wriothesley୨୧
"For meetings?" You ask confused, out of all the reasons he could’ve given you as to why his wedding band was left on his office desk in the first place, that's the one he gives you.
"It's distracting, people don't need to know." He states matter of factly, walking to his desk ignoring the hurt that flashes across your face at his flat tone.
“Wriothesley, the only time I take my ring off is when I shower. A damn meeting isn't a reason to remove the one sign that shows you're married!" You turn to face him as he sits at his desk, heavy sigh leaving his lips.
"You don't understand." He answers in a dismissive tone as he turns his attention to the paperwork in front of him.
He knows he should've explained this earlier, how this looks in hindsight but he can't be bothered. Not when you don't have a clear head either. You're upset.
"What? What don't I understand? Try me please." You push, stepping up to his desk.
"You're not the warden y/n, you're not in my shoes. This is something else entirely. I suggest you get over it already." He warns, eyes never leaving his papers.
"What is the reason though? Why would you take something so important off ? Don't you understand what that signifies?" You question, deflating at the glare he sends your way right after.
"You know what?" He stands pushing the chair back loudly before striding up to you in quick steps.
“I don't have time to be arguing about this. No one down here even knows I'm married as a matter of fact. It's for the safety of my privacy and your safety all together. What's so hard to understand. What can your brain not grasp y/n? Why are you so stubborn?” He asks, though it comes out harsher than he intends.
His jaw clicks when he reads the time on the clock behind you. His meeting starts soon. He doesn't want you here for any of this.
“I'm a warden y/n. This prison is filled with people who are out to get me, I don't want to be seen down here with you, do you understand? Stop being so selfish, so self conscious and try to use that head of yours to grasp what I'm saying. What you're doing down here is reckless and foolish. No one needs to know.” He turns away when you don't reply, seemingly understanding where he's coming from now.
“I have a meeting soon, you need to leave.” he glances back, a knock on his door snaps him out of it.
A young guard steps through. “Warden the officials are making their way down right now.” The guard informs Wriothesley.
The young guard spots you by the warden's desk and apologizes “Sorry I didn't mean to interrupt.”
“No need, they're not anyone special. No need for pleasantries. They just came down here to do business and are on their way out. I'll be out there to greet them in a few minutes.” He dismisses the guard as the door clicks shut
You take that as your cue to leave, embarrassment flooding through you as you fully understand what he meant.
You can't bring your eyes to meet Wriothesley’s at the moment, of course he has a good reason it all makes sense.
“I'm sorry, I understand now. I won't come down here again.” You clear your throat, gathering your belongings. “I'll take my leave.” You turn away but he stops you before you reach the door.
His large palm presses something small, delicate against your chest as he leans down to whisper.
“I forgot to leave this at home, take it back with you. I have no need for it here.” His hand moves and you catch the small silver band that he wears around his finger in your palm.
You only nod, unsure of what to say. You get it. For safety. But this is cruel.
Wriothesley steps back, before guilt can creep up on him at your silence. He opens the door and ushers you out, not even sparing you a glance as you leave, nor a goodbye.
You walk out slowly, processing everything. It all makes sense now but it hurts even more.
A few hours pass when Wriothesley wraps up the meeting. He couldn't shake the unease of leaving you like that earlier but he hopes you can understand where he's coming from, even if he was a mean bastard while telling you.
Though on his way out of the prison he's informed of an accident outside, someone leaving the prison had been attacked. He's asked to go check the scene before he leaves so he does.
When he arrives at the scene it's a mess of blood and belongings scattered as the investigation team does their work.
A file is handed to him and when he opens it everything stills, he feels sick to his stomach at the victims picture at the very bottom.
“Warden, these were left at the scene, we've tried contacting their family but no one seems to answer. The victim was left in cristal condition.” A guard hands Wriothesly a small bag as he explains the situation at hand.
His hands tremble when the contents inside are the jacket you wore to visit him and his ring, the very one he gave you before you left, covered in dried blood that belongs to you.
kayea୨୧
“Don't twist my words.” His visible eye narrows as you open your mouth again.
“Kaeya, that's not what I'm trying to do. Look at you, your arm is broken and your ribs are bruised! You won't give it a break, you know I'm here to help you right?” You hold his gaze, slowly taking a step to him.
He had come home injured. According to Master Jean’s report, he had thrown himself in front of a fallen knight who was in a dire situation and it resulted in him taking quite the blow.
“I don't need anything.” He walks past you slightly bumping into you as he makes his way to your shared room.
“I'm not trying to argue with you Kaeya, I know it's your job but please it hurts me to see you this way.” You push, seeing his shoulders tense up in front of you.
“Your voice is hurting my ears.” He spits, making your mouth shut. “How many times do I have to say it y/n. This is the consequences of my own actions, it's my duty to do so, to protect and serve.” He grits, his anger slowly getting the better of him. It's not your fault, not in the slightest he knows you worry because you care so deeply but his nightmares have been weighing heavy on his shoulders, the burden of a sinner is one he'd have to carry forever. He needs to prove his loyalty one way or another, anyway that shows he will never betray his true home, Mondstadt.
“I know, it's something I understand fully, it's just what if- how will I go if you don't come back to me? I can't begin to comprehend how much dread I'd feel if something worse were to happen to you Kaeya. Every time you leave I pray to the archons that you return home safe so forgive my voice for hurting your ears future but this is something i can't control either!” You continue, his back still facing you but from the way his shoulders stay tense you can tell he won't drop this either.
“I'm not asking you to care.” He whispers
“That's not fair Kaeya, how can you say that so easily?” You ask him, ignoring the tightness forming in your chest.
It's silent, the air feels heavy and for a second you think kaeya will walk away.
“I didn't ask to fall in love with you.” He turns to you slowly. “It's been the most exhausting thing I've ever experienced. My work is nothing compared to coming home to you, you don't shut up, you never give me space! Can't you see? Isn't it obvious I want to be alone?” He takes a step closer.
You swallow at his change of tone, at the way he easily says things that tear you apart without flinching. You didn't want your love to feel exhausting, you just wanted to release him from his burdens.
"You don't get to say selfish things like that. To tell me how you'd feel if I never returned. Archons sometimes I wonder why I married someone so self centered, do I have to spell it out for you y/n? Isn't it obvious that right now I want to be left alone, not cornered about my line of work!” He stands in front of your chest rising and falling with every breath.
You blink, eyes turning away from his now cold ones.
His words ring loudly in your ears, selfish, exhausting, you've been weighing him down without realizing. You care so much, you didn't know it was bringing him down.
“That's not what I want to do to you, Kaeya, I'm not trying to make you feel worse.” You gather everything in you to look back at him, trying to fight the sting in the back of your eyes.
“You are, can't you see? I come home wanting to find peace and I get cornered by you the second I walk in!” He snaps, your shoulders jump at his sudden outburst but you hold his gaze.
“Do you want me to leave?” You ask, voice coming out in a whisper too scared of talking any louder as if it'd break him more.
“No need, I'll leave instead.” His eyes rip away from yours as he walks past you once more, you watch as he nears the door. Your stomach drops, he's injured and wants to leave. A wave of guilt washes over you as he stands in front of the door.
His throat feels scratchy, his words did enough damage for him to see in the way your whole demeanor had dropped, he's just the worst. The silver band on his finger feels heavy, it reminds him of everything he said he'd protect you from, look at him now, he's the reason why you look so deflated, he can't stand himself.
“I'll leave instead , you stay here at least-"
“Now you're holding me back.” His voice is flat , he can't see you shaking your head behind him but he can't bear to look back, he knows he hurt you now. He feels like he doesn't deserve to wear the ring, at least not right now, not tonight after he's said so much.
You see his arms moving around his cast as his fingers slide something off, the small silver band catches under the hallway light and you have to stop yourself from making a sound.
His fingers gently place the silver band by the stand next to the door.
The silence is suffocating, this is the last thing you wanted. You just couldn't shut your mouth and let him rest. This is the result of you being so overbearing, you husband can't stand you anymore.
Your hands shake at your sides when he moves again.
“Don't bother waiting up.” Kaeya sighs, pulling the knob to open the door. The silence behind him made him nauseous, it's not the kind of silence he wanted but he's said too much.
He just needs to clear his mind, leave and come back. Hell put in on tomorrow when he gets home, when his mind is in a better state.
When tomorrow does arrive eventually, the guilt he feels is immeasurable. He enters the eerily quiet house and spots the sight of the silver band he left before leaving. Next to it lies your wedding band, the only remaining thing of yours left in the house. The last trace if you left in your shared home.
diluc୨୧
“Convenience?” You ask, more so repeating what he said to you to make sure you heard correctly.
“You're making something out of nothing y/n.” Diluc exhales a long sigh walking into his office, you follow close behind.
“Don't- no you can't say it's nothing. How would you react if you heard me say something so mean?" You challenge him as he removes his gloves from his hands, the silver band shining as he reaches to flick the wick of the candle that sits on his desk with the tips of his fingers.
You didn't mean to eavesdrop, you just so happened to hear him say marrying you was nothing more than you being convenient when you stopped by the tavern to walk home with him. It made you stop dead in your tracks, he said it so naturally too, like he's felt that way since the beginning, and here you were playing the stupid significant other thinking you had a more important role in his life.
“What's so convenient about me Diluc? They asked why you married me, you could've said anything but that's what you choose to say?” You ask, closing his office door behind you then walking up to his desk.
“Well as of right now I can't name anything convenient about you.” He turns to you, his amber eyes glaring at you in a way that makes his office turn cold.
You stare at him, swallowing the forming lump at his harsh words, “Is that truly how you feel?” you question, his glare sharpens though.
“It's no one's business as to why I married you. You sure know how to overreact about everything. Besides, it's not as if it would be great to brag about you either. If someone spent a day in my place they'd say the same thing too, having such an exhausting and insecure partner isn't convenient at all i suppose.” His eyes, which are usually so gentle, look so different from the way they stare at you from across his desk.
“Would it just be better for me to remove any sign of me being connected to you at all instead? Would that make it more convenient for me?” he asks, fingers dragging the silver band off as he steps closer, testing you.
You swallow hard, you've never seen this side of diluc, the man standing before you wasn't your the man who read his vows to you, this isn't the mad you married.
“If that's what you need to do then what's stopping you? If that ring is troubling you, I suggest you do what you see best fit.” you hold your head high, choosing not to let any emotion waver, eyes never leaving him as you keep your emotions at bay.
“Is that so?” He asks, he knows he should stop but he's been so pent up, so pinned in place with work he's out if it.
His hand slams down on his desk making you jump from where you stand at the sudden loud sound.
“Take it and leave, I have work to do, if you want to be convenient for once I suggest you leave me alone.” He runs a frustrated hand through his hair, he can't seem to stop, he knows he should.
He's not even mad at you, he's just taking it out on you because he can't hold it in, he knows this is wrong.
You stare at him, your husband- no the man before you seems so foreign. You had taken his frustration as him just feeling overworked but this is something else entirely, this is something deeper.
He won't even look at you, he's slammed his ring down on his desk and told you to leave yet he seems unfazed by his own words. Your arms feel heavy as you stay still, is he telling me to leave? Is this it? Is he finally tired of me? You can't help but think.
Though you standing there angers the man more, his head snaps up he's had enough of this he just needs to be alone.
You slowly move to grab the small band, trying to stop the slight tremble your body gives.
“For archons sake I said leave-” His hand rises pointing at the door behind you though that would be something he comes to regret sooner than later.
His outburst should never have happened, none of this was your fault.
The candle sitting on his desk flares as his hand raises, in his heated state of mind his element triggers the flame to engulf right near where you stand, right next to the ring he slammed on the table.
It's like he gains control of his body again, like his mind snaps back to reality the second he sees you clutch your freshly burned arm to your chest. When his eyes meet yours again they're no longer pleading, they're scared. You're scared of your husband.
