if you wanna do more PokƩmon Type images, might I suggest Wonder Woman and Hulk? (tho Hulk probably has some overlap with Superman)
@krinsbez asked: Welp, lets keep it going WW and Cap?
Strangely it makes a degree of sense to place Wonder Woman and the Hulk together, with Cap as a third considering he directly inspired her creation. As usual, characters listed below the cut
Wonder Woman Grass: Peng Deilan / Wonder-Woman of China Fire: Artemis Water: Wonder Woman (Tangent) Electric: Jane Foster Thor Psychic: Promethea Fighting: Wonder Woman (The Heroic Trio) Rock: Warriana (Venture Bros) Ground: Queen Maeve (The Boys) Flying: Winged Victory (Astro City) Bug: America Chavez Poison: Southern Belle (Leaving Megalopolis) Dark: Power Princess Ghost: The Maid (Top 10) Ice: Queen (To Be Hero X) Steel: ZealotĀ Dragon: Wonderdon (Jurassic League) Fairy: She-Ra
Hulk Grass: Gunther (Amphibia), Spear, The Heap Fire: Lung (Worm), art by lizardinkart Water: Savage Dragon Electric: Blanka Psychic: The Living Nightmare (Astro City) Fighting: Asura (Asura's Wrath) Rock: Firm Man (To Be Hero X) Ground: Solomon Grundy Flying: General Treister (Venture Bros) Bug: Giga Mac (Punch-Out) Poison: The Toxic Avenger Dark: Dinosaurus (Invincible) Ghost: The Magnificent Steiner (Monster) Ice: Xenmu Steel: Damage Dragon: Grimlock Fairy: Meilin Lee (Turning Red)
Cap America Grass: Old Glory (The American Way) Fire: Peacemaker Water: The Guardian Electric: Stars and Garters (Venture Bros) Psychic: Miss MilitiaĀ (Worm) Fighting: Djibouti (The Sentinels) Rock: Action Man (Venture Bros) Ground: U.S Agent Flying: Major Victory Bug: The Major (The Power Fantasy) Poison: John Thomas Washington / "Presidentman" (Superhuman Safety Squad, by beanytuesday) Dark: Soldier Boy (The Boys) Ghost: The Old Soldier (Astro City) Ice: Silver Agent (Astro City) Steel: Citizen Steel Dragon: President Thomas Goode (20th Century Men) Fairy: Major Glory (Dexter's Laboratory)
So, following the logic, Batman and Spider-Man eevelutions?
genres of surf rock:
Halloween

Desert (Californian)

Indie rock in disguise

Belongs on the Spongebob Squarepants S1 Soundtrack
Would Lois ever use invulnerable baby Jon as an improvised weapon? Like if she needed to clock a guy on the head or crack a window to break into somewhere. Like sure she would know it LOOKS bad but I feel like she's the exact kind of crazy to be like "well JON is ok so what's the big deal with being resourceful".
1000000000000%. To normal people this be a matter of squeamish hand-wringing and debate, she would consider anyone who even thinks this is a question stupid.

I feel like Arsene Lupin probably has enough for kne of those type charts too lol
He does and you could argue Lupin III also does (a good chunk of the ones listed here are really more Lupin III variants than OG, which I tried to prevent but only so much I could do there), but I was also not about to leave his besties behind: (Characters listed below the cut)
yeah bro im paying you matter of fact im reaching for my wallet right as we speak
You do, of course, realize that this is going to end very, very badly Jupiter's Circle #9 (2016)/ Civil War #2 (2007)/Worm 27.2 (2011)/Dark Avengers #16 (2010)/ The Power Fantasy #14 (2026)/ Kingdom Come Chapter 1 (1996)
Oh hey what perfect timing, I was actually just about to post something regarding this exact train of thought inspired in large part by your stuff. There's Worm and Kingdom Come and Civil War as you mentioned - Millar loves showing the bottom falling out, he blows it up into big flashpoint moments in Wanted and Old Man Logan - along with Grant Morrison portraying the whole endeavor going out with a whimper instead of a bang in The Just and Superman and The Authority.
Jupiterās Legacy is, for all its many sins, interesting in part because it's built around the idea of a Superman figure whoās powerful, beloved, and connected enough in Utopian that he can basically single-handedly force everyone to keep toeing the line and refuse to let that moment come when it otherwise might have; Skyfox is the only one capable of trying to force the issue and heās dismissed out of hand because theyāre assuming his problems are purely about their Ivy League soap bullshit. 100 years of pure classic-style cops and robbers, no Krakoas or Miraclemen or Injustices or Ultimates, or even the evolutionary turnover old Jack Hobbs was figuring on. By the time Utopianās old, unpopular, and physically weak enough that everyone sick of his shit can gang up and kill him, any tyrants or ideologues or maniacs who mightāve done something interesting with taking over the world are long out of circulation, itās just a bunch of moron failsons and a creepy old wannabe trying to seize his moment. They canāt really accomplish anything but do a bad enough job at running the world to stoke some righteous anger and inspire a new generation of true-blue capes via Great Depression 2.
(Green Lantern: Blackstars as a stab at much the same concept makes it even more explicit: Superman is going to make them do this bullshit forever so that the DC Universe never has to change how it works, so they gotta kill him. The comparison here made me realize for the first time that while obviously Blackstars Jon Kent maps to Brandon Sampson as the manipulated son, heās just as much if not more so Skyfox, everyone thinks this is about his pet bullshit and thatās 100% a motivator but heās also objectively right in a way the powers that be would prefer to ignore.)
This also makes an interesting conceptual inverse to my beloved Irredeemable, where rather than keeping the traditional superheroic model going way past its sell-by date, its Superman is the loadbearing wall that was always going to crumble under the pressure of anyone less composed and ideologically on-point than your Clark Kents or Sheldon Sampson's having that job. Waid and company make a point that when he snaps superheroes have only been a thing for five years, and none of them are remotely on his level with its responsibilities until Cary gets Scylla's powers; they were doing perfectly fine in the classic routine and none of the rest of this had hit a wall yet. Every 'deconstructive' beat with the rest of the cast is in direct response to him, whether feeling out early on that he's not what he seems, or trying to fill the vacuum left by him, or having to make unthinkable compromises to contain or clean up after him. And of course while all the aforementioned tyrants and ideologues and maniacs had been subdued or retired by the time Utopian's number came up, they were all in their prime and plenty ready to try and take advantage of Tony going ripshit. Altogether an interesting note in how much the functioning of a given 'superhero universe' ultimately just come down to, as you note in the adjoining post, where the 800 pound gorilla sits.
Anyway all this was inspired because between Superman's new suit and probably-Zod, calling it that someone on the My Adventures With Superman staff loved Utopian's design.
Got bit by a horrible yet addictive list bug as of late and decided to do some follow-ups to those Eevolutions of Doc Savage and The Shadow, starting off with Superman and Lois Lane, as well as Jimmy Olsen, who lent himself less to archetype archeology diving than the first two but made things very easy for me since you can just Google "Jimmy Olsen + Thing" and stumble on some alternate form for him. Characters included below the cut just like last time
Inspired by a recent conversation with @krinsbez and seeing as how they both got movies coming out around a similar time, here's an attempt to answer the question around a Street Fighter x Mortal Kombat crossover, which is how do they respond to the hyper-violent new paradigm of the Fatality and how do they fare in the process.

have we ever considerred the possibility that doug walker is an escaped prototype from the lab where they grew mr. beast
the relationship is actually a little more complicated than many presume. artificial youtubers are typically created in bonded pairs, with their shared psychic field helping them to understand things like Algorithm. beast james is a lot more sensitive than a lot of his kind to Algorithm, but is also psychically more fragile. this sensitivity means he is prone to traumatic fugues when he is reminded of the youtuber gestation facility. doug, however, is incredibly psychically stable - and has taken on a mnemophagic role in order to sustain the dyad. to put it simply, doug remembers it so jimmy doesnt have to
imagine having two mothers-in-law and being a bad person. rusty is being sentenced to death in the court of brunch every week.
the way prehistoric animal documentaries will talk about extinction like it happens because of āa failure to evolveā as though evolution is a meritocracy is so funny and so scary
this species persisted over the eons because of its Protestant work ethic to produce more of a specific kind of digestive enzyme that allowed it to extract 4% more nutrients from the dominant plant species in the area
we watched a couple episodes of Netflixās The Dinosaurs a few days ago and it kept going on about shit like āthis dinosaur has found a meal worthy of her future bloodlineā like sheās some sort of Triassic era Bene Gesserit
Its really hard to describe long-term macro evolution without ascribing words like "figured out" or "solved the X problem". Even if you try using more cautious language like "this mutation allowed this following mutation" it suggests direction and intent.
The issue is that macroevolution is one of those concepts that is more or less cosmic horror when it comes to attempting to comprehend it. Not truly incomprehensible but so far beyond the experience of the average person that its hard not to use language that can be read as a narrative.
I understand that, but thatās not really what Iām talking about. There is a degree of personification and narrativization that is just kind of inevitable, especially in scicomm aimed at a general public. HOWEVER there is a point at which is becomes egregious and another, parallel point at which it becomes weird propaganda for a christofascist blood and soil worldview. Iām a huge sucker for the Walking with Dinosaurs model of CGI dinosaur documentaries which all have their troubling rhetorical flaws but I made it through about an episode and a half of Netflixās The Dinosaurs while writing that post before I couldnāt take it anymore⦠at all times it was 30 seconds away from praising its dinosaur characters for their sigma grindsets and the purity of their bloodlines.
A serious version of Michael Kaluta's Shadow Fish.
The Shadow was primarily an identity for the weird voice on the radio before April 1931. The Shadow Magazine established The Shadow's character 95 years ago today.

watching pluribus and the whole carol losing her temper thing is such an interesting metaphor. this insane stuff is happening so she rightfully gets angry which makes bad things happen to everyone, and everyone blames it on her. instead of the thing that's making this happen. they're like no matter what you need to remain calm, pacified. 800m killed by the pluribus that's ok it's collateral. but 11m killed by carol without her even knowing or intending it, so in fact they were also killed by pluribus, and everyone's mad at her.
Metaphors about women who have been abused still having to remain totally rational and sane in order not to be victimized again by the system.
Rhea Seehorn does a great job of defending her character. Wish she didnāt have to.

I have worked in scicomm for a decade, some of that at a paleontology. I would ask you to trust me that evolution is popularly mischaracterized like a kind of smart investment rather than a game of chance and circumstance and that every day I had to find ways to delicately correct guestsā misunderstandings, but you can literally just watch almost any dinosaur or prehistoric animal documentary with an ear for the language and framing around it. You could probably make a drinking game out of it but I think you might die if you took a shot every time a dinosaur documentary invoked the concept of monarchy alone.
The language used in communicating scientific concepts is not neutralājust look at how the concept of evolutionary āfitnessā has been warped in popular understanding to justify eugenics and ableism. There are some really good papers out there on stuff like the rhetoric of invasive species and how it reflects and reinforces xenophobic and nationalistic sentimentsāto the point that some of it just reads like find-and-replace Yellow Peril propaganda.
