Resources For Writing Deaf, Mute, or Blind Characters
Despite the fact that I am not deaf, mute, or blind myself, one of the most common questions I receive is how to portray characters with these disabilities in fiction.
As such, I’ve compiled the resources I’ve accumulated (from real life deaf, mute, or blind people) into a handy masterlist.
Deaf Characters:
Deaf characters masterpost
Deaf dialogue thread
Dialogue with signing characters (also applies to mute characters.)
A deaf author’s advice on deaf characters

The youtube channel of the wonderful Tommy Edison, a man blind from birth with great insight into the depiction of blind people and their lives.
An Absolute Write thread on the depiction of blind characters, with lots of different viewpoints and some great tips.
And finally, this short, handy masterpost of resources for writing blind characters.
Characters Who Are Blind in One Eye

2023.08 ~ Top 10 longest fics posted on AO3
1. Good Intentions by Gloworm13 [E, 382k]
►Harry never expected a conversation over returning Draco’s wand. […] Harry can’t cope, especially when his group of peers is sent back to Hogwarts to finish their interrupted Seventh Year. And Draco Malfoy is wholly unprepared for facing the love of his life every fucking day now that he knows.
2. About Everything We Fucked Up and Tried to Fix by @zoooooey0610 [E, 246k]
►The time is the Dark Middle Ages, even with Voldemort defeated, the Wizarding world is still a place where Omegas are seen as properties. Couldn’t sleep, Harry came across ‘The Slytherin Wall of Sluts’ that changed the rest of his life, but the cog wheel of destiny may have started to move long before that. Twelve years later, he was confronted with the presents of destiny, and struggled to deal with the mess. However, every step he took seemed to be another mistake.
3. Cut From the Sky by @mallstars [E, 150k]
►“I’m stuck in a time loop, reliving November 2nd. This is the 111th time I’ve lived through today.” Draco stilled. His moody eyes, the tension in his hands where he gripped onto his umbrella, the careful mask of blankness flickering over his face — everything about him was so difficult and so very dear to Harry. “Ah,” said Draco, “and?”
4. After the Rain Falls by @shinigami714 [E, 95k]
►After the events of the war, all Harry wants to do is forget. For everything to return to normal. But things never were normal for him, and the war left many marks on him not so easily forgotten. When he receives a surprising offer to return to Hogwarts in a continuing education program, Harry jumps at the chance, and despite his best efforts to deal with his problems alone, discovers along the way that quite often, two minds are greater than one.
5. guard dog by chrismare [?, 63k]
►The first thing Draco ever loved was the Manor. Not the house- it was too big, too quiet, too cold- but the grounds that surrounded it. He grew up on stinging soles, running barefoot through his own little world. One of the house elves had cleaned the tiny cuts on his feet once and told him that he’d get used to it, that he’d grow calluses and it would stop hurting. It never really did.
6. Dating Draco Malfoy by @queenofthyme [M, 60k]
►Draco Malfoy is dating his way through Harry Potter’s endless pool of ex-boyfriends. With the help of Harry’s expert dating advice, he just might find exactly who he’s looking for…
7. Snogging Lessons by Revolocard [T, 58k]
►Harry Potter thought the hardest part about being the Chosen One would be preparing to fight Voldemort. He didn’t expect it might actually be missing out on all the normal teenaged stuff. Now in sixth year, Harry feels like an outsider, too worried about being the subject of another Witch Weekly article to try to take part. When he and Draco Malfoy land in a semester’s worth of detention, Draco is delighted and horrified to discover the Boy Who Lived is not only a virgin, he doesn’t even know how to snog. Secret snogging lessons. It’s not like it’s anything more than just catching Harry up a bit. What could go wrong?
8. That Marriage Contract by Umeko [E, 54k]
►What happens when the forced marriage and male pregnancy trope combine to spring a surprise on the Boy Who Lived and his arch-rival turned unwitting fiancé? And they all have two dearly departed grandfathers to thank for the mess.
9. Terrible People by @wolfpants [E, 52k] — ART by @getawayfox
►What happens when Harry and Draco end up on the same Muggle gay cruise? They certainly didn’t plan for it to happen (but their friends might have). They’re stuck with each other for a week, they might as well make the most of it, right? Featuring a holiday-long game of Truth or Dare, a very ill-judged FWB proposition, decades-long pining, lots of gin, and a small pair of green swimming trunks.
10. and i ignite by ihowlforyou [M, 51k]
►Draco Malfoy loves attention - and the Muggle world has given it to him in spades. Through a surprising and humbling series of events, Draco has achieved tremendous success in the music industry. He has recouped his fortune, earned legions of adoring fans, and gets loads of attention. Over the years, it has still never been quite enough… Until the subject of his more sizzling songs abruptly barges back into his life, demanding answers.

Is A03 down? I keep getting this
So... I found this and now it keeps coming to mind. You hear about "life-changing writing advice" all the time and usually its really not—but honestly this is it man.
I'm going to try it.
I love the lawyer metaphor, because whenever I see “John knew that...” in prose writing I immediately think “how? How does he know it?” Interrogate your witnesses. Cross-examine them. Make them explain their reasoning. It pays dividends.
All of this, but also feels/felt. My editor has forbidden me from using those and it’s forced me to stretch my skills.
[Link to the article for screen-readers]
[ID: The full text of an article. It reads:
"Writing Advice": by Charles Palahniuk- In six seconds, you’ll hate me.
But in six months, you’ll be a better writer.
From this point forward – at least for the next half year – you may not use “thought” verbs. These include: Thinks, Knows, Understands, Realizes, Believes, Wants, Remembers, Imagines, Desires, and a hundred others you love to use.
The list should also include: Loves and Hates.
And it should include: Is and Has, but we’ll get to those, later.
Until some time around Christmas, you can’t write: Kenny wondered if Monica didn’t like him going out at night…”
Thinking is abstract. Knowing and believing are intangible. Your story will always be stronger if you just show the physical actions and details of your characters and allow your reader to do the thinking and knowing. And loving and hating.
Instead, you’ll have to Un-pack that to something like: “The mornings after Kenny had stayed out, beyond the last bus, until he’d had to bum a ride or pay for a cab and got home to find Monica faking sleep, faking because she never slept that quiet, those mornings, she’d only put her own cup of coffee in the microwave. Never his.”
Instead of characters knowing anything, you must now present the details that allow the reader to know them. Instead of a character wanting something, you must now describe the thing so that the reader wants it.
Instead of saying: “Adam knew Gwen liked him.”
You’ll have to say: “Between classes, Gwen was always leaned on his locker when he’d go to open it. She’d roll her eyes and shove off with one foot, leaving a black-heel mark on the painted metal, but she also left the smell of her perfume. The combination lock would still be warm from her ass. And the next break, Gwen would be leaned there, again.”
In short, no more short-cuts. Only specific sensory detail: action, smell, taste, sound, and feeling.
Typically, writers use these “thought” verbs at the beginning of a paragraph (In this form, you can call them “Thesis Statements” and I’ll rail against those, later) In a way, they state the intention of the paragraph. And what follows, illustrates them.
For example:
“Brenda knew she’d never make the deadline. Traffic was backed up from the bridge, past the first eight or nine exits. Her cell phone battery was dead. At home, the dogs would need to go out, or there would be a mess to clean up. Plus, she’d promised to water the plants for her neighbor…”
Do you see how the opening “thesis statement” steals the thunder of what follows? Don’t do it.
If nothing else, cut the opening sentence and place it after all the others. Better yet, transplant it and change it to: Brenda would never make the deadline.
Thinking is abstract. Knowing and believing are intangible. Your story will always be stronger if you just show the physical actions and details of your characters and allow your reader to do the thinking and knowing. And loving and hating.
Don’t tell your reader: “Lisa hated Tom.”
Instead, make your case like a lawyer in court, detail by detail. Present each piece of evidence. For example:
“During role call, in the breath after the teacher said Tom’s name, in that moment before he could answer, right then, Lisa would whisper-shout: ‘Butt Wipe,” just as Tom was saying, ‘Here’.”
One of the most-common mistakes that beginning writers make is leaving their characters alone. Writing, you may be alone. Reading, your audience may be alone. But your character should spend very, very little time alone. Because a solitary character starts thinking or worrying or wondering.
For example: Waiting for the bus, Mark started to worry about how long the trip would take..”
A better break-down might be: “The schedule said the bus would come by at noon, but Mark’s watch said it was already 11:57. You could see all the way down the road, as far as the Mall, and not see a bus. No doubt, the driver was parked at the turn-around, the far end of the line, taking a nap. The driver was kicked back, asleep, and Mark was going to be late. Or worse, the driver was drinking, and he’d pull up drunk and charge Mark seventy-five cents for death in a fiery traffic accident…”
A character alone must lapse into fantasy or memory, but even then you can’t use “thought” verbs or any of their abstract relatives.
Oh, and you can just forget about using the verbs forget and remember.
No more transitions such as: “Wanda remember how Nelson used to brush her hair.”
Instead: “Back in their sophomore year, Nelson used to brush her hair with smooth, long strokes of his hand.”
Again, Un-pack. Don’t take short-cuts.
Better yet, get your character with another character, fast. Get them together and get the action started. Let their actions and words show their thoughts. You -- stay out of their heads.
And while you’re avoiding “thought” verbs, be very wary about using the bland verbs “is” and “have.”
One of the most-common mistakes that beginning writers make is leaving their characters alone.
For example:
“Ann’s eyes are blue.”
“Ann has blue eyes.”
Versus:
“Ann coughed and waved one hand past her face, clearing the cigarette smoke from her eyes, blue eyes, before she smiled…”
Instead of bland “is” and “has” statements, try burying your details of what a character has or is, in actions or gestures. At its most basic, this is showing your story instead of telling it.
And forever after, once you’ve learned to Un-pack your characters, you’ll hate the lazy writer who settles for: “Jim sat beside the telephone, wondering why Amanda didn’t call.”
Please. For now, hate me all you want, but don’t use “thought” verbs. After Christmas, go crazy, but I’d bet money you won’t. End ID]
#this is decent advice#the trick is to know when to use a complex sentence vs a boring sentence#in my opinion#if you’re using the style suggested#it can have HUGE benefit to then drop in a ‘mc sat by the phone and wondered why she didn’t call’#bc now you are establishing that bro my guy#she hates you#and the character doesn’t have the awareness to know it#I also feel strongly about giving the reader a break#sometimes this style gets heavy#I don’t agree with the is has thing tho#like it’s more important to find new ways to use them#by which I mean!#go for things like ‘Duo is TV Static’ or ‘Duo has ants where his blood should be”’
^that
I also want to say that...this is really good advice *for editing*, until this sort of thing becomes second nature, if it ever does. If you get stuck pulling a "but I can't just say 'he felt awful'" and it means you're not getting words down, toss this rule out and write "he felt awful". You can edit it later, if it turns out to need it. Sometimes those short little sentences work, as @amberlyinviolet points out in the tags above.
Different Ways to Describe Brown Eyes
-> feel free to edit and adjust pronouns as you see fit.
Her eyes were the color of honey, irises swirling like the sweet nectar.
His eyes—the color of an intoxicating champagne—beckoned her over with nothing more than a wink and a smile.
They had eyes like mud, perfectly matched with the frown that permanently stained their face.
Her eyes were as bright as the raging sun and the color of dancing flames.
They wore blue eyeshadow to contrast their dark brown eyes.
Her eyes were as beautiful as the leaves of trees in autumn.
His eyes were nearly black, like a void that held a lifetime of secrets.
Dirt. She had eyes like dirt. They were almost as dirty as her personality.
Their eyes reminded her of old brick libraries and vintage books.
She had the kind of eyes that made thieves wonder why they bothered to steal pieces of art.
His eyes made her think of the sandcastles she used to build as a kid.
Their eyes were the same color as the old oak tree their great-great-grandfather planted in the backyard.
His eyes were the same color as the bottle of liquor in his hand.
They had a smile like spring, but their eyes were autumn with a hint of passing summer.
Her dark eyes were flaked with gold.
His brown eyes had tragedy weaved behind his irises.
Brown, copper eyes that paired with the dry blood stuck to their face watched him as he stalked across the tiled floor.

In Case Anyone Is Interested, A Sequel of Miss Never Been Kissed is On the Way.
It's been two years since Bonnie and Kai kissed on that path in the forest and to say that she's still pining may be the understatement of the century. Even after spending most of the year with over three thousand miles and a three hour difference separating them, Bonnie and Kai have still remained best friends and in her case at least, absence has only made the heart grow fonder. Now, everyone is back in Mystic Falls for the summer after their freshman year of college. And while Bonnie isn't as far behind as she was in junior year, there are still some things were she's woefully inexperienced.
(A preview: The girls have a chat by the pool)
“Did he at least make you come?”
“Not really?” Bonnie mutters.
Caroline's mouth drops open and she stops kicking her feet. “Not even once?”
“Nope. But I can’t really blame that on Jeremey.”
“You definitely can.”
“Maybe if I’d ever had one before him, but I haven’t.”
“Haven’t had what?”
“You know.” They stare at her blankly and she rolls her eyes, cheeks already growing hot. Why does she have to have the two nosiest girl friends on the planet? “An orgasm,” she mutters, determined not to repeat it again. Judging by the loud silence that stretches on far too long after her confession, they heard her just fine.
“You’ve never had an orgasm?” Aaliyah looks shocked. Bonnie shakes her head. “Not even by yourself?”
I Know It's Been A While But I FINALLY Finished That Season One, Three Episode Arc rewrite
And it's here. Sorry that it took so long!
For those asking about Action that is on the agenda. To be honest, I never plan to fully abandon that fic, but it's just going to be the one that takes the longest to complete because I have a lot of ideas and between you and me, I want to rewrite it completely. I want to ground it more in reality, do my research, change the penthouse up. But I don't know how that would be received. Will you hate it, love it? I would love feedback.
And lastly, please give me more BonKai fics to read! I'm back in the fandom and I need more! Lol. Give me your fave recs, old or new.
Alright! Bye.
I Can Already Tell This Fic is Going To Killlllll Me.
None of This is Okay by rogerthatmarshall
"Bonnie makes him nervous, and desperate, and sick, and something within him aches at the thought of her. He just can’t think straight, he can't think at all; all he can do is feel. And although he wasn't totally emotionless before the merge, his feelings didn't sway so widely in unfamiliar directions.
Anger, fury, revenge, depression. Those were the feelings that motivated him in every single thing that he did for so long. But now…
He enters the house quietly. She's still in her room; he can hear her moving around and the soft scent of her soap wafts down the stairs and he wants. Wanting is what motivates him, needing her near has been his purpose since he stepped foot back into the real world. "
