I usually am not so bearish about getting people to all go pay money to Experience An Art Thing. But seriously, I Love Boosters is so good, it's so vibrant, it's so beautiful and effortful and full of silly little experiments and it is so highly rated by everybody and it just looks and sounds so beautiful in a theatre. If you have the opportunity, you really, really should see this movie in a theatre. You will watch it years from now, love it, and wish you saw it in a theatre. It's so frustrating that this movie is leaving theatres early due to its being so much more absurdist, leftist, and experimental than the Median American Filmgoer is ready for.
This is the kind of film I wait for all year, and then wait to see topped—and I just don't think it's going to be topped. I think I'm going to spend the rest of the year watching less interesting, less out-there, less colorful and vibrant and ambitious films with much bigger audiences, wishing we had more movies like this.
I've been telling people it's a "thoughtful feel-good film," and it is. It's as warm-hearted as a wish-fulfillment DCOM and as clever and surprising as Riley's last flick, and the combination is just perfect: a sweet, silly movie about three Black fashionistas (one of whom is 100% autistic but that's neither here nor there) against the world. And you know they can win. You will feel every emotion in the world, including horny, because LaKeith Stanfield is there and also there's an entire set of scenes where the whole female cast is wearing suits for no reason. The fashion is unbelievably detailed and gorgeous. The score is perhaps the best ever made. The world of this film is so grounded and so utterly magical. For God's sake, watch this movie.
