A mom and her two stars ⭐⭐

Sadge version down below because of a very dark game theory based off the game's devs notes!!

TW: symbolical depiction of a mother losing her two daughters (the dev notes imply that she ended their lives to feed the rot with her own despair and also to spare them from a violent death)

Aniel had little interest in fiction. What was the point of such fantasies when history, real history, could entice the mind with the frivolity of truth? She held the old journal, leather stained by bygone blood, and traced its words with greedy eyes. This was a lamb's diary; she was certain of it. That lamb must have been long dead. Cold Mother, guide their soul through the mountains. Guide them home.

It seemed this lamb was a scholar. Or a scientist, she pondered, flipping through the pages. He scribbled as frantically as one. Perhaps a doctor? Sariel was the closest thing to a medic in Woolhaven, and his messy words resembled this handwriting the best.

Except… the more she saw, the more she stopped. Surely she could not be reading these words correctly. Surely. But she continued reading, seeing, feeling. The lamb wrote of how he sacrificed a man, then wrote of dismembering him, then wrote of hiding his corpse underneath the hearth of his home. It wasn't the scariest thing Aniel had read, all things considered.

But what caught her attention was the lamb's fascination with his victim's heart. He could not stop thinking of it. Writing of it. Doodling it on the next entries of his diaries—first simply, then larger, more grotesque, more detailed and vulgar. Aniel flipped to one of the last pages and saw a drop of blood staining his sketch. "For detail," the lamb had written next to it. "Pricked my own finger to get the right color. Camellias wouldn't cut it."

The man was no doctor. He was a priest. Aniel only learned that from the final page, where the lamb confessed he knew of his fate, and wrote a clergyman's prayer to his waiting goddess. Did the Cold Mother ever receive that prayer?

She approached Sariel about it. "I've finished my studies on the journal Yorabba recovered from his last expedition."

Sariel gazed up from his prayers, still kneeling for the graves. "And what have you uncovered?"

"He was a priest," she answered, "though he carried many sins. He detailed his sacrifices as experiments. He carved out their hearts, buried them separately… I think he was trying to complete a ritual."

Sariel's lips pressed together. "… Thank you, Aniel, for relaying your information. It's, ah, would you mind lending me the journal?"

That made Aniel pause. Sariel knew how important collecting historical artifacts was to her. Rarely would he intervene. Yet, he was the caretaker of Woolhaven in Yngya's absence. She nodded, found the journal in her satchel, and gave it to him.

It was only one of her infinite regrets.

Sariel grew mad after Yngya's death. That was what those crowns and their wretched tears did: they drove mortals insane. Aniel could hardly wear Yngya's tear, melded into a monocle, without feeling Her grief. Why did Sariel think he could always carry Hers? Why did anyone in Woolhaven?

Because they had no other reason to live, Aniel realized.

She saw it as Woolhaven's final citizens surrounded Her heart. Baraq's husband and children were killed shortly into the Bishop's massacre. Koka and Chazaq held each other, clutching Aza and Keru's shared blanket. Rami's respirator covered their cheeks, but Aniel could hear them muttering to Temi and Yorabba. "I'll avenge you. I promise. I will avenge you."

Did Sariel wait for them to become so despondent? Or was he planning this since Aniel gave him that journal?

She saw it before him, flipped to the final page. He had pieced together the ritual that the bygone lamb wanted to create. He took Yngya's tear, a ring too large for his finger, and pressed it to his lips. The knife in his hand would unite them again.

He had learned nothing from the gods' failures, nothing from lambkind's sacrifice. Nothing at all.

The children Aniel failed to teach readied their own daggers, their eyes empty. She wept, alone, muffled from the chants of her fellow sacrifices.

Some scholar she was.

"Dissemble no more! I admit the deed! —tear up the planks! —here, here! —it is the beating of his hideous heart!"

A/N: Tumblr is being fucking stupid (I'm PMSing so it gets the "fucking stupid" title instead of just "stupid" for pissing me off during this week of all weeks) about indentations and spacing, so you get an extra banner to divide the story stuff from the head-canon stuff.

Hiiiii I love Aniel blaming herself for literally everything on the planet. Anyway imagine if she was the one who inspired Sariel to do the whole "Let's rip out Yngya's heart and start a worldwide rot plague thingy that will kill everyone on the island by standing in this circle and killing ourselves :)" situation.

Ok more general head-canons yippee!:

Aniel makes perfume in her spare time.

Horrible dancer. She's pretty clumsy overall, but it especially shows up during ritualistic dances.

That said, she's an excellent cook. She gets especially excited when she finds an old recipe and does her best to match it perfectly. "Taste is the only thing that we can truly replicate from the past," she'd say. (Yorabba: "Dancing is also-" Aniel: "You better shut your bitch ass up before I smack you halfway across Woolhaven.")

She used to have a rampant temper as a child. She mainly stopped because of how exhausted being angry made her. She secretly admires Rami for keeping their wrath.

She's secretly super macabre, much like Temi. She keeps trying to drop hints, but Temi doesn't pick up on them.

She also tried to set Temi and Rami up on a date once, but they were both too oblivious to realize it.

Sleeps with, like, a gazillion blankets and pillows and stuffies.

Sariel trained her on how to be a midwife. She helped deliver Aza and Keru
