The Princess and the Pea.
It was late at night and Calondra, after many hours of traveling was finally ready to drift off into slumber. Or she would have been. But, ever so faintly at first, a soft wailing sound could be heard creeping between the floorboards. At first, she wondered if it was just the wind or maybe some distant wolves - that alone sent chills down her spine. But, as the sound grew louder, she was ever the more sure - someone was crying. And not just someone, a child.
Had the Lord of the house even mentioned children? As much as she searched her memory, nothing came to mind. Still, what sort of woman would let a child weep and not go to comfort?
So, Calondra rose to her feet, not even bothering to cover herself beyond her nightgown as she searched the halls with a candlestick for the source of the noise.
