It’s important to mention that white colonists committed genocide against gender variant people in these cultures. They slaughtered gender variant people and then went on to force the gender binary, homophobia and transphobia onto the people, with the explicit goal of not only wiping out gender variant people, but also of weakening the community bc gender variant people were often seen as a spiritual leaders and healers. I often see this part missing not only in the argument that “nonbinary people exist all over the world” but also when white people claim that cultures of color are extra anti-lgbt. They skip the part where colonization, christianization and/or westernization caused societies that were once inclusive or celebratory of gender or sexual minorities to become homophobic and transphobic.
