If you haven't heard, the em dash has been getting a lot of attention lately…
Because it was trained on pirated work—including freely accessible online writing (like fanfic, academic texts)—ChatGPT picked up patterns and quirks native to human writing.
Including (sigh) the em dash.
There are other victims here (RIP tapestry and delve 🫠), but the appropriation of the em dash—a punctuation mark beloved by writers everywhere—feels especially personal.
A kind of low-grade panic is ensuing. Writers who once memed their own em dash overuse—the greatest punctuation mark ever to grace the control-freak’s lexicon, frankly—are suddenly backing away to avoid accusations.
No. More. We have centuries of dash-abusing writers behind us. We will not sit quietly while AI repurposes our beloved stilted aside—or the just-one-more clarification the sentence demands—or the dramatic pause your comma could never—etc.
You don’t write like AI—AI writes like you.
Defend the em dash.
(Feel free to download/share/stick it where it matters!)
[ID: A two-column, three-row table. The first column has text and the second column has reaction images corresponding to the statement. Row-by-row, it reads:
Re-reading your own work: [a person clutches their face with both hands with text reading “panic”]
Realizing actually good: [the face now has a neutral expression with text reading “calm”]
Realizing you’re the one who has to finish it: [they clutch their face again with the image slightly blurred as the text reads again “panic”]
The “c” in panic and “calm” was replaced with a “k” in both reaction images. /end ID]

Hey hey hey, Ellipsus people!
With November coming up, we know some of you are planning some long projects… (50k words, mayhap? 👀), and maybe already haunted by the ghostly blank page.
Don’t panic (yet)! We’ve got you covered with a new batch of Preptober-themed templates to help you summon your story before November 1 hits: Project Compass, Backstory Planning, and Creative Goals. Read about them in our blog post here!
Annnd of course, there’s a lot more where those came from: character sheets, worldbuilding guides, and story planners/plotting templates galore. You can find them all when you create a new doc on your dash (just hit + New → From Template).
Go forth and prepare your offerings to the word count gods!
