the amount of leftists who uncritically support the DSM-5—wielding it online in battles against random individuals who might be “faking” a disorder—boggles my fucking mind. you guys realize that the DSM-5 isn’t the only diagnostic manual on the planet, right? you realize that we place it at the top of the global hierarchy because it’s american, right? has it occurred to you that the APA shouldn’t have so much authority over what counts as a “real” mental illness? has it occurred to you that perhaps there are other diagnostic manuals? in fact, there are dimensional models that don’t rely on sorting individuals into “disorder/no disorder” boxes in the first place. food for thought, lmao

it will never fail to baffle me when americans talk about their war veterans and expect sympathy. it's a very specific and inexplicable state of mind. when i try to imagine how they think, as people wholly devoted to a bloodthirsty empire and see everything that it does as essential and justified, i would imagine they might attempt to either whitewash their crimes to make their empire seem better, or not care at all to appeal to their empire's victims in the first place. and many do those two things. but there's a bewilderingly common third stance people take where they're like "yes we did those horrible things. but surely you must imagine how deeply painful and taxing it was to do those horrible things!" and they fully expect you to swallow it like it is the most natural emotion to respond with and not a hundred layers of chauvinism removed from any trace of humanity. and if you don't sympathize they are genuinely taken aback and they don't understand how you don't appreciate the terrible toll of having to be the one to make these vital decisions! they truly think SOMEONE's gotta torture and murder these civilians, and their poor grandpa made the noble sacrifice to be the one to make this painful decision, so regular people can sleep at night! don't you FEEL for him? and they wholeheartedly believe this.
