still, for all the plausible deniability of mai/maki, they sort of accompany the burgeoning circle of depictions of textual sister-incest such as rei/fukiko in Oniisama e or ianthe/coronabeth in The Locked Tomb. but where these other two instances of sister incest are used to (veeeeery broadly simplifying) signify apects like possessiveness, control, and the claustrophobia of aristocratic lineages, necromancer-cavalier dynamics, or endogamy, mai/maki are an interesting case because they're not coded with the same toxicity, power imbalances, or hypercodependence often seen in authorial handlings of fictional incest. in other words, insofar as you believe any incestuous subtext between them, they might even represent a refuge for each other against the tribulations of the zenin clan; they seem to figure as examples of sibling incest as an escape from wider abuses being perpetuated by normative family structures. mai is not stigmatised for clinging so tightly or clashing so deeply with maki, which helps lay some groundwork to show that the truly monstrous or horrific aspect of jujutsu society is not the dynamics between these two sisters but the socially condoned violences and systemic misogyny perpetrated by traditionalist sorcerer clans. it's telling that mai is one of the very few people in jjk's story who experiences anything like the meaningful death so vaunted by other characters, even though she had comparatively little power in real life. the point here is that mai and maki were people who fell outside or were intentionally ostracised from the bounds of jujutsu society in various ways, and that also extends to their exact relationship: no character and the mangaka ever says outright what it may be beyond 'resentful sisters', but that is the point; the zenin clan's various abuses and attempts to reduce them to the circumscription of their heavenly restrictions/binding vows mean the two of them naturally find better freedom or breathing space in a relationship which defies naming, and is this strange liminal thing as encapsulated by that mysterious kiss-not-kiss. and that is perhaps why the zenin twins' dynamic is as tragically poignant and influential as it is.
