The sad truth about Jacob Frye
Back when I first saw the scene where Jacob and Evie meet Henry, I was worried he was going to be bland and one note, always wanting to cause problems, becoming a templar and having to assassinate him forcing us to āfeel badā despite him being an unlikable A holeā¦ But I was pleasantly surprised to find him genuinely likeable and funny but also nailing somber moments and regret. So I decided to delve deeper and read his database entryā¦ And the results were shocking.
First of all, Jacob is the younger of the twins. Now, at first, that sounds rather bland, whatās so special about that? Wellā¦ He was the last one bornā¦ And indirectly caused his mother to die during childbirth due to complicationsā¦ That is a horrible thing to have hanged over you, knowing you played a part in the death of your motherā¦ And it states Evie constantly brings up her being the elder sibling. While its written to be comedic, being constantly reminded of that canāt help but remind you of what happened because of thatā¦
When their father came back to raise them and teach them to be assassins the constant studies and history lessons didnāt appeal to him, which is understandable, he was a child, not many children truly enjoy lessons in history. So as a result, he slacked in his lessons, meanwhile Evie excelled and absorbed it all, causing her father to spend more time tutoring her and praising her studies.
Jacob excelled in fighting though, and felt eager to fight template, to end oppression and help the downtrodden and just enjoy a good fight. This lust caused a greater rift between the two of them, his father never approved of this style. This caused their dad to focus on Evie more, and in so doing, caused Jacob to want to rebel more to prove what he did was just as good as themā¦ But also possibly made him feel his dad didnāt love him nearly as much as Evie.
Once their dad passed away, he had more than enough possibilities to try and learn more about the Assassinās loreā¦ Yet he chose not to. Why? Lazy and truly uninterested? Possibly, but think about thisā¦ Evie was considered the deadliest and best assassin in their branch, Jacob was second. She was everything needed in an assassinā¦ Meanwhile Jacob, brash and reckless, was only second best cause of the amounts killed. He realized she didnāt need him around, so he purposefully acted a pain, joking, playing pranks, purposefully acting dumbā¦ All to get her to interact with him. Her irritation with him, encouraging him to study and take things seriouslyā¦ All just so she didnāt give up on him tooā¦ He already lost both parents indirectly because of just being himā¦ He didnāt want to lose his sister too.
So yeahā¦ Jacob is much deeper than what surface will show, and Iām glad he was done well. Good on you Ubisoft.
