we used to say kill all men
Being a list of Novelizations of the Life of Christ/ New Testament with quick notes about their content and quality for interested mutuals on Tumblr.
*The Books I've finished, in no particular order:*
1. Dayspring: Gay Jesus, Gay John the beloved, poetry, modern setting, deep, horny, funny, possibly a perfect book???
2. Him: Trans Jesus, family drama, what does it mean to be fully god, narrative, poorly proofread
3. Ben Hur: This book is terrible
4. The Golden Bow: similar vibe as Ben Hur but it works. By the same woman who wrote The Witch of Blackbird pond so it has that mid-century YA feel
5. Behold The Man: Time Travel, neuroses, slightly Ableist, novella that I wish was longer, adequately provocative
6. Christ the Lord Out of Egypt/Road to Cana: Anne Rice?!??!? These are really fucking engaging in depicting Christ as fully God and fully human. It kills me she didn't get to write the last two she planned for the series
7. The Testament of Mary: lyrical, human, short, nearly perfect
8. A Life of Christ: Shusako Endo. Academic-but-not-quite, but not a novel, hard to classify. I don't know, I liked it well enough
*Books on the list I'm planning to read through the year*
10. The Good Man Jesus And The Scoundrel Christ: by the same guy who wrote "his dark materials" so it should be a little spicy
11. Lamb, The Gospel According to Biff: IDK it looks funny
12. King Jesus: historical fiction purged of the miraculous elements of the story
13. The Singer: idk it looks very 1970s and published by Intervarsity of all organizations
14. The gospel in brief: Tolstoy
15. The five books of Jesus: I don't know anything about this one, but it's on the list
16. The gospel according to Jesus Christ: the author has a Nobel prize, so it's probably good
17. The life of our Lord: stories Charles Dickens wrote for his family that he never wanted published. Well we published them
Yet Another Ideal Theatre
âTheatre,â for those who may not have heard of it, is a kind of corpse that very impassioned people have tried for many years to slap awake. The dry flesh crumbles from its fingers; its tibias and ribs are on display for all to see; its skull has been cracked open by an ice axe, and Internet Media Domination stands whistling nearby, leaning on something pointy that it hides behinds its backâŚ

Most theatre pieces are bad. Roughly, they can be categorized as âexpensive badâ and âcheap badâ. âExpensive badâ is the province of Broadway and Broadway-Derived Entertainment Products, where you can get a decent seat in exchange for a kidney. Cheap bad is when you go to a former warehouse and pay twenty bucks to watch actors slosh around in a kiddie pool and scream. Sometimes, miraculously, there is âcheap good,â where thereâs really something interesting about the piece (perhaps the kiddie pool is used as a medieval keep, or someone has bothered to write a worthwhile performance text). This seems to imply the existence of âexpensive good,â though Iâve only ever glimpsed it.
This is all so good itâs hard to choose just one bit to highlight. READ THIS. đŤľ
So to sum up: my ideal theatre is one where there is a story, but not too much of one, and there is scintillating language, but thatâs not strictly necessary, and images, but if there are words then the images can be embedded in the language rather than being visible onstage, and it can all take place on the plane of the audienceâs mind, except for when youâve got some fine spectacle like puppets or huge mechanized scenery. And it should treat me like Iâm smart. I suppose the real conclusion is that Iâm unpleasable.
Despite this, I have been told that I am an excellent and engaged audience member. Go figure.

Wash the white clothes on Monday and put them on the stone heap; wash the color clothes on Tuesday and put them on the clothesline to dry; don't walk barehead in the hot sun; cook pumpkin fritters in very hot sweet oil; soak your little cloths right after you take them off; when buying cotton to make yourself a nice blouse, be sure that it doesn't have gum on it, because that way it won't hold up well after a wash; soak salt fish overnight before you cook it; is it true that you sing benna in Sunday school?; always eat your food in such a way that it won't turn someone else's stomach; on Sundays try to walk like a lady and not like the slut you are so bent on becoming; don't sing benna in Sunday school; you mustn't speak to wharf-rat boys, not even to give directions; don't eat fruits on the streetâflies will follow you; but I don't sing benna on Sundays at all and never in Sunday school; this is how to sew on a button; this is how to make a buttonhole for the button you have just sewed on; this is how to hem a dress when you see the hem coming down and so to prevent yourself from looking like the slut I know you are so bent on becoming; this is how you iron your father's khaki shirt so that it doesn't have a crease; this is how you iron your father's khaki pants so that they don't have a crease; this is how you grow okraâfar from the house, because okra tree harbors red ants; when you are growing dasheen, make sure it gets plenty of water or else it makes your throat itch when you are eating it; this is how you sweep a corner; this is how you sweep a whole house; this is how you sweep a yard; this is how you smile to someone you don't like very much; this is how you smile to someone you don't like at all; this is how you smile to someone you like completely; this is how you set a table for tea; this is how you set a table for dinner; this is how you set a table for dinner with an important guest; this is how you set a table for lunch; this is how you set a table for breakfast; this is how to behave in the presence of men who don't know you very well, and this way they won't recognize immediately the slut I have warned you against becoming; be sure to wash every day, even if it is with your own spit; don't squat down to play marblesâyou are not a boy, you know; don't pick people's flowersâyou might catch something; don't throw stones at blackbirds, because it might not be a blackbird at all; this is how to make a bread pudding; this is how to make doukona; this is how to make pepper pot; this is how to make a good medicine for a cold; this is how to make a good medicine to throw away a child before it even becomes a child; this is how to catch a fish; this is how to throw back a fish you don't like, and that way something bad won't fall on you; this is how to bully a man; this is how a man bullies you; this is how to love a man, and if this doesn't work there are other ways, and if they don't work don't feel too bad about giving up; this is how to spit up in the air if you feel like it, and this is how to move quick so that it doesn't fall on you; this is how to make ends meet; always squeeze bread to make sure it's fresh; but what if the baker won't let me feel the bread?; you mean to say that after all you are really going to be the kind of woman who the baker won't let near the bread?
