P GOOD BDAY SO FAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The wind in the everything (Yet there is still) | Le vent dans tout (pourtant il y en a encore)
April 16, 2023.
hello!! first of all i want to say that your blog has been really useful for me understanding things about greek culture and i hope (?) that i have become more respectful because of it. i am certainly making more of an effort. im really really sorry if this has been asked before but i've done a bit of checking on your account (it hasn't been thorough because im new to tumblr and am a bit confused on how tags etc work TvT) and i haven't found a clear answer (unless im dumb idk) if a piece of media (such as epic the musical in my case) or its fandom depicts certain mythological figures as a certain skin tone/racebends the original mythological figures is it okay to depict them in fanworks according to the piece of media's respective depictions of those figures? because i am scared the fandom will attack me if i depict them otherwise. or is it better to just stay away from fandoms like this entirely?? thank you so much for reading sorry again if you've answered this before
Hello and thank you for the good words 💙 I hope you continue to deepen your understanding from various sources!
This is a bit of a grey area. It's not the end of the world if you depict them as the other media shows them. But it would be better to explain and tag the fanwork accordingly. So at least people can see that - for example - this is not Apollo according to the Greek cultural worldview, but it's Apollo from X musical or something. You can check why proper representation in depictions is important in Question 16 in my F.A.Q. page (Link in my bio).
The fandomization of Greek mythology is a huge issue unfortunately, and, if you can, I suggest you keep a healthy distance or interact on a smaller scale with the "fandom". I don't want to sap the joy out of everything, I just find that this specific "fandom" has their own arbitrary opinions (many times not based in Greek culture) and lots of toxicity/ignorance.
