I really think we should stop saying "kid-friendly" and start saying "ad-friendly". We shouldn't indulge these companies and their excuses anymore. I also think that continuing to pretend that this is about "protecting the children" pushes a lot of the blame onto kids and teens, who don't have the political power to push through any of this censorship legislature. Corporations and governments are to blame.

it’s frustrating when you’re talking about an inherently oppressive institution that dehumanizes everyone who is subjected to it and someone is like “it’s especially bad for those it is incorrectly applied to!” as though being the intended victim of an injustice makes it less of a tragedy

been thinking about this lately after some discussions about historical marriage where people have chimed in about how extra awful it would have been for trans men forced into The Wife Role because of dysphoria. which like. yeah. but the thing about The Wife Role in the context of not having civil rights and being the property of a husband is that it is inherently dysphoria-inducing to anyone who identifies as a human being instead of an object.

like a giant comic book bird cage or like a 19th century tiger? aesthetically I think cages are a bit tacky and would prefer an oubliette or some sort of dungeon. there was a shitty cartoon movie I watched as a kid called the swan princess (and the sequel!) where the characters periodically got imprisoned in this weird oubliette… tower… thing… that was filled with deep water. they had to tread water nonstop to keep from drowning and the only respite was a chain with a big ring at the bottom that they could hold onto to rest. this freaked me out a lot but none of them ever really seemed that concerned about it. anyway I think that would be much more effective imagery to evoke for maximum psychological distress. to me personally. it was very g rated but my imagination is very strong.
