Any tips on drawing the senshi? Like how do you manage to draw them in a simplistic style while keeping core designs?

I do have some tips!

In fact I can walk you through some of my notes and design insights I lean back on when I'm looking to stylize or break down these characters for super simple doodles.

Before I start I wanna say: this is my personal approach for the way I draw and stylize these characters. You do NOT have to follow my approach, this is not meant for you to memorize to a tea. I'm just going through my process to show how I apply certain principles to give characters different features. For example, I associate Makoto heavily with round and square shapes, if you don't like that or think something like triangles and squares would work better, go for it! This post is headcanon heavy! :)

I'll say for the girls' designs there's 2 main things you wanna look for to differentiate them from one another and give them extra quirks/personality: eyes and hair!

(counting you're not doing colored illustrations for the sake of this argument given how that is a whole 'nother major thing)

The girls DO have canonically different eye shapes, even if they tend to be somewhat inconsistent across animation directors (Ami and Rei are the most prominent and easy to spot).

You can look at the canon designs and break down the shapes to exaggerate or stylize certain features. Shapes are the fundamental of character design, so remember:

Circles are associated with friendly, harmless and innocent characters

Triangles are associated with dangerous, angry and dynamic characters

Squares are associated with stable, strong and reliable characters

Let's talk about eyes!

I'm not going to talk about all the characters equally. Characters I don't go as in depth in are ones I'm still figuring things out for, keep this in mind throughout the whole post. I'm still playing and experimenting with most of these.

Also the eyes shapes down below were for another project, I did not make these for this post, so that's why some things are off.

(Like why some have wrinkles, or why Haruka is not there or even why Venus has a different eye shape than the one above, it's all for the sake of lore reasons for the project. But I still felt it was good at illustrating my point so I added it)

You might ask yourself: what do more realistic/complex eyes got to do with a post asking about drawing the senshi in a simplistic style?

Well, if you see the shape and understand the main focus of what you're going for with the character, you can apply that same logic to both the realistic AND the simple drawings.

For example: Rei, is often very irritated. Her eye shape is more triangular, naturally reading as more "aggressive" or "fierce" by default, you can use that principle and apply it to super simple doodles. I like drawing her often with tighter "pissed off" eyes and dots for irises, keeps the idea, but makes it MUCH easier to draw on a whim.

Another example: Mako! She's generally a very laid back character. If you're doing a simple doodle, drooping cartoony closed eyes fit her well! It's VERY easy to draw but it still conveys her chiller attitude in most situations, she's not worrying about much at the moment, she's happy but she's not jumping or grinning like Usagi or Minako. (idk if this makes sense but hopefully it does at least a lil bit)

As I wrote in the post, if you like the Ami with glasses hc I HIGHLY recommend drawing her with glasses. It's a GREAT cheat for having her simple design instantly pop out, like "Oh, round glasses! That's Ami!" (you also don't have to worry about drawing her eyes if you don't want to or want to keep the doodle simple. Win/Win!) Also I recommend keeping her glasses fully round, but up to you. I find it much easier to draw and again, it goes back to the shape thing.

Let's talk about hair!

Goes back to the shape idea: Ami, circles; Rei, triangles.

And again, don't stick exactly with what I do, a lot of stuff I do goes against of what is presented in the show. Ami in the show is most often not drawn with a 'cowlick', I like adding it because it makes her hair a bit messier and fluffier. Contrasting her with Rei's very slick style, but not making it as messy as Usagi. Little additions like that do a lot for conveying hair texture, the character's grooming habits, etc..

Fun fact about Usagi's bangs: the right bang is ALWAYS shorter than the left one in the 90's anime. I'm not kidding, someone made a full thread about it and once you see it you CAN'T unsee it.

This is where I go back, again, to the "you don't need to copy what I do" thing cause I draw Minako with curly hair. She has straight hair in the show, I just took that idea of Minako having hair that is not as straight as say Rei or Setsuna's and pushed it to make her more unique fo my design.

Also another thing about Mina, but you can use her bow to accentuate emotion in doodles and simple art! Is she excited? Have her bow perk up! Is she sad? Have it lightly sag! It's good for readability and effect.

Don't forget Mako's side bangs those are super important and, not as important, but Makoto's bangs on her forehead are not in the same pattern as Ami and Usagi's! Theirs all curve towards the center, while Makoto's all curve towards her ear (if in a 3/4 angle, if front usually it's towards the right).

Hotaru's is definitely the design I pushed the most, but I'm really happy with it. I'm not the first one to draw her this way! I've seen at least a couple artists draw her with this type of stylized vibe and I loved it!

My drawing of Haruka is flipped for the sake of fitting it into the page, that's why the parting is on the left and not the right.

The reason I like Michiru's hair to cut off at one length is because it is an intentional design for her as the Sailor Neptune and it's brilliant! Having her hair shorter and having that sort of cut-off is meant to make it look like an ocean wave when it's flowing in the wind! You can really see it well in this gif, this effect would not be possible if her hair was scaled. (also it makes her hair look different that Makoto's, i's much cooler this way imo)

Last note since some character do have similar-ish hair. This is how I work around it! For me it's just natural at this point but I've also been drawing the girls for like.. 6 years if not more so I'm used to spotting some differences.

This stuff all seems minor, but especially for a cast that doesn't have much in terms of body diversity, stuff like this is CRUCIAL for allowing yourself and others to tell them apart even when stripped to their most basic elements. It's just up to you to choose those elements, the ones that stick out to you the most and work best for each of the girls' personalities. (it's the same principle that allows you to see Mickey Mouse the character just by having two round black circles on top of a half circle. Very simplified explanation but that's what it is)

If you've ever seen AI images of the senshi and wondered "uh.. why does this look off?" even when they're 'relatively accurate' to the show, this is why. They don't get the bangs right, they don't get the eye shape right, they mix those elements amongst the whole cast and throw out an amalgamated garbage because it is unable to tell what small elements actually allow them to be distinguishable from one another.

˙⋆✮ Treating every disagreement like it might be the end of everything

˙⋆✮ The specific way they learned to make themselves smaller in a room

˙⋆✮ Being deeply uncomfortable when someone is genuinely kind with no catch

˙⋆✮ Watching other families interact and feeling something unnamed and heavy

˙⋆✮ Hyper-independence that looks like strength but is really just old fear

˙⋆✮ Needing to know the plan because uncertainty was never safe growing up

˙⋆✮ The way they parent themselves now using words no one ever said to them then

˙⋆✮ Finding comfort in routines because chaos was what home felt like

˙⋆✮ Trusting actions completely and words almost not at all

˙⋆✮ The anger that surfaces when someone else is treated the way they once were

˙⋆✮ Learning to read a room before entering it as a survival skill turned habit

˙⋆✮ The relationship they have with food, money, or safety that reveals everything

˙⋆✮ Becoming fiercely protective of others in the exact way no one was for them

˙⋆✮ The dream they still have sometimes that takes place in that old house

Sailor Moon and Hope

I recommend at least skimming through the comic before reading this, I will skip some things, but it's not necessary. It's on page 2/3. Also again, pls be mindful, it is on a hent site, there are plenty of *those* advertisements plastered all over. Get an adblock or just don't click on it if you dont wanna see that.

First of all, this panel. This is ART.

The fucking height difference between Seiya and Haruka is killing me, Seiya looks like she's trying so hard to mimic Haruka's innate cool aura.

MIchiru IS SO FUCKING DELIGHTED.

Usagi is overdosing on happiness by having all her friends together and is absolutely oblivious to all the different dynamics going on.

Rei, Mina and Mako are all on different ranges in the spectrum of "wth is even happening here?!"

Yaten is just way too happy to see Luna and she gives 0 fucks about everyone else, truly a real people hater who goes to the dogs and cats at parties cause everyone else fucking sucks.

Luna is happy to see Yaten and Artemis is freaking out lol.

Ami and Taiki want to kill each other.

They all go hide from the reporters like in the anime and omg:

Rei is with Yaten and of course, Rei being Rei is super extremely determined to make her (him technically srry, I have a habit of referring to the starlights as she/her even when they're civilians) her husband, but she comes on WAY too strong.

I like to imagine the first Rei panel is just how she imagines herself looking and in the meantime she's being the biggest loser ever lol and Yaten just wants to gtfo.

The little Rei freaking out.. I can't.

She forces Yaten to sign something for her but she doesn't have a paper with her, so we see in a later page that she just made her sign the fucking BATHTUB COVER! Remember, this is the Tsukino house BTW!! Not hers!

I AM ALL IN FOR THE AMI-TAIKI HATE BONER. Like, why didn't we get this Ami in Stars?! The passive aggressiveness?? Hello? YES PLEASE!

Taiki is like "who tf goes to the bathroom barefoot? That's my slipper!". Taiki the egoist bitch strikes again and I love it.

And poor Mako tries to diffuse the situation saying "should we find another place to hide?" and they both yell at her to not get involved and Ami keeps referring to Taiki as "idol" LOL

I love the framing of this too, Mako is being literally squished between these two while being forced to squat over the toilet.

The translation on this part is VERY wonky, but from what the little I've seen and the context of the art and the rest of the comic, I can clearly tell that Michiru is playing this game so hard LOL.

Haruka is cutely oblivious, frustrated and protective of Michiru, saying she doesn't like (popular men) because they lie constantly and they take advantage of people and Michiru is literally "yes, this is so fun!" in her mind, while also indulging in the role of the victim within Haruka's mind.

Ofc she pulls the moves on Haruka and I know, I JUST KNOW they would have fucked in that closet if it was up to Michiru.

She is so PISSED when they get interrupted by a scream.

Crow and Siren are pretty great in this too, Siren is asking why everyone is so underdressed even tho it's winter and Crow hits her with the "you have a goddamn X on your face, you can't judge other people's attire."

The guy is already a Star Seed zombie in the background HAHAHA

Not even Crow and Siren want anything to do with wtv tf sexual tension is going one between Uranus and Neptune, they're DONE.

Usagi gets stuck in the door frame while Siren is talking about buying Takoyaki and Uranus is sliding off the table so incredibly gracefully, nobody is taking any of this shit srsly.

Crow and Siren PEACE OUT, even tho they look happy Crow is literally saying "I can't stand you anymore." to Siren. Real.

Both Uranus and Jupiter are ready to kick some fucking ass, I LOVE IT! My beautiful simple minded individuals bring me so much joy in their wonderful simplicity.

Mars and Mercury are too busy posing to gaf about anything else going on.

Highlights:

Mars kicks Sailor Moon off of the door frame, her expression is so funny. She has not changed expression for 80% of this comic. She's truly free and happy.

Michiru continues to have the time of her fucking life while the only thoughts crossing Haruka' mind are "kick the bad guy"

Jupiter is beating tf out of the monster while all Mars cares about is complaining to Usagi that her wings are too inconvenient and messy, they even caused her to stain her clothing and hair.

Healer and Maker show up and nobody gives a fuck but Luna. Not even they care themselves, in fact Healer interrupts Maker's speech the second she sees Luna and goes to greet her (she's so real for that).

Throughout the entirety of this page Jupiter has been pulling WWE slams on this monster in the background and absolutely destroying the dining room.

Yeah! Why would you bother with anything if Jupiter and Uranus are on the case?! Both Mercury and Maker go for the SAME chair and they DO NOT LET OFF!

Meanwhile Artemis is still freaking out in the background about Luna and Healer.

Usagi gets distracted by pizza and smacks Mars with her wings so she offers a slice as an apology, meanwhile those two bitches are STILL fighting over the chair.

Artemis has ascended into becoming a sub-atomic particle fueled by pure jealousy and hatred, its only goal to cause chaos and bouncing off walls in the room all of this madness is taking place in.

I LOVE YOU SO MUCH MAKO!! She is absolutely destroying this living room. Also this art is so actually good, it ha no right to be this good for a Sailor Moon parody doujin. It got SO much character.

Haruka applauding her is the peak of their dynamic here, she's so proud.

Michiru is still horny af.

Minako just wants to be untied (first time for everything LOL) and STILL all Mars cares about is the fucking mess Moon is making with her wings by being so careless.

She doesn't care about the mess itself, yk she's just addressing it because it's about Usagi's carelessness and nothing else. She's not even trying to pick up or fix anything. She's simply telling Usagi off.

Usagi is just eating and offering Pizza, she's in another dimension atp.

I also love the little detail of the light fixture shaking, they are literally destroying Usagi's house and she could not give less of a fuck rn.

Usagi is being so cute wiping off the pizza from Mina's face, but as Mina so SMARTLY points out.. untie her first, maybe?!

Rei "did you collect all of those (I'm guessing feathers) from a dead bird?!"

Ending in a beautiful depiction of the madness that is the absurd choreography of Sailor Moon's healing attacks.

I ADORE how DONE Pluto is with this, but especially with Haruka and Michiru. Because she IS right, they barely fuck with her in any occasion that doesn't involve her fixing their mess.

I love how also Haruka is really the only one who gives a fuck because there's no getting through to Michiru for Setsuna. Michiru is literally looking outside the panel twice, she does not care.

Usagi offering pizza cause she's the sweetest, but also kind of oblivious to the multiple layers going on in this situation.

AMI KEPT THE FUCKING SLIPPER! This is her victory, she kept it as a trophy for winning her pettiness war against Taiki and she's so satisfied about it.

Usagi finally remembers Seiya exists and THIS WHOLE fucking time Seiya has been contemplating about if she should tell Usagi the story she thought about telling her earlier. This dramatic butch..

Chibi Chibi has been chilling throughout the whole comic.
