Throughout the Skywalker Saga, we visit Tatooine in the vast majority of movies. And yet Iâve noticed something interesting.

The scene above is literally the only time we see a red lightsaber on the planet.
We see a bunch of others of course.
Ep. 4: Luke and Obi-Wanâs Blue
Which is awesome by the way.
But thatâs kinda odd that weâve been there so often and yet havenât been there with a Sith since The Phantom Menace. And oddly enough, the one person who we see with a Red Saber in the movies ultimately meets his end there too.
I donât have a super strong thesis here, but I have something bordering on a theory.
Obi-Wan and Maulâs final fight is really really interesting on a ton of levels, but the key point is emphasized a live. It extremely closely mimics the Phantom Menace fight.
And in some ways I think Tatooine (and the rejected Sith who eventually dies there) are encompassed in Maul and Obi-Wanâs line just before that final confrontation.

âLook what I have risen above.â - Obi-Wan
Now I KNOW Iâm overanalyzing, but hear me out.
In Ep1, Obi-Wan visits the planet briefly as a Padawan. He later returns as a Master, far beyond the battle that was waged in that movie.
Luke leaves Tatooine a naive farm boy, and returns as a Jedi Knight, perhaps even a master in his own right.
Rey leaves Jakku (admittedly not Tatooine, but...I mean itâs basically just a Tatooine clone) as a mere junk scavenger, but returns to Tatooine. At this point, she has risen above Jakku. Risen above her own bloodline. She is a Jedi, like her master before her. And by returning Luke AND Leiaâs sabers there, it also somewhat comes to symbolize what the Skywalker name has risen above.
The Skywalkers began as slaves. Anakin left, but was failed by the Jedi and manipulated by Palpatine. Now, under the guidance of Luke and Leia, a Palpatine has risen above her own origins and adopted the name Skywalker, adopted a legacy of rising above the origins they were dealt.
Tatooine is interesting because it is where our heroes grow to rise above. By the time of their ultimate return, they are irrevocably changed and infinitely wiser. They know more about themselves, more about the galaxy. And their actions have carved the course of history. And then they return briefly to the desert which started it all (both in character and in a larger cultural meta sense.)
When our heroes come back it does indeed give us a brief moment to do exactly what Obi-Wan states.
âLook what I have risen above.â
And what does this dumb, beautiful franchise represent if not that.
