Hello, itâs been a minute. Letâs recap, shall we?
In January, I had surgery to fix a labral tear in my right hip. Going into it, I had read too many horror stories online about people whose pain got worse, not better after surgery. I was terrified to do it but also terrified to avoid it because I was seriously miserable.
If you happened to interact with me over the past year you may have picked up on the fact that I was most likely depressed because of my hip injury. Chronic pain is no joke and I have so much more empathy for people who have to deal with it for their entire lives.Â
What made it worse is that I tried all the things people say to try to avoid surgery: I went to physical therapy, acupuncture, ART, the chiro, deep tissue massage, pilates, yoga, bought an acupressure mat. I tried exercising more. I tried exercising less. Nothing helped and everything got worse.Â
The pain in my hip took up so much mental space that there were times when I could barely get through the day to day. I stopped reaching out to people, avoided doing anything except laying in bed and thinking about how much it hurt and thinking that I could not live this way.
I am happy to say that I have not regretted my surgery for a single moment. Iâm not back to how I felt before this all started happening but things are undoubtedly getting better instead of worse. Â
Six weeks ago I was cleared to resume regular exercise as long as I didnât go into it all at once. Shockingly, it was easy to resist. All my habits and schedules have fallen apart. So thatâs what Iâve been trying to do: get back into the habit of exercising. My schedule is erratic and Iâve only been to the pool to swim onceÂ
but
today I ran 5k without stopping to walk and while 2017 Mallory used to scoff at a mere 5k, 2019 Mallory thinks that itâs a pretty damn big deal.Â

I wonder when exactly it was that Star Trek stopped being perceived as light, fluffy, not-really-legitimate sci fi that ~housewives~ liked and started being seen as serious nerd business that girls had to keep their gross cooties off.Â
Also when did the Beatles start to be remembered as rock legends rather than a silly boy band teenaged girls liked?
When men decided they liked them.
this is seriously exactly how it happened. Women were actually the first rock and roll âcriticsâ because they would write in to womenâs papers and magazines to share and discuss what their kids were listening to when men still thought it was trashy teeny bopper music. once it became a lucrative, mainstream genre men shoved women out of the space. Men also tend to be gatekeepers once they move into formerly female spaces - early trek fandom was incredibly open and inclusive; women would set up fan get togethers in their own houses to discuss the show or invite the actors to visit before conventions became a thing, and then were huge in organizing the first conventions - but now the stereotype of a trekkie is a nerdy white dude who scoffs derisively at casual fans and newbies with his encyclopedic and pedantic knowledge of trek
I propose we call this âmentrificationâ
YES
MENTRIFICATION thatâs genius
by the way every single man iâve ever explained this to is completely boggled to hear about it. they genuinely donât fucking know. theyâre always like âokay name a field this happened inâ and youâre like âbeer. writing novels. gynecology. computers.â and theyâre completely fucking distraught. men didnât invent beer???? men didnât invent everything?Â
We can also witness the reverse happening, where women move into a space and suddenly it is deemed weak or unimportant. Some examples are teaching, nursing, and psychology.
âŚand any kind of clerical work.
Pornhub confirmed to BuzzFeed News that it is interested in acquiring Tumblr after news broke that Verizon is looking to sell the blogging platform.

Guys guys guys.
I was on a walk this morning and then got a call that my handyman was on his way and so I had to basically run back home so I would be there before he arrived.
So...I ran a little bit. Just a little. It wasnât super fast and yes, I had to walk up the hill to my house but...running! And it didnât hurt in any other way except holy crap I am out of shape.
Next doctorâs appointment is on Tuesday and Iâm crossing my fingers that Iâll be cleared to return to running!
There's a new option to #RunWithTheMarines on October 27 with the announcement that the Marine Corps Marathon Organization will be introducing a 50K as part of MCM Weekend. The inaugural MCM50K will take place on Sunday, October 27, the same day as the 44th MCM and the MCM10K.
How did I miss this news?
Iâve been silent for too long and can no longer bear to keep this inside: @busybeerunningfree is a good person and deserves many good things.
Aaw, so cute!
This is why they pay me the big bucks
Guys, my account was deleted all day and I even though I havenât posted a real update in ages (which I owe you), I was Very Upset About It so itâs good to be back!

thank you, opportunityÂ
I cannot tell you how many real tears I cried about Opportunity last month.Â
Letâs just say that for a week I was a wreck anytime I heard or saw anything about it. So Iâm just triggering my emotions all over again with this.Â
The mass race would take place on the same day as the elite competition.
My body better be back in running shape by 2024!Â
Me: Iâm not going to applaud men for basic courtesy
Chris Evans:Â
Me: What a gentleman. No one has ever been as polite as Chris Evans. His mother raised such a respectable man. This is what we should all aspire to be. He deserves the world. There is nothing better than what he is doing right now.Â
Tumblr is getting a facelift
Some time ago we took a long, hard look at how we stacked up to the recommendations outlined in the Web Accessibility Initiative of the World Wide Web Consortium. This is the initiative that sets standards for accessibility for people who may need assistance using the internet. It outlines steps to take and tools to use to create as seamless of an experience online as possible, whether you have auditory, visual, or neurological disabilities, are using a limited device, are on a slow connection with limited bandwidth, orâŚwell, a whole bunch of other reasons.
The result of that long, hard look? Not great. We needed to make sure Tumblr was accessible to anyone who wants to use it.
Over the past few weeks weâve been making changes to do just that. Our inaccessible menus are more accessible, we fixed our poorly described elements, and increased overall readability. You can read more about all that in our most recent @javascript post about the mobile web.
Part of making Tumblr more accessible involved upping the color contrast in our UI, most notably on the dashboard and everywhere else that familiar blue touches. The light grays and muted blues had a contrast ratio of 2.02:1. What does that mean? Bad. It was bad, and we needed to do better by people with visual impairments.
Enter your new dashboard:
It looksâŚcleaner, doesnât it? Like someone dusted off the poorly accessible bits. The blue is darker, the grays are lighter, all the buttons and icons are brighter with our new brand colors, and it has a contrast ratio of 7.87:1 What does that mean? Good! Very good.
The switch to your brand new, higher contrast, less dusty dashboard has been slowly rolling out this week. If you havenât seen it yet, youâll get it sometime in the next few days.
A note: We know that this color change on the dashboard negatively impacts the beautiful bluespace art so many of you have created over the past few years. Seeing these older posts lose the utilization of the dashboardâsomething that made them so special and unique to just Tumblrâis certainly not a great feeling. Thereâs no way around that. We hope, however, that this change only means newer, more bluespace art will be created, and that this time around it will be easier for everyone to experience.
Goodbye, #36465D. Youâve treated many of us well, but #001935 will treat every single one of us even better. Â
I have to say, tumblr makes the oddest updates.Â

Post Surgery Update
Hello! Reporting from five days after hip surgery from my new-normal place: the guest bedroom.Â
Itâs only been a few days but I am happy to say that at this point, I am doing pretty well. I am not in pain which is shocking. Like, I have not taken any painkillers since Saturday night and I was basically only doing that because everyone kept saying the pain would come. So far, it hasnât but I know better than to say it will be pain free all the time.
That is not to say that I am taking nothing. I have been prescribed meloxicam for inflammation and asprin to help prevent blood clots--both are pretty standard.
The downside at this point is just the lack of mobility. I am 30% weight bearing on my right leg for two weeks so I crutch around everywhere. The cats are very confused by the new, slower me. I also canât sit in a chair or bend my hip 90 degrees or less so I lay around a lot which has caused my back and glutes to ache. Do you know how sad it is when you canât even roll on your side while sleeping? VERY.
I go in for a post-op appointment tomorrow where Iâll find out a little bit more about what actually went down during surgery and any additional guidelines for recovery. Then I have my first PT session on Monday I really donât know what theyâll have me do, to be honest. But I am definitely looking forward to doing SOMETHING. Iâm going a little stir crazy right now.
I know I have a long road ahead of me but for the first time in months, Iâm optimistic about my chances for recovery.
Stairs are stupid. If you didn't know already, I had hip surgery last Friday. Luckily, I'm not in pain but it's a definite lifestyle adjustment! https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs_XxUngHQv/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=p15zghv5548e
