Monet on the Run - 54. Two suspects in one rowing boat It is more than likely that Monet painted these houses on the waterfront from a rowing boat, following Daubigny’s example, who worked from his ‘Botin’ since 1848. From time to time, Henry Havard, a French fugitive seeking asylum in Holland, joined Monet in his boat. The suspicious Zaandam chief of police (see previous post) must have been doing overtime watching the suspect foreigners.

It would take Monet a few more years to earn enough money to buy his own boat and convert it into a ‘bateau atelier’. For more background, check my selected posts about “Monet and his Boat”.
