[tw: death in family, familial disarray]
Headstrong and independent, two words all of Marenâs teachers used to describe her in breakrooms. Theyâd warn each otherâ oh, you have her second period? Well, sheâs certainlyâŚopinionated. Of course, theyâd write a simple âjoy to have in classâ on the report card and call it a day. It was evident after a few parent teacher conferences that Marenâs older sister was the one keeping the Mott family together. The whole town knew about the Mott family tragedy, but judging by Marenâs attitude, they were doing just fine, so there was no need to intervene. Marenâs twin brother, Warren, was a different story, but they knew Maren was handling that herself. If it ainât broke, donât fix itâŚright? Â
Maren never experienced familial structureâ at least not any that she remembers. Sheâs been told she had a father, but that means nothing to her now. Sheâs been told that Felicity Mott is her mother, but sheâll believe it when she sees it. As far as sheâs concerned, the Mott family is a family of three: herself, her twin, and their eldest sister. Anyone else is inconsequential. A waste of space and resources.
Maren sees everything in black and white, really. Itâs all or nothing with her, in every sense. If she loves something, everyone will know. If she hates something, everyone will know. She typically loves more than she hates, unless that hate is an injustice, or neon yellow. There is no middle ground. There is no âcomplicatedâ. Things are as she sees them, and maybe thatâs a flaw to some, but sheâs never had a problem with it.
Keeping busy is Marenâs way to stay afloat. Sheâs always been known to have extracurriculars out the ass, and jobs on top of that to pay her way in the Mott RV. All her counselors told her she could go to UNLV if she wanted, or even a better school farther away. With her jack-of-all-trades resume and her background to exploit on college essays, sheâd be a shoo-in anywhere she tried. But going to school meant leaving Warren, and leaving Warren meant, well, she didnât want to think about that. Primm Community College was just fine with Maren. Sheâd be fine. Just fine.
