Youth Power Summit

What began as a grassroots effort to pursue justice, Million Hoodies Movement for Justice, is a national organization established in response to the tragic murder of Trayvon Martin in March 2012. With over 50,000 members across the globe, Million Hoodies works to protect and empower young people of color from racial profiling and senseless gun violence through creative technology and counter marketing. 

Our organization seeks to build a safer and more racially tolerant America by transforming the public narrative on gun violence and racial profiling while providing the tools necessary for communities to protect themselves.

This summer kicks off the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer Project, a grassroots movement from our civil rights history led by youth of color to end the system of segregation in the South. To commemorate the anniversary of Freedom Summer, Million Hoodies is proud to host Power Summit in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 13 & 14.

Power Summit is a two-day Freedom School for local college students to strategize and design action plans to address gun violence and criminal justice issues in their communities.  #MHPowerSummit

Our goal is to provide the next generation of local civil rights activists with the skills, tools, and networks to design campaigns for transformative change in their communities. Our vision is to form a tri-state network of student organizers, activists, and leaders to confront the gun violence and racial profiling crisis affecting communities of color today. 

Registration costs $25 on a first-come, first-serve basis. The summit is organized into two tracks: criminalization and gun violence prevention (read the programming tab for more details). Students may select which track they'd like to participate in on the registration form. Limited stipends are available.

About Million Hoodies

Million Hoodies successfully generated global support for the arrest of George Zimmerman by collecting over 2 million petition signatures on Change.org, which became the fastest growing petition in the history of the Internet. In 2012, Million Hoodies created a new tool to help track and document incidents of police misconduct and institutional discrimination. Million Hoodies has since collected over 2,000 incidents of misconduct in New York City alone.

Our work recognizes that the conditions that caused the death of Trayvon Martin and many others like him are deeply embedded in institutional injustice and structural violence. While accountability in individual cases is important, we realize that we must attack the core inequalities in our society if we are to put a stop to the senseless deaths and systemic violence inflicted on people of color every day.
