librarian agott who was burdened by her expectations and coco of her brimhat duties. coco, who one day met agott while sneaking in the tower of tomes, both of them realising and finding solace in each other where they're truly just themselves, stripped from their roles as librarians and brimhats...

coco who loves agott's magic more than anything even when the others don't. coco who wishes nothing but to protect the one thing she treasures, so when she finds agott crying, surrounded by her magic that's ruined and torn apart, decided there's no point for a place that holds it no regard...

coco who tries to bring agott with her, but gets rejected (she knows, she knows it won't work) and agott, who realises the true nature of brimhats, looks at coco the same way witches do: in fear, rage and disappointment... coco, who never appears before agott after that until years later...

like. For a brushbug to be a vertebrate it must have a spine made of bone (taxonomical necessity) and that spine made of bone due to how we observe the brushbug moving Must continue into its tail. We can section this theoretical spine into cervical/body/coccycal segments and, supposing that the brushbug has the standard amount of vertebrae for a mammal, that constrains it to around twenty vertebrae in the tail. It is extraordinarily rare for an animal to create new bones as it ages (colloquially ‘forming bone where it hasn’t been’ is called ‘cancer’ ) but, if a brushbug has the same amount of vertebrae in its tail through its life, AND its tail lengthens as it ages, then a brushbug tail will also become less flexible as it ages. Which does not appear to be the case. Therefore to be a vertebrate, the brushbug must be:

lengthening its fucking spinal cord???

both of which. are insane.

Also, if we assume a brushbug possesses of itself a lifespan, then a brushbug must have a limit to how long it can grow simply based upon 1. Growth rate and 2. Time. However. If a brushbug has no definite lifespan (like a crustacean) and is simply constrained by how many bones its tail can grow/ how long it can get before it is impractical. Then that’s also a non-mammal behavior.

also, despite coming from an especially wet and humid region, Coco takes it everywhere, and it does not appear to struggle to breathe in any environment where Coco can also breathe. From this we must also assume: the bug does not have external gills. We may have a land snail situation with the breathing.

See here’s the thing actually. Follicular hair the way humans and cats have is actually one of the traits exclusive to mammals. It has evolved Once and Only Once in the last common ancestor of all mammals (fun fact whales and dolphins also have hair). What bees (and crabs) have is something distinct from true hairs. It’s a part of their exoskeleton.
