I’d always hated The Giving Tree as a kid, but I never realized how much I needed this alternate ending until just now.

I’m sorry this version is bad and you’re all being very childish about analysing it. Shel Silverstein’s children stories are not happy. They aren’t meant to be happy. Not only does this version completely butcher the tone, it erases what makes Silverstein’s stories stand out to children. At the end of The Giving Tree there is no happy ending. There’s no legacy. There’s no happily ever after. There is a sad, tired old man sitting on a tree stump. The story flatly interjects “And the tree was happy.” at every juncture. The point of The Giving Tree is that at the end none of it mattered. The boy denied the tree asking him to do the thing that made him happy as a child. He does this a few times, in favor of money, and a family. The tree gives him a means to these things, but they ultimately don’t make him happy. The boy returns sad the third time. He wishes to escape. He takes the part of the trunk with the heart he carved for him and his lover but leaves the heart he carved of him and the tree. The final time he is only tired. He’s not happy. He can’t even do the things that did make him happy. There’s just an old, tired man, and a tree stump. It’s sad. It hurts a bit, for a lot of reasons.

Shel Silverstein’s books have been banned on libraries for “promoting” the disrespect of authority, suicide, disobeying parents, death, violence, etc. And yet children love to read these stories. Because they fascinate kids. Just because a story did not make you feel good does not mean it needs to be rewritten. Just because the impact it had wasn’t a pleasant experience doesn’t lessen the significance of the story. This rewritten version completely undoes what makes Silverstein’s stories special and fascinating to children. It turns them into an average, almost fairy tale like story of a life, money, a family, descendants. It turns a melancholy finality into an overdone happily ever after. This rewritten version is indistinguishable from hundreds of other children’s stories. Silverstein himself commented that children are told stories about happiness that make them question where this “happiness” is and why they don’t have it. I would urge any adult to evaluate why this story makes you so much more uncomfortable now. Why does it hurt more? Why does it make you want to rewrite it? Erase it? Please confront the way the original story makes you feel rather than take refuge in a frankly poor rewrite. Stories exist to make you feel something. Don’t ignore that.

The original ending of The Giving Tree might have been rather bittersweet, but by changing the ending, you ultimately change the book’s original message.

I recently did this new cover for the second edition of Dark Horse’s Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Art of the Animated Series hardcover book, which will be released on November 24, 2020. This is a redo of a DVD cover I did ages ago. I always liked the drawing but was never happy with how cramped the composition was and how poorly I colored it. It was fun to take a crack at it again. The second edition will have a few new things in it. Hope you enjoy!

You know it would be interesting if there was a heroic Zeti shown. Maybe the comics could allow it and Sega's anal restrictions don't get in the way of that happening.

The only issue I could see is that having a heroic Zeti would likely lead to having to actually flesh out what the Zeti are and giving them any sort of context and I could see Sega putting a kibosh on that in case they want to make up their own thing, or even because they see the Zeti as purely evil

With how deathly afraid Sega is of actual worldbuilding to the Sonic universe, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were to veto such a thing if it was proposed. Sega doesn’t seem to want to actually do any worldbuilding themselves (the last Sonic game to even HAVE proper worldbuilding was probably Sonic ‘06), and whenever someone like Ian Flynn tries to explore such things, Sega will go out of their way to shut them down.

It’s likely because Sega wants to be like Nintendo and believes that gameplay is more important than story, which is actually my main problem with Sega’s overly restrictive and stifling mandates, being that because of how the newer games are structured more around gameplay, it leaves no room for any story development. Because of that, you end up with Sega having almost direct control of a medium that’s not exactly compatible with the current version of the Sonic franchise.

This is especially ironic when you consider that the past two mainline Mario games (3D World and Odyssey) had more worldbuilding for the Mario universe than IDW ever really has.

You know a saw a comic that took place in the pre-reboot world and it showed a Zeti who was found the TechnoMage cult and taught them how to do techno magic. It's on deviantart but I thought the idea was cool and even better it had a hairstyle similar to Regina implying that Zetis could breed with humans. Kind of liked the concept. Makes me think that Sonic humans can breed with anything like in D and D.

Honestly? When you put it like that, the Zeti sound like they’re a way better fit for the pre-reboot than the actual games, post-reboot, or even IDW for that matter, and now I kinda wanna read that comic because of it.

Also I would go for that idea of humans can breed with anything but there’s implications that I really don’t wanna touch within that so I’ve made it an impossibility.
