âNothing heals me of a sore and angry heart like a walk through the very city I often feel denying me. To see in the street the fifty different ways people struggle to remain human until the very last minuteâthe variety and inventiveness of survival techniqueâis to feel the pressure relieved, the overflow draining off. I join the anxiety. I share the condition.â âVivian Gornick, âApproaching Eye Level,â Beacon Press, 1996.Â
Painting by Mana Resident Alex Kwartler from his first solo exhibition, Pain Quotidien, on view now at Magenta Plains.
A preview of Alex Da Corte and Jayson Musson's video "Easternsports" (2014), a commission of the ICA Philadelphia.
Alex Da Corteâs first museum survey, Free Roses, is currently on view at @massmoca, featuring a selection of works made over the last ten years. This excerpt is from Da Corteâs groundbreaking video installation, Easternsports (2014)âmade in collaboration with artist Jayson Musson for the @icaphiladelphiaâwhich is also on view at @whitneymuseum as part of Dreamlands. The work envelops viewers in a vibrant, surreal, visually ordered, but psychologically messy world, in which the videoâs archetypal protagonists âperform their desired lifestyles.â

Co-founded by artists John Rubin and Dawn Weleski, Conflict Kitchen is a take out style restaurant in Pittsburgh that only serves cuisine from countries with which the US is in conflict, rotating identities every 6 months in relation to current geopolitical events. Â The food is wrapped in beautifully designed paper packaging printed with statements on topics ranging from food to religion, work, and politics.
Operating seven days a week in the city center, Conflict Kitchen reformats the preexisting social relations of food and economic exchange to engage the general public in discussions about countries, cultures, and people that they might know little about outside of the polarizing rhetoric of U.S. politics and the narrow lens of media headlines.
