no one cares that you shave your legs because of sensory issues shut the fuck up forever
really galling amount of people misinterpreting this post so i'd like to clarify. i'm saying that when discussions about patriarchal beauty standards and the way women are heavily shamed and coerced into eschewing their own natural state of being (hairy) are occurring, it is unhelpful (AT BEST) to interrupt and say that the reason YOU remove the hair from your body is because of sensory issues. that's not what we're talking about. stop asking for validation for doing something that society at large wants you to do. stop derailing the conversation because you feel uncomfortable about being made aware that you, for whatever reason it is, adhere to harmful, unfair and ridiculous beauty standards. you're stepping into the middle of an important conversation that needs to be had and making it all about you. shut the fuck up forever.
also quite frankly i think a lot less people would experience sensory issues if they let their hair grow out so that it isn't bristly and rough and irritating. and i cannot help but wonder why these sensory issues aren't as predominant in men. maybe you're uncomfortable with the hair on your body because you've been taught to be uncomfortable with it. just a thought.
Love character relationships that can only be described as "whatever the fuck these two have going on"
a non-canon mini comic for fun
just to reiterate, this is NOT canon to the comic. or to either movie probably lol.
just love the idea that the reason simon didn't listen to the written stuff was because it sucked to read (and not, like, either defiance or a purposeful disregard for the sake of survival)
i feel like you can tell through how little i fuck with grace's glasses in the usual comic that i wear glasses IRL. if my glasses aren't perfectly aligned on my face i am SHOVING them back in place. ryan gosling obviously does not wear glasses regularly
I do actually wonder if part of the reason people start believing ancient aliens type conspiracy bullshit is because they're so divorced from labor they don't understand that a bunch of guys could absolutely quarry a large rock, move it somewhere, and build something with it because that's not actually all that hard or complicated. I've seen people use a simple chisel and hammer to crack boulders the size of houses clean in half, this stuff is a skill that needs to be learned ofc, but the idea that it was impossible for humans to build large, complex, sturdy structures with relatively "primative" tools is so silly I struggle to understand how someone could believe that unless they legit have no idea how labor works.
It's the same beef I have with Fallout. I know they excuse humans being so slow to redevelop society with all "knowledge being lost in the war" but that's just...not how things work. Humans figured out construction and farming very early. There's no way for humans to truly forget how to do this stuff, especially since people survived and could preserve and share what they know. But I just cannot fathom how in 300 years no one's figured out construction or fiber arts or soap making or anything humans have historically figured out super early in the process of being human.
And the only way I can see someone write a world like that is if they either didn't care (fine, it's not real and I get digging the apocalypse vibe) or were so divorced from the process of labor and creation that they actually think those things are way too hard for someone to figure out on their own.
If you think humans couldn't do these things without being taught or helped you have a very warped idea of technological progress and human ingenuity. No one taught humans how to build and create, we figured it out on our own, and it was not just smacking rocks together until something clicked either, ancient humans were just as intelligent as modern ones, they could use logic and reasoning to figure out how to do something new based on what they already know.
Idk it's a theory anyway, but I really do think it's interesting how as a kid I def could believe doing these things is impossible for ancient humans to being an adult who knows things and literally cannot even comprehend believing any of the incredible things ancient humans can do were "impossible" in any way. It wasn't. Humans are incredible, stop underestimating us. And crack open some wiki pages or even youtube tutorials so you get a grasp of how the world works, it's good for you.

"We are in a cultural moment that demands purity of characters, particularly characters in romantic narratives (whether the romantic storylines are primary or secondary). In book reviews, readers bemoan the βproblematic,β and unequal power dynamics make them βuncomfortable.β[1] This insistence on only the most upstanding and unblemished unions erases all possibility of person-making, which is to say, growth and change. Instead, we end up with narrative corn syrup: an uncomplicated, saccharine meal that goes down fast but is, at the end of the day, unsatisfying."
C.L. Clark discusses writing sex, desire, and queerness in Nicola Griffith's Ammonite
I'm so damn impressed by CL Clark for saying this outright and refusing (despite the intense controlling behavior fans display toward queer writers, especially of canon sapphic love stories) to soften the sharp edges in the main love story of Magic of the Lost.

part of the reason i love mean, bitchy, rude, domineering, firecracker female characters and loathe seeing them defanged is because the prickliness repels men and the defanging is ALWAYS to make them more fuckable for whatever man they have a weird sexual tension with. like yeah i don't like the Mean Lesbian stereotype either but at least the mean lesbian isn't shelving her career to become a tradwife after spending however many episodes/chapters/issues saying how much she didn't want to do either of those things
i will take twenty mean women being headcanoned as lesbians solely on the basis of how fucking toxic they are before i will take ONE formerly mean woman suddenly being sunshine and rainbows in the arms of a man she should be slapping across the face
i love seeing women get character growth and interesting arcs but NOT BEING ATTRACTED TO MEN/THE MALE PROTAGONIST IS NOT A CHARACTER FLAW
and maybe this isn't revolutionary of me at all but in addition to being perfectly fine with the mean lesbians i also just want to see more female characters who are genuinely Married To Their Work. not in that she doesn't have time for dating but wishes she did, i mean that she genuinely gets all the fulfillment she needs from the satisfaction of a job well done and the socialization she enjoys in the process of doing her job. and it can be any kind of thing that keeps her busy, not just modern formal 9-5 employment; "passion" and "calling" also work here instead of "job". female characters are never allowed to loiter around unfucked, especially not if the male lead wants a piece of that (and even if the male lead getting a piece of that would completely derail everything she has going on). like oh my god can just one chick win an employee of the month award and not have to immediately suffer some sort of cisheteronormative penance for it
the thing is, as much as i want to hate the stereotype for its real-world implications, i'll only be able to stop finding catharsis in the fictional(!) Mean Lesbian when i stop feeling alienated by the mainstream reduction of female characters to sexdolls and housemaids.
anyway, in light of recent developments, i'm briefly returning to this post to give a hearty congratulations to both eva "scapegoat" stratt and captain ava iron lung for each winning the Mean Lesbian Employee of the Month award. your names' allusions to the biblical eve are not lost on me and i too agree that eve did nothing wrong. i do think it's feminist praxis for an intimidating, glowering, nonsexualized woman to seal a crying man inside a metal box and not let him back out
Most of the time the "mean lesbian" is really just woman who says no to men and that *must mean* she's a lesbian. Because obviously men are the most desirable things in the universe, right?
top reylo posts of all time
star wars heritage post
Reading through project hail mary for normal (bloodymary) reasons and now I need to find fics with rocky and simon bonding. Rocky was basically living through his own iron lung-esque journey for years but through space instead of a blood ocean and with radiation instead of a giant eel monster. They would definitely understand each other for better or for worse
Ok I finished the book my verdict is that anyone who sidelines rocky in a bloodymary dynamic when he and grace are literally star-crossing soulmates will die by my hand. engage with the source material OR ELSE
