I desperately want to see written a book series about a fantasy universe with a Chosen One plot, and a big bad that needs to be defeated. ETC. Except:
Make that the background plot. Instead, it focuses on a bunch of drinking buddies who get extremely tired of waiting for the chosen one to get around to killing the dark lord, and instead proceed to find as many loopholes as possible in the Great Prophecy. And then exploit the shit out of them in order to take down the big bad.
Example ideas I had, "Only the hand of a Saint of the Church of Metias can kill the Minion of The Dark Lord"
Proceed to break into a church, cut the hand off a relic corpse, and duck tape it to a baseball bat. It's Super Effective.
"Only a person of (proceeds to describe a person from a specific fantasy racial group) can kill (other minion)"
(Said minion proceeds to genocide said racial group, meaning all remaining members of it are rare as slugs teeth)
Instead of our heroes finding a member of that race, they proceed to dress up a member of their group who was born in that race's homeland in the fantasy equivalent of blackface and sic them on the BBEG. Because the prophecy only DESCRIBED that race, never said those features had to be NATURAL.
Final running gag: every single authority figure in the universe despises them. The problem is that they keep actually achieving stuff, while the actual Chosen One is currently caught up in some bullshit politics and is several miles behind.
Except for the local trickster god. Who just finds all of this hilarious.
I'm thinking of calling it "The Heretic Squad"
