The day he failed.
The day the king of curses swore he would be the worst thing the world had ever seen. The day he vowed to destroy any happiness he saw anyone else have.
The day he was broken.
The day he realized no matter what he did at the end of the day he was still a man with a heart. A man with a soulmate. Or at least he was. He looked down at his thigh, expecting the phrase to vanish some time after she did. It was supposed to once your soulmate died, but his never did. Even a hundred years later.
“A reminder of my failure” he thought to himself.
Whatever. What’s another tattoo at this point? Besides. The top of his thigh was a very hidden spot that nobody would see. He would move on he told himself. He was an unstoppable menace to society and he would be fine.
One hundred years would be enough time to move on, but ironically enough, not for Sukuna. No matter how hard he tried he couldn’t. Every wound he’d ever had healed; broken bones, stabs, poison. But not this. He would never show it, but the time only made it worse. It hurt more everyday, until he saw her again.
The same, but different.
He couldn’t believe his eyes at first. No. It can’t be. This must be an illusion. A trap one of his enemies had laid for him. He hesitated, guard raised. But when he uttered the phrase…
“You really want to die, don’t you?”
She responded
“Wasn’t really on the agenda for today…”
It had happened again. Sukuna didn’t know how or why, but he had been giving a second chance. This is why his mark never faded. He didn’t hesitate. He grabbed her and immediately hid her away where no one could touch her. Until of course that backfired on him. It only made his soulmate resent him. She wasn’t a doll he could set on the shelf and admire whenever he wanted. She had a life, a family that mourned her disappearance. Of course one day she snuck free, it was only a matter of time. In order to be the soulmate of the King of Curses she had to be strong willed. But that strong will mixed with stubbornness would be her downfall.
Sukuna had barely walked through the door when he realized she was gone. Fear and anger fought within him, swirling like oil and water refusing to melt together into anything productive. He followed her tracks to no avail. She was gone. It was only when he received a ransom note from would could only be described as the world dumbest sorcerer that he decided rage was the only emotion he needed to fix this.
But it was too late. By the time he had killed everyone in his way the sorcerer had already killed her. Again. He would feel broken again. He prayed this was just a nightmare but to no avail. This was really happening again. But again, the phrase on his thigh did not fade. He scowled at it, damn near thinking about cutting the whole limb off.
The world may not have known a force as cruel as Sukuna, but Sukuna knew a fate crueler than any other.
Over and over and over again. Every hundred years he would find his soulmate, and she would be taken from him no matter what he did to try and hide or protect her from the world. He’d even giving up at looking for her at one point, hoping it would just stop. But the universe wouldn’t stop. Every time they would come across each other by happenstance whether they wanted to or not. Until it suddenly stopped.
Finally, the cycle has been broken. And so he decided to break himself finally, into twenty cursed fingers. Finally able to rest.
Until of course Yuji came along and fucked everything up.

The idea of soulmates was laughable to most jujutsu sorcerers and curses alike. A world of darkness and violence was supposed to lead you to a loving and happy relationship?
Sukuna scoffs at the idea. Another stupid weakness. “It’s like people want to be fodder” he thought to himself.
Until of course his ego realized even the King of Curses is no exception. Why else would he have a phrase tattooed on him, small and hidden on his right thigh amongst all his others. The first word this alleged bonded entity would utter to him.
“Wasn’t really on the agenda for today…”
He’s walking through the woods. He can remember it like it was yesterday even though it was hundreds of years ago. He wasn’t even really expecting to come across anyone this late at night and in this remote of a place, but there you were. Picking moonlight moss off of a tree, adding it to various other herbs you had collected in a basket.
“An apothecary would be the only one out this late” he thought to himself. Regardless, she was in his territory, somewhere she shouldn’t be, taking things that weren’t hers to take. Even if she begged, he wouldn’t spare her. No matter how innocently young and foolish she might be.
There’s no way she hasn’t noticed him at this point. Even facing away from him his presence is overwhelming. People have said they can feel death rolling off of him in waves. A darkness that covers entire villages before he even enters. Now he’s almost insulted. She should’ve been groveling by now. Crying, begging and screaming, anything! But she’s just silently picking her herbs, not even bothered to turn around to face him.
He grinds his teeth for a second before barking out a phrase he had said a million times before,
“You really want to die, don’t you?”
She stops just for a second, but she doesn’t turn to face him. She goes back to picking her herbs and calmly replies,
“Wasn’t really on the agenda for today…”
Both of them freeze. Neither of them take a breath. Then as if on cue, Sukena’s eyes widen.
“You…It’s supposed to be…YOU?! Some random human female? Without an ounce of cursed energy!” He’s yelling and asking at the same time. Now he can’t kill her. His wanted to, but the desire to vanishes. He’s looking at her in displeasure and disbelief.
Now she finally turns to face him. She’s in pure shock herself. The King of Curses just uttered the phrase that appeared in her left forearm on her 18th birthday. Her. An apothecary’s apprentice from a small village no one would ever remember the name of. A commoner, a nobody.
A human.
There was a lot of kicking and yelling when Sukuna grabbed her and threw her over his shoulder, two of his arms keeping her secure. Neither of them really liked this from the get go, but Sukuna seemed to be the only one who realized how much danger she was now in. How he had to remedy this situation fast. Sukuna’s list of enemies was almost as long as the list of people he’s killed. If word of a soulmate got out there’s no telling the lengths his enemies would go through to get to her.
Sukuna has dumped a lot of work in front of Uraume before, but when he entered the door and physically through down the Apothecary in front of them, that was a new one. “Keep her safe” was all he said before leaving again. Uraume and the Apothecary stared at each other for a few solid moments before they both signed; an unspoken mutual agreement that this was going to happen whether they liked it or not.
It took a lot of time and work, but the soulmates did eventually bond. The Apothecary was never afraid of him. Calm, collected, intelligent and sassy; never afraid to speak her mind. Bratty, but still respectful of who exactly she was mouthing off too. Sukuna hated it at first, but deep down he did enjoy it. While there were rumors about him liking meek, submissive harem girls, Sukuna felt pride in having a strong mate. And when she got on the tips of her toes to try and get in his face during an argument? He was instantly turned on. Deep down he did listen to her when they fought, and hell there were even times where he knew she was right and he was wrong. Would he ever admit it out loud? No. But he didn’t need to. She knew she’d won the argument when he grabbed her and seated her on his lap. The mouth on his stomach doing all the silent apologizing he needed.
For years they made it work, until one day even the King of Curses was caught in an ambush he didn’t see coming. The Apothecary knew of his ruthless nature, his love to draw out battles so he could enjoy the bloodshed just a little longer. But what she didn’t know is that is ego would be the death of her. While he was decimating the wave of enemies before him, he failed to notice the one sorcerer who was able to sneak up behind her. Just a weak cry,
“K-kuna…”
Gone.
He played that night over and over again in his mind. He was the worst he’d ever been since then. More ruthless than anyone thought possible. Not just because he lost his soulmate, but because the tattoo never went away. Reminding him every day of his failure….until…..
