely against war and Yona & Soowon getting married. It seems like marriage would've been impossible after all.
Personal opinion: a lot of fans speculated as such, so I'm glad it got confirmed. Soowon never loved and will never love Yona (in a romantic sense), and she would've been miserable if she married him.
Q3: Why is Hyuri always so silent?
A3: Serving Yu-Hon and Su-Won, and occasionally carrying out assassinations, he has lived his life trying to erase his presence as much as possible. He rarely speaks, so as not to leave impression of his thoughts on those around him. However his murderous intent and aura have been leaking out.
Personal opinion: makes sense.
Q12: Are there any characters that are similar to Kusanagi-sensei?
A12: Every character is a part of me, yet none of them are exactly me, but I share a few traits with Il. When I get angry, I blurt out things that are completely different from what I really want to say, and I turn my back on things I'm not good at. I'm immature.
Personal opinion: quite surprising that she relates to Il the most out of everyone.
Q15: It is said that Negro loved her Highness Kouren dearly, but I'd like to know what her Highness Kouren thought of Negro.
A15: I think she probably held feelings of affection for him that were very close to mutual love.
Personal opinion: why are the love stories of the Xing people always so random lol? I didn't get the feeling that they shared more than a master-servant relationship. Same with Algira and Tao, that's why i was surprised to learn that Algira liked her too.
Q16: Did Soo-won realize that Hak had been in love with Yona for a long time?
A16: Soo-won is oblivious to romance, so he didn't notice...or rather, he didn't pay much attention. He thought they were good friends. Now, he understands that Hak and Yona care deeply about each other.
Personal opinion: there was a theory about how Soowon refused to marry Yona because he realised Hak liked her. It turns out completely wrong. Soowon never knew about it, but in ch268 when he said that putting Hak on the scale was the only way to get Yona without fail, it seems he had already started grasping the depth of their relationship.
Q17: In volume 38, Yona was finally able to ride a horse, which was really cool. Since when has Yona been able to ride a horse?
A17: During her journey with the Happy Hungry bunch, she sometimes practiced with Hak and the others, and after volume 31, when they returned to Hiryuu Castle, it seems she continued to practice on her own before the battle with South Kai (while being watched by several attendants, including Minsu).
Personal opinion: I wish it was shown. It would've avoided many unnecessary complaints at the start of the South Kai arc.
Q20: I'd like to know the reason Soo-won gave Yona the hairpin.
A20: To be blunt... there was no deeper meaning behind it. He put carrying out his plan and loving Yona like a sister in different boxes. He brought the gift as a formality for her birthday, and he didn't expect Yona to be so happy that she would cry about it, so Soo-won was a little surprised at the time. In that sense, there is a big river flowing between Hak, Yona, and Soo-won, and it will be difficult for them to understand each other. I don't think they need to understand everything about each other.
Personal opinion: ok this is very disappointing. I really expected the hairpin to carry a deeper meaning, not that Soowon was in love with Yona, but the answer here is just too basic. After making it the core theme of chapter 125, after framing it as the only thing Hak would never forgive Soowon for, I thought we were building up for a huge revelation, not a simple "it was just a formality". What's more, now that Kusanagi openly "spoiled" the answer, it probably means she doesn't plan on further discussing it in the story. The hairpin will probably never resurface. What was the point of making Lili declare she will retrieve it from Ogi? What a huge plot hole.
Q24: Why did Soo-won decide to take the throne on the night of Yona's birthday?
A24: With a birthday party being held, it wouldn't be difficult for Soo-won's subordinates or unfamiliar people to enter the castle without being noticed, and he targeted a time when the castle residents would be a little relaxed and tipsy. Min-soo also unconsciously leaked information to Keishook about times when the castle was less guarded.
Personal opinion: it makes sense but this is also something i wish was discussed in the main story. I wanted Soowon to explain the planning of the coup, and I wanted Hak or Yona to confront him about how he only saw the "strategic side" of Yona's birthday, how he never thought that she might never be able to celebrate any of her future birthdays because of the trauma his choice would cause her.
Q25: What did Kashi see when she first met Hak and said "Please protect Yona"?
A25: She saw Hak holding Yona's hand and protecting her as they left the castle. She knew that this child would be very important to Yona in the future.
Personal opinion: I'm glad this is all what Kashi saw. Some people claimed she might've realised Hak was the shield or that he was Yona's future lover, but thankfully that was not the case. Their relationship just developed naturally and it's not something Kashi or Il pushed.

Yona🩷
Couldn't decide what to post.
One thing I never liked in this manga is that Yona never actually got to express any real rage towards Su-Won. Hak is allowed to crash out, scream at him, call him names, even attack him. Yona is not.
Let's look at how things went. After the death of Il, Yona is initially frozen, silent, and even afraid of even a single mention of Su-Won. She's like a frightened little rabbit. In the anime, she even tries to run away.
In Awa, she only manages to touch his sword before he immediately assumes her feelings without letting her get any word in. We just a helpless, frozen face as he says goodbye, then her crying, that she actively suppresses.
One thing I notice is that there is never any true rage towards Su-Won Yona feels. Unlike Hak, she was never was even able to actually pull his sword and attempt to kill him. She only felt weakness.
During the Fire Tribe arc, Yona falters when deciding to intervene in the battle with Su-Jin and Su-Won:
The one who has to propel her into action and remind her of her duty to her country is Hak.
During the Water Tribe arc, Yona merely gives Su-Won looks and mumbles of mistrust that he dispels, even then, she never crashes out at him directly. In fact the one she screams at is LILI, not Su-Won.
It's a rare moment of Yona getting angered by Lili's obliviousness. Yet the next moment, she's suppressed her anger into something palatable: "I'm really fine", when she's obviously not.
Yes, Yona is resentful of Su-Won, but she is always left unable to truly crash out at him.
By the time Yona is able to move forward from the cycle and decides to face Su-Won without hatred and fear, she is assertive, daring, and cool-headed.
But the one thing she is never allowed to be towards him is angry.
In the initial castle arc, when Su-Won says that she can move her seat if made uncomfortable, she doesn't respond with anger. But neither does she look at him.
And then, more strikingly later on, when Hak was missing in the flood, at first, Yona doesn't face Su-Won and deflects her true emotions:
However, when Su-Won decides to comfort her all of a sudden, the resentment that we all thought Yona had surpassed came flooding back.
The rage is in her face. She thinks, "STOP. We are NOT friends."
But does she tell him this, despite feeling that? Does she SHOW her enraged expression? No. Instead, she deflects, and shows a weak side to herself. Instead of showing any anger, she starts to cry and confides in him.
This is the problem.
Hak is allowed to show his angry face at Su-Won. He is allowed to scream at him, berate him, tell him that he's acting stupid and unfair and horrible.
But Yona is not.
Finally, let's think about when Yona learns that Su-Won decided to make her queen. She does calls him "selfish".
But when it is time for her to actually face him about this? She never says it. He decides her coronation, calls the shots, while she quietly obeys.
Unlike Hak, Yona appears to be the understanding and accommodating one. The one who sympathizes with Su-Won or tries to look at things from his perspective.
She is the one who looks past his faults and is unable to think the "kind" Su-Won was fake.
And this viewpoint directly clashes with Hak's, who once thought Su-won never cared for them:
Hak wanted to crush the hairpin the moment he saw it after the murder. However, Yona was unhealthily attached to it for a good chunk of the story. And even though she gave it away, she was never able to smash it.
It's an interesting juxtaposition between Yona and Hak's approaches, yes, but also a problematic one.
Let's think about why Yona is like this. It's not that she's a weak-minded woman in the least; after all, she was willing to one-shot Kumji completely out of hatred.
Perhaps, since Yona is the one who has to play politics and be diplomatic, she's suppressing her true emotions. But I think, especially in the earlier stages, there is fear too. Fear that Su-Won will not respond well to her anger. That there will be consequences. And finally, I do believe it is because Yona was too pacifistic and soft on him, because of their past history.
Or maybe it's the fact that men are allowed to be angry and women are not in this manga. Who knows. But I wish they were. Yona was acting like a battered wife with no spine.
And that's the thing: unlike Yona, Lili is actually someone who calls Su-Won on his bullshit and makes it clear that there will be consequences:

The last chapter will also have 42 pages instead of the usual 30 pages, and an extra chapter is to be released on February 20th!
Gorgeous! 😍💛 Yona is gonna be the cover star for the Hana to Yume Issue 2 dropping on 12/19, which is also when the final chapter is out. PLUS, we're getting new info about the series!
________________________________________________________
what's the new info even about? 🤔 My brain is already running wild 😭 maybe it's just the next volume or some sick limited edition merch? But lowkey praying for a whole new anime season or an OAD/OVA! 🙏🏻 Or it could be another stage play/exhibit... Either way, I'm buzzing! 🤩
