Amberfield birthday snippet because it's Rachel's birthday :)
It’s her first birthday after leaving Arcadia bay and for once, Rachel doesn’t think she wants to make any plans. All those huge parties she’d do? All the nights out she’d spend drunkenly moshing out with those shitty Vortex weirdos? It's weird but she's only just now starting to realize she doesn’t actually have to please them or blend in with them anymore. She can be her own person, right? That's what this was all about. And right now, after a long day of studying, she just wants to go home and eat a slice of cheesecake while watching reruns of The Bachelorette.
Except when she gets home, a nervous looking Max pops out from behind the couch holding a birthday cake with a hastily placed '19' candle on top of it. “Um! Ah! Happy birthday, Rach!”
“M—Max? What are you doing?” Rachel asks, incredulous.
“Oh, crap! Sorry, did I scare you?”
“No, no, I’m just—did you really just give me a surprise party?”
Max bites her lip and looks toward the floor. “Well, um…it’s not much of a party, as you can see. I just—I figured you had plans tonight, and I wanted to wish you a happy birthday before you ran off! So, I, um, got you something!”
Rachel can hardly speak. “Max…”
Setting the cake down, Max runs over to the kitchen table and grabs a neatly wrapped box covered in glittery paper. She carries it with shaking fingers, can't even keep eye contact as she hands it off. “I hope you like it.”
Rachel doesn’t look at the box, however. Just max. Right now, that's kind of all she wants to see.
When said Max ushers her to open it though, she follows right along. And when she sees it, she almost can’t believe it
It’s a charm for her bracelet. A beautiful Metal Raven with it's wings outstretched and it's beak pointed toward the sky. But that's only half of it, because inside the case, nestled into the lining, is a Polaroid. Of them. Taken right around the time they first moved in.
“It’s not much, I know," Max mutters. "But, I always love seeing you peruse all the jewelry stores for different charms and—and I figured I’d get you one.”
It's with all the anxiety of a frightened fawn that she taps her thumbs together and says: “Do you—do you like it?”
For a while—more like an eternity, really—Rachel just stares at Max again. Hazel eyes locked onto that gorgeous deep-sea blue, a color she allows to cloud her whole world.
They’ve been roommates for 2 months now. But this? This is something else.
Without thinking Rachel sets the box down and cups Max’s face.
Her words are cut off by the kiss that comes next.
