Exceptions, the Enemy of Eternity

Mavuika being so passionate about her people that she literally doesn't care about her own life anymore and is reckless as a result is a fantastic fatal flaw to give any character, but especially one that is associated with fire. it's a trade-off, she lets herself burn to ashes and in exchange her nation's flames can blaze on long after she fades away. she lets Mavuika, the person, burn until only the light of the Pyro Archon, the metaphorical sun illuminating her people, remains. Mavuika doesn't care about anything but Natlan and its people. she has already died for them once before, and she tried to do it again just for Natlan to have another 500 years of peace. was it a reckless and ultimately terrible plan? yes. but Mavuika wasn't thinking about that, she was only focused on keeping her nation's flames alight for just a little longer. because again, she doesn't care for herself at all. earlier in the quest she destroyed her personal items just to get Kachina and the rescue squad out of the Night Kingdom. no doubt that loss was devastating for Mavuika, but she brushed it off, just as she did with every loss she's experienced in the past. all for Natlan.

actually, that's my main point. there are two lines that stick out in the archon quest: "For Natlan!" and "No one fights alone." these two lines are the backbone of each of the main story threads in the AQ. "For Natlan" is Mavuika's personal motto, the line she lives and dies by. everything for Natlan, even herself, because nothing is more important to her than Natlan. and as the story is presented to us, "No one fights alone" is meant to be the main theme, and it's in direct opposition to Mavuika's personal philosophy. because in many ways, her perspective on her duty as Pyro Archon has always involved self sacrifice, giving up everything to the flames so you can be Natlan's beacon of hope. and this often requires Mavuika to only rely on herself, to push her needs and trauma down for Natlan. she has to fight alone, or she is failing as an archon. yet that's not what she tells others, because she still follows "No one fights alone," just with the silent addendum of "except for me."

that's absolutely devastating. and so perfect for the Pyro Archon, which is again because of the whole fire and burning yourself theme that goes along with Pyro. actually, in war, soldiers are expected to act this way as well. you do not matter, your life does not matter, the only thing that is important is that you fight for your nation. even if that means losing yourself, mentally and eventually physically, because war means death. Mavuika is literally the perfect personification of sacrificial flame and the struggles of war. even her recklessness fits this perfectly- after all, in our own history, war is often reckless and cruel. Mavuika is cruel to herself in her recklessness, and cruel to her people in that she doesn't give a second thought to her own importance to them. and this obviously contradicts the perfect leader persona she puts on, but that's because this is exactly what war and leadership in war requires of you. you only exist for the people, but your life does not matter either. it's contradictory and that's the point.

Mavuika was so beautifully set up for a character arc that I'm still reeling at how they didn't do anything with it in the end. her personal philosophy being a direct contradiction to that of her nation is the best choice for conflict in the story. except they didn't do shit with it, because in the end her self-sacrificial nature is never challenged properly. she never truly followed the "No one fights alone" philosophy because she ended up fighting Gosoythoth, the true enemy of her nation and the source of the main conflict, practically alone (Traveler doesn't count, they're not even a proper character in this quest and the Tenoch parallels were never utilized well enough for their presence to mean anything). once again, she does everything "for Natlan" and never once leans back on her people when it actually matters. the Six Heroes could've followed her to Gosoythoth, which would've forced her to fight alongside them rather than alone like she always has, giving her the first kick in the right direction for her arc. but that didn't happen. Capitano did briefly challenge her nature by taking her place in the ultimate sacrifice, but it was too little, too late. that moment would've meant more if the Six Heroes forced Mavuika to not fight alone for once. and because that didn't happen, Mavuika is worse off for it.

actually, this is why people think she's a Mary Sue. if her nature was addressed as the terrible, destructive thing that it is, then people would've understood the core of her character better. she is not perfect by any means even with the story as it is now, but because her flaws are never challenged and the story barely addresses them, people feel like she has no true flaws. it's a failure on the writers' part, because a character as interesting and complex as Mavuika would've been so easy to give a proper arc.
