How did I end up here

I haven’t posted in so long cause I kinda gave up on tumblr so I also don’t expect this be seen by a lot of people but I came back because I feel the need to talk about this.

I’ve been watching Voltron for over a year now, ever since after season two came out, so I like to think I’ve grown with the fandom and seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. And let me just say, the fandoms been particularly ugly these days.

I know we’ve had our “scandals” and drama before but I feel like now more than ever, we’ve been at an all time low. Recently, as most of you know, the Voltron cast and creators have been accused of queerbaiting and being homophobic more than ever. Some even say the show is racist, but that’s a discussion for another time.

I can see why people would say this, considering how Adashi was hyped up by both voice actors and creators of the show. Quoting Lauren via the Voltron twitter account, “you will meet Adam, Shiros significant other in season 7!” plus tweets from AJ and others. And I don’t want to be stating the obvious here, but where. Where did we meet Adam? Because when I watched the season, he died after having 20 seconds of screentime.

Unfortunately, I have to admit it was realistic. It’s a space war, and humans have limited knowledge on space, so it’s only realistic for massive amounts of the population to die. So I’m not saying that killing off Adam wasn’t a good choice, because it could have been a wonderful part of the story line and plot if they had done it better. If the vld writers had let us get to know Adam better, his death would have meant more. Unfortunately, we were fed limited to no knowledge on a character that Shiro, a main character, used to love; and therefore, we didn’t get to mourn or love him with Shiro. We didn’t know what to feel other than disappointment because we wanted to get to know Adam, and cherish his character for more than the 20 seconds we got with him. We didn’t even get to feel upset that he died because we didn’t know him. Not to mentionnShiro references back to Adam a lot in flashbacks and even mourns him, which just makes me feel like there was more to Adam I didn’t get to see. I’m disappointed about that.

However, just because the writers might have not taken the best route for Adams story, I personally wouldn’t call it queerbaiting. Of course, words and tweets from several voice actors and creators did get us excited, which I do feel was not the best choice to make on their part considering how much the vld fandom has the tendency to blow news up and celebrate or hate immediately. They were just excited to finally give us some of the lgbt rep we were asking for, and as a fandom that likes to read inbeteeen the lines and over analyze a lot, we took their words for more than what they meant. Also, Adam dying doesn’t make Shiro any less gay, and I feel like people forget that. Shiro is still gay (or bi or pan idk if they’ve confirmed any of that) no matter the circumstances and can have a new love story in the future.

On another note, something that really hits a nerve is Klance. I personally ship klance, but of course I’d be just fine and happy with the show even if they didn’t end up together. What does bother me is that Keith and Lance have both grown individually and have grown closer together as the seasons passed, yet in season seven I felt like there were a few scenes that took me back to watching season one Lance and Keith bickering. There was so much build up in seasons 1-3 to AT LEAST a good friendship between them in the end, but I feel like we took two steps forwards and then 10 back. On the other hand, there were still scenes where you could see how Keith began to depend on Lance to be his right hand of Voltron and how Lance began to support Keith as their leader and as a friend more than ever. Which only makes me wonder even more: why was Keith stupidly making fun of Lance? It could just be a way to play off his feelings but considering the way he said those remarks, I doubt it. It sounded like he said then just to tick off lance. It just makes no sense to me personally how they could have so much character development in some scenes and in others none at all.

Allurance has also been on my mind. A lot of people say “Allurance is so forced and rushed,” but I would have to disagree. I personally dislike Allurance and would be kind of disappointed if they ended up together but I don’t think it’s fair to say it’s rushed since Lance has been hitting on Allura since season 1 and Allura has been nicer to lance since season 6. I do agree, however, that it is forced. On lances end, I wouldn’t say it’s forced because he’s had a canon crush on Allura for who knows how long, but on Allura side, it does seem rather forced. Before season 6, she would rarely bat an eye at Lance, and found him annoying and dismissed him whenever possible. So it doesn’t make much sense for her to all of a sudden have a crush on lance back. It would be kind of cliché and boring of Voltron to make Allurance endgame, but that’s just a personal opinion.

But out of all things the one that has annoyed me the most has been Axca being introduced as a love interest for Keith. I know they have always made sure not to kill each other when they were fighting on two different sides of a war, so it makes sense Axca would turn to the good side sooner or later because she realized Keith’s kindness. But it makes no sense to how she can be more than just a friend or comrade to Keith after two seconds of knowing him?? Zethrid saw Axca and Keith standing next to each other for half a second and all of a sudden it’s “true love”??? Compared to the amount of intimate scenes with Lance over a long time in space over several seasons, I don’t understand how Axca and Keith can appear to be in love just by standing next to each other for one moment. It’s horribly rushed. I’m trying not to get too worked up about it since nothing is confirmed yet, but in all honestly, Kaxca makes no sense and has no build up or purpose in the show whatsoever.

Overall, I do feel slightly queerbaitied with Klance, but not with Adashi. The show is definitely not homophobic, but they did let down a lot of their lgbt fans and more. I am disappointed that Adam didn’t get to be much of a character in the show, but Adam’s absence doesn’t take away any of Shiros lgbt rep. On the other hand, with Klance, I feel like the show writers showed us its potential and then snatched it away at last minute. There’s still season 8 left, so I could be wrong, but I rather not get my hopes up. I also really hope they don’t make Kaxca canon because it really doesn’t add up. Allurance on the other hand wouldn’t surprise me but would disappoint me. Again, season eight will tell us all what couples are actually endgame and what aren’t. Season eight holds a lot of power.
