oh how i miss the feeling of reading young adult books as a middle schooler- getting lost for hours, the wonder of a new world.. ah nostalgia :) what popular ya books did you like?
I know- It was so great wasn't it!! I love middle grade books the best - not so much YA. I'm not a big fan of romance/love interest plot lines - which tends to be in most YA
In middle school I mostly read ghost stories- I don't even remember the authors or titles- just if it was about ghosts I read it.
But as an adult I mostly read middle grade fiction & gothic novels Middle Grade books I love: The Mysterious Benedict Society - Trenton Lee Stewart Coraline - Neil Gaiman The Wiz Mob & The Grenadine Kid - Colin Melody Series of Unfortunate Events - Lemony Snicket Wildwood - Colin Meloy The Thief of Always - Clive Barker
And since you asked here are YA books I've loved: Not my usual type of book - but I actually went to school & was friends with the author. He was seriously the nicest guy & the book was so good- I couldn't put it down. - If I see you again tomorrow by Robbie Couch
The hunger games series - although I read that in college & Just reread it this year - it still stands up.
Holy Fuck!
This drama does not mess around.
Firefighter demonstrates how to put out a kitchen fire
Reblog to actually save a life
To explain. The latter works because you’re cutting off the supply of oxygen to the fire and suffocating it
as opposed to slapping oxygen inside the pan with the downward motion
Reblogging, because this is so important. When I was learning how to cook for myself in my tweens, I had at least a five years of fire safety seminars from school drilling this into my head, and I STILL had that instinctive put-the-fire-out-with-water reflex. Didn’t even think. I saw our oily burner catch fire after frying eggs, whipped around towards the sink for water, and my brain immediately screamed NO!!! NO WATER! I mean that fire safety stuff straight up bitchslapped me out of REFLEXIVELY setting my house on fire. I found a pot lid and inched it over the burner before turning off the heat. Even if you think you know this stuff, panic is powerful shit. Make knowledge more powerful.

**TW for discussion of ab*se
The intentional flipping of stereotypical gender roles in If You Wish Upon Me is so very interesting and kudos to the writers for doing so.
In Gyeo-re and Joon-kyung's relationship, the man is the victim and the woman is the abuser. Even though Gyeo-re seems like he would hold more power over her – with him being physically stronger as a man, and being older, it proved to have little relevance and just shows that no matter what apparent power imbalances exist between people, abuse can still foster. Joon-kyung may not physically harm Gyeo-re, but the su*cide threats and screaming, emotional abuse and manipulation (I'm not 100% certain on the semantics, but forcing someone to date you and giving them unwanted physical affection has got to count for sexual harassment too) – these are her tactics.
But on a different note, with the main couple, Gyeo-re is clearly very masculine yet Yeon-joo seems to "wear the pants" in the relationship. Gyeo-re is portrayed as being softer and more sensitive despite him being the ex-convict and Yeon-joo being the nurse. She's the one who confessed first, she can physically defend herself and is quite strong willed (not that a woman can’t do/be these things but her actions are very bold and dominant – the ones that male leads tend to traditionally take in dramas) and it’s HER that saves Gyeo-re from his abusive relationship, which I think is so important. Oftentimes, in media (and real life too), we see men save women from abusive relationships. And not to say that this is a bad thing to see — someone escaping abuse no matter the gender of whoever saved them is of course a good thing and better than being left with their abuser. But I find it really great that they were able to show that men can be victims and that men can be vulnerable and sometimes need help and that they are not incapable of being abused and it’s not always them that swoop in and save the day, that it can be women who are the saviors.
sorry idk but the way the world is so fast and the people in it still want it to be faster is sooo annoying to me. people groaning while standing in line for 3 minutes people being mad the train ride is gonna take 2 hours people complaining that the bus is a few minutes late people being angry that construction work is taking months even though it used to take decades. don't you see the world is already so so so fast in every single aspect can't you understand that being mad will do nothing and just make your mood worse. enjoy the moments of stillness you're given. just stand in line and look at the people around you. sit on the train and watch the scenery. you'll get there.
“To be honest I didn’t think I’d make it past twenty-one. I was living day-to-day. Thinking I knew everything, thinking I was an adult. And I was angry. About a lot, like a lot. I was fifteen when I had my daughter. And she was four when I went to prison for the first time. I came out for a little while. My girlfriend and I had another child, then I went in again. But this time my daughter was grown enough to understand where I was going. And that hurt. That’s one of the reasons I never went back. That, and the conversations I had with older men. A lot of them made one mistake and were never getting out. I ‘d messed up twice, and I was getting one more chance. I served 4.5 years. The mother of my children never left my side. She’s a great woman. We met in foster care; we have similar stories. And I came home to a stable home. For a little while I didn’t have to worry about bills. I could just focus on being a father: taking the kids to school every day, making dinner some nights, cooking breakfast on Sunday. I ended up getting a job at a homeless shelter; and that’s what I’ve been doing ever since. I fell in love with it. The people, mainly. Their stories align with mine. When my mother brought us to the shelter, it was the first time I ever felt poor. I was only eight or nine, but I said: ‘I’m always going to have money of my own.’ And that’s what led me to the streets. My daughters are on a different path. The oldest is a junior in high school now. Her grades are excellent, better than mine ever were. She’s got a little baby sister, so we’ve got three girls now. And I’m just a great dad, honestly. A really great dad. Just, I love my kids. And they love me. I can see it. And that’s what I’m proudest of. Because growing up I never had a father; he did 27 years in prison. I never even knew him. So for me to be a great father, that’s a thing.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate passed bipartisan legislation Tuesday to protect same-sex marriages, an extraordinary sign of shifting national politics on the issue and a measure of relief for the hundreds of thousands of same-sex couples who have married since the Supreme Court’s 2015 decision that legalized gay marriage nationwide.
“The bill, which would ensure that same-sex and interracial marriages are enshrined in federal law, was approved 61-36 on Tuesday, including support from 12 Republicans”
I want emphasize to y'all how surreal this is to any LGBTQ person over the age of 25 that 12 Republican Senators would support a Marriage Equality bill, let alone every Democrat. I remember when it was brave for any politician, including Democrats, to be in favor of LGBTQ rights. It wasn’t that long ago that it was such a radical position to take that it was reserved for politicians on the left-edge of the mainstream like Bernie Sanders.
It is kind of amazing that this can be written off as a small win to someone like me who came out just about 20 years ago when it was still illegal to be gay in 14 states (including my own state of Texas).
I’m only 32 and I’ve gone from seeing my existence as illegal to seeing people poo-pooing the codification of marriage equality as small potatoes. I just want to appreciate the moment.
A new scientific finding has uncovered why we get more viral colds, flu and Covid in winter and during cold snaps.
The sardonic, reductionist headline here could be "Scientists finally figured out why you get more colds in winter: bEcAuSe iT's CoLd!"—but the actual science involved here is both interesting, and potentially very relevant to everyday life and especially the immunocompromised:
It turns out the cold air itself damages the immune response occurring in the nose. [...] In fact, reducing the temperature inside the nose by as little as 9 degrees Fahrenheit (5 degrees Celsius) kills nearly 50% of the billions of virus and bacteria-fighting cells in the nostrils, according to the study published Tuesday in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. “Cold air is associated with increased viral infection because you’ve essentially lost half of your immunity just by that small drop in temperature,” said rhinologist Dr. Benjamin Bleier, director of otolaryngology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear and an associate professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston.
Want to avoid catching or spreading respiratory viruses like CoVid-19, RSV, influenza, or a common cold? Mask up, please, but also bundle up! Wrap up in a scarf, wear a balaclava, and just generally keep your face warm. There's no single magic solution, but that's not a reason to do nothing. Rather, it's a reason to take several simple precautions that help avoid the spread of disease and protect those around you. (I can't tell you how much "this isn't 100% effective so I shouldn't do it at all" frustrates me.)

Hard to believe it’s been nearly three years since having conversations with strangers became a public health risk. Humans of New York changed a lot during those years. The element of randomness was removed. The stories became more in-depth, and carefully structured. Often I’d work on a single story for weeks, and unspool it over the course of an entire day. The process was very rewarding in a ‘writerly’ sort of way, but these past few weeks I’ve been getting back to my roots: walking all over the city, stopping strangers. I’ve realized how much I missed it: the physicality of the work, the spontaneity, the city itself. But mainly the endless, small moments of connection. There’s something about sharing the same space with people: hearing the same sounds, breathing the same air. There’s a magic that can’t be transmitted through a computer screen. It’s bringing me a lot of joy, so I’m going to keep doing it. For the foreseeable future, Humans of New York is going back to what it used to be: random conversations on the streets of New York City. Hopefully you’ll enjoy meeting these people as much as I have.
