I am glad that in 2026 I find out about twitter from tumblr.

I did not "dance around" the manic pixie dream girl. I sought to write books exposing the dangerous lie that a person is more than a person. The romanticization (mostly by boys) of the Romantic Other is extremely dangerous, and that was a central theme of my first two books. If people read them as MPDG books, then I failed at my first and most fundamental task and I'm sorry.

Now this isn’t to say that I think he’d join the Pointed Caps or even want to do that; I don’t think he would, for many reasons, but in large part because he saw firsthand that not a single pointed cap witch went to help the Muckpool during the evacuation.

I do think it’s significant that Dagda asked Luluci to take Custas as an apprentice, but I think Luluci would have to meet Custas where he’s at and not the other way around. She’d have to prove to him that she’s an adult he can trust and not just a blind servant to the Pact/principles. And Luluci has a far way to go before she’s gonna be able to be that trusted adult for him (and tbh, Alaira is currently better primed for that than Lu, but Luluci has been entwined with Dagda and Custas’s story since her very introduction at Staircase River, with her wrapping Custas’s legs, Dagda demanding she heal him, and her stating she’s unable to, so I don’t think she’s done being a part of Custas’s story).

But I also don’t think Custas is gonna be able to trust the BrimCaps. After all, they knew what could happen with the Silverwood seed and didn’t tell him. Custas was furious with his friends and the Pointed Caps for lying, so why would he suddenly be okay with the BrimCaps also lying to him, and lying to him in a way that contributed to Dagda dying?

Ininia also lowly implies that they had no intention of Dagda surviving, by saying that the seed should’ve never sprouted inside him—and she never explained to Custas about why he kept needing to apply the Replication spell, causing him to grow more and more desperate and anxious and angry until he was perfectly primed to manipulate. ‘Cause the only way two reputable Pointed Cap youths would agree to try and get an audience with the king instead of running straight to the adults is if they were also trying to protect someone they care about—Custas—from the Knights Moralis. Custas was Ininia and Restys’s bartering chip and he didn’t even know it.

I really think that, even though they’re with the BrimCaps, Custas & Tartah are gonna be their own thing, a more intermediary type of witch. Especially since Tartah clearly wants to become some type of witch doctor. And now Tartah is literally gonna be the only person Custas can trust wholeheartedly because Tartah literally and intentionally made it so he can’t lie at all, to anyone.
