Curiosity had gotten the better of Anthony and now that the question was out there, he wasn't quite sure what to do. Of course, he wanted to kiss Valerie. He just wasn't quite sure how to go about it. Or even if she wanted him in that way, but now that she had actually asked him to, it was clear that she did, in fact, want him to kiss her. Such a forgettable book, were it not for the tie to John Lennon. He can't help but smirk. What was it about this book that intrigued Chapman so? Ultimately, the book finds itself back on the shelf. Bennett didn't see the appeal of Salinger outside of the fleeting novelty of a murderer's fascination with it.

She was a sacrificial lamb in human form. If ever there was such a thing. She wasn't exactly the witty conversationalist he typically was drawn to, but her unique perspective felt as if some poor child's imaginary friend had found herself speaking with him. It was comical. Novel. Her proper etiquette did cause her to seem a touch neurotic at times.
Yes, she appeared, in Bennett's eyes, to be a bit of a worry wart.
Now, he could be reading into things. Despite his consistent trying, he wasn't perfect. However, he kept his focus on the books as he spoke to her dismissively. He couldn't let her think he cared enough to want to improve her mood.
βπβΛβΉβ‘ his confession is not something she is sure how to respond to , && though she did , she did not believe she did ; of course . no one who did ever fathomed that to be the case , did they ? brows knit themselves together in confusion as she trails behind him as he peruses the titles , mostly keeping to herself . her hands remain as they always do , nervously fiddling in front of her , not picking up any of the books , just watching his reaction to the different ones . they have taken to going on more casual outings , even though her mere presence seems to borderline offend him .
she has not read the book he is holding , but he seems amused by it , like recalling a distant memory of sorts . the smirk he wears is off if she has to be honest , something darker lurking behind it . as he returns the book , she wonders what he did like in a novel , since this one did not seem to garner favorable attention from him ; though his emotions were barely every shifting away from indifference , carefully composed as anything .
at his summarizing how she makes herself sad , she is not sure how this would be the truth . she tilts her head to the side , frowning to show her confusion . sad ? from thinking ? then again , if he said it , far be it for her to debunk . he has said a lot about her , bluntly so and to her face , most of which has been accurate && she did not wish to admit . he was like a predator stalking its prey , every glance her way assessing her , measuring her up to see if she got some criteria which she honestly did not . he almost had fun with it , though she was not sure as to why . she was not someone to talk much , so she would allow him to fill in the blanks , mostly being the one to carry the conversation . she would just listen , but it seems he has this . . . fascination with her ; it's odd . it's like she reminds him of a play thing he can toy with .
she did worry of course , but was it too much ? now she was more nervous && second guessing herself . she did not mind how he didn't address her when he spoke , thinking that she didn't deserve as much anyway . also , the intensity of his gaze was too much , so she was grateful for the respite when she could get it .

grey never suited her . however , annie was glad for the jumpsuit's coverage over her belly , just beginning to swell with life . rude awakening , that was . without any substantial schedule and with finnick away with the star squad , her days left her open to wandering . lunch , at least , granted a brighter chance at socialization , even if her stomach turned at the thought of the bland food ( if one could even call it that ) .
with a tray loaded full of boiled potato chunks and unsalted vegetable stew , she sat down next to valerie . the girl , younger , proved a great comfort in the sea of cold - hearted people in thirteen . a beam of light , kindred spirit . Valerie herself did not mind her lack of choice in her attire , as it never did bother her before , && a lack of options even made it easier for her ; she never did well when given things to select from , instead being told what to do . she found herself acclimating quickly to the ways of underground environment , finding it to be quite familiar in ways she never would have expected . others seem to be having a harder time giving up their individuality , like miss trinket , who had to be taking it the hardest .
however , though this was one aspect that she did like , the rest was not something she did . she was someone who liked order && a set of tasks to do for the day , but the life of someone down here unless one enlisted to help was just finding ways to spend the time . she had been going to the hospital wing to see peeta , but after a few incidents , mr Abernathy would always keep her away from doing so , so she didn't get hurt . it was not his fault when he lashes out , it is what they had done to him && how they altered his mindset . she would be sent back the way she came , && she would have to find other ways to occupy herself . annie has been someone she went to a lot for the sake of company , the woman coming into being pregnant , && left alone when finnick would away doing what he had to with the rest of his patrol .
that particular day , Valerie did not find herself to be all too hungry , her stomach twisted in knots on itself as it always was . she has been unable to visit peeta for a while now , && her concern for how he might be was even worse . she was assured he was fine , but that was just to get her to rest or stop worrying so much , which never happened anyway . when the woman lowers herself to sit beside her , Valerie offers the best smile she can . it showed how tired && run down she was , but she would do her best to hide this fact && focus on Annie instead ; she must be going through things much worse than her own foolish fatigue .
" h -- hello , miss c -- cresta . " her tone is gentle , though her voice is hoarse , like not in the practice of being used . " oh , not a -- avo -- avoiding , I a -- assure you . " it was a genuine statement , as she is not one to do so . " m -- most -- mostly in the h -- hosp -- hospital wing . " she admits , since even if she was not allowed to see him , she would pace the hallway for a while , needing to get rid of some of the anxious energy some way . βπβΛβΉβ‘

IN HIS RIGHT HAND WAS HIS SATCHEL. Again, typical. However, what perhaps wasn't was the fact that his left hand was pressed against his stomach. If one managed to observe closely enough, the faintest hints of crimson were visible between his fingers. As for his next words, they were spoken as if there was no reason for urgency at all:

the way he was speaking was so common , so usual for him that nothing set off any alarms within her that she had to fret . her hands move , sure of themselves as she continues her task , though whatever relief she had felt at him finally arriving at work was short lived when the next sentence left his mouth . her head flies up , her eyes widening as she takes in the evidence of what he has mentioned ; there was indeed blood peering out from between his fingers , && she hides a yelp of surprise . she does not even ask , does not even give a second look , getting up from the desk as she vacates her seat , gesturing with her head . " s -- sit , p -- please . " she asks of him , already moving , hastily , to get the first aid kit she knew they had stashed away . βπβΛβΉβ‘
