Delilah: [Yet another moment where, if she hadnāt known the simple seriousness of all they were saying then Delilah might just have had more of an outward reaction, past the small, sad smile that he couldnāt see but was now firmly in place. How was it that it was only when there was thousands of miles between them, they could speak more honestly than they ever had when sat in the same room as one another? Her happiness, though, at knowing the feelings she had were at least mutual, was tinged with sadness] It matters to you and me, Matt...- but itāll never matter to anyone else, will it? [Another deep exhale, a shake of her head that he again, wouldnāt see] Youāre an ocean away, and...- and youāre a King, now. Not a prince. It doesnāt matter, Matthieu, if itās real between us if we just canāt have it.
Matthieu: I know, and I guess I can add that to my list of things iām sorry about. Leaving before you ever got back. [In his chambers, he sat at his desk and stared down at the government documents splayed out. He picked up the pen on the blotter and turned it over in his fingers.] I feel as though-- well, nevermind. Iām just glad youāre okay, and that we got to be honest with each other. Just know that Villeneuve is a nice place, for the most part, at least. Summer vacationās right around the corner. Donāt feel obligated, though. I know that you canāt tie down the famous Hollywood star Delilah Duncan. [He squeezed the phone next to his ear, clenching his jaw. There was more that he desperately wished he could say, but knew that he shouldnāt. Living as a king was lonely, and no longer did he have any friends- only subjects. Sylvie wasnāt in contact, Ben was long gone, Rylie was caught up in her own stuff, and Delilah...well, like she just said. It doesnāt matter if itās real]. It was good talking to you. Call me again soon?

Delilah: [She might have chuckled softly at how the conversation had strayed so far, so quick, from what he had intended for it to be if the rest of what he had to say didnāt inspire a level of quietness which was, frankly, not Delilah Duncanās norm. For once, no easy comeback came to her. No one of statement that demanded to be said, even if it cut into his monologue - no, this was a time where Delilah knew to just let him speak, and she simply lay there, absorbing all he had to say. Each time he paused she feared he was finished and she would have to try work against the sudden dryness in her mouth to say something, anything, to fill the space he left, but each time he began again and each time her heart thumped a little faster. When he was done, the silence stretched. Her mind spun. And when she managed to reply, there was a level of emotion in her voice she very seldom had.] Matt...- no one, no guy Iāve ever dated has ever been as sweet and as good to me as you were and you...- you know, you were a handful sometimes- [She laughed, though it didnāt last long and was replaced instead with a frustrated little sigh, because much like Matt she just couldnāt seem to get her thoughts out there] You were a handful. But, I...- when you werenāt, which was so often, you were a perfect gentleman. You are, I mean. Itās like you walked right out of a fairytale story and - Iāve never been treated the way you treated me. Even though it wasnāt even real. I mean... [There was a pause, again, where Delilah tried to gather herself - she wasnāt used to just blurting things out, and Matthieu had taken her completely by surprise. Alas, it had to end, and quietly, she finished - leaving nothing left unsaid] - I mean... it wasnāt meant to be real, but - for a long time, it felt it. To me, at least. And I, uh... - I wish it had been.
Matthieu: This is where Iām going to play the foreigner card and disregard my years in America. [Again, though he joked, Mattās voice betrayed him, and the humor was absent. He sounded worn and tired, and nothing like the happy-to-be-alive Matt that so much enjoyed Delilahās company. It was as though he had been so long without a light in his life that adulthood had begun to sober him to the point of resignation.] So, forgive a pour french soul who does not understand the American ways, but...If it felt real to you, and it surely felt real to me, what does that then make it, but real in all respects that matter?

Delilah: Consider it done. [She hated that he wasnāt there, but... she let him speak, without interrupting. She understood, even, what he meant - she would never be royal, but she had a good idea on how hard it was when you were pulled in two, sometimes more, directions. She was going to say as much and let him off the hook, when she was silenced once again by an altogether different statement. It was like she was holding her breath, her side of the line completely silent until she was able to speak up again, quietly] Thereāre plenty of Delilah Duncanās out there, Matt. Especially for someone like you.
Matthieu: [He could be heard sighing on the line, followed by a long pause.] Look, Delilah. This isnāt the reason I called, so donāt get the wrong impression--I really did want to know how you were handling the earthquake and the deaths of your classmates. But itās been troubling me for a while now, and I have to put it into words. I guess, nowās as good a time as any. So, for a while when we wereĀ ādatingā, I realize that I wasnāt the easiest to put up with. Putain, even when I was in a good mood I was hard to work with, not to mention when I was being moody. You were really kind in trying to work with me. I remember when you took me across the country to Calabasas, and I repaid you with sour company. That was foolish of me. Foolish, meaning, I was a fool for not using that time in a better way. [He paused to collect his words, realizing that he was dominating most of the conversation, but continued on soon after.] Not only did I want to say that Iām sorry for that, but I also want to express how much I appreciate you, and what you did for me. I didnāt say it enough, but I really did appreciate you. And, because of that, youāre wrong. [Matt took a deep breath, and covered his face with a hand, even though she couldnāt see it.] Youāre wrong, thereās not a lot of Delilah Duncanās out there. In fact, thereās very few...one, even. And I think, for a moment there...Well, no, I donāt want to lie. It was more than just a moment that I realized. Merde- [Matthieu was having a hard time actually forming the words to the point he was making, and he almost dropped it. Almost.] I realized that--even though we were only dating for the press--that I couldnāt do better than being with you.

Delilah: Is a little less Philippe Bieste in Buena Vista a bad thing? [She chuckled, quietly, at her own weak attempt at a joke] I can imagine. I can keep an eye out for her, if you want - let you know if sheās okay. Matt, I - I thought you were going to be here when I got back.
Matthieu: Please do, I worry about her a lot. Turns out, running a kingdom is pretty hard. [Though he joked, his tone contained no ounce of amusement, and his voice even seemed...older.] It takes a lot of time, and when I was trying to bolster the political science department at school, I couldnāt really focus on my people. I felt like moving back was the best thing for me at that point. Plus, I had to end things with the person who everybody expected was queen-to-be, so yet another reason to return. She was...she was no Delilah Duncan, to say the least.

Delilah: I... - [She paused, considering telling him about Zephyr. She didnāt know him well, in the grand scheme of life, but sheād hoped after they had been partnered together during the Ā hike they would continue talking, become full fledged friends, even. She wouldnāt get that chance, now, and her chest had been heavy ever since sheād heard... but it wasnāt something to lay on Matthieu.] Iāve still got all my fingers and all my toes, in full working order, to boot, so Iād call that a definite success. Iām fine. Did you hear from your brother? Your friends...- Rylie? Is everyone okay?
Matthieu: I think that my parents are going to pull Philippe out of school, and have him private tutored at home again. Also, I havenāt been able to get in contact with Rylie quite yet, but the fact that she hasnāt made the news is...reassuring, in the worst possible way. So after I called her and got voicemail, I thought of you.

Delilah: Matt. [She relaxed, instantly] I didnāt expect a call from you. Is everything okay?
Matthieu: Apparently not. How are you holding up?

Delilah: [It took too long a minute for Delilah to actually take out her phone and answer, too tired and hence annoyed by the ringing to check caller ID] Delilah Duncan. Who is it?
Matthieu: Bon matin, mademoiselle Duncan.

āJust because thereās the opportunity does not mean you should take it.ā Matthieu shut the door of the classroom behind him, turning to face the single student occupying the detention block from 4-6 pm. Matt wasnāt happy about getting put on the detention duty for the day, but what ticked him off even more was that the school authorities knew the only person in the detention block was his younger brother.Ā āHow could you have made detention so soon after coming back to school?ā
Glancing around as nonchalantly as possible, Cat mumbled to herself. āFer da luv ofā¦ā Her fiery hair was blowing in the sunny breeze. āShite.ā She grumbled. āAh rilly hohp nohbahdy saw dat.ā

āDo you know how many times Iāve done this?ā Piper scoffed, shoving a spray can in her jacket before zipping it back up. āAnd, as long as I donāt get caught, and people like you keep your mouths shut, then Iām gonna keep doing it.ā She shrugged. āNo stoppinā me now.ā
Matthieu calmly took out his phone and snapped a quick picture of the girl and her artwork before replacing it in his pocket.Ā āHonestly, I kind of like it,ā he said, examining it carefully.Ā āBut, really, you should probably wash it off when youāre done.ā

āRatting me out would look like an angry ex move, Mattā take it from me, I think youād find it in your best interest not to,ā keeping the handful of crushed up posters well hidden, Delilah turned from the notice board to face him, her face lit up in a very innocentā but not very casualā smile, āIām pretty sure thereās no law against making sure certain posters are front and center. Itās important the cheerleading tryout ones are on full displayā whatās so wrong with me taking care of my team?ā
Matthieuās frown was deep and unwavering as his blue eyes stared Delilah down.Ā āI expect more from you, Delilah,ā he sighed, stepping closer and reaching behind her to snatch a few posters back. As someone who valued extracurricular activities as an important part of supplemental education, he would not stand for having some be damaged by a lack of enrollment.Ā āUnfortunately, I canāt take your side on this one. Cheerleading, shockingly, is not the most important activity at this school. Itās wrong because other clubs and organizations need membership to sustain their sponsorship by the school, and you arenāt helping them.ā
[text]: Congratulations then is in order, /King Matthieu./
